ROSALÍA and her gorgeous, somber flamenco pop music

I'll be the first to admit I know bugger all about flamenco music or the Spanish pop scene, so I couldn't weigh in one way or the other about whether ROSALÍA's success is a much-needed breath of fresh air or whether she just got lucky and found success where others have not, but I can say one thing for sure: her new album "El Mal Querer" has wriggled itself into my brain and won't let go.

On the surface, it feels somewhat unremarkable: very minimalist and moody production, and although her voice is wonderful, is it really that striking? I don't quite know what it is, but I find this album hypnotic and captivating. I don't know what she's singing about, and all I know is that it's a concept album about a "toxic relationship", but there's something haunting and ethereal about the whole thing. There's an almost drunken late night quality to it, where it feels as though I'm sitting out on a roof terrace on a hot summer evening, I'm alone and halfway into my second bottle of wine, and somewhere not too far off this music is being played. It's melancholic and enchanting.

MALAMENTE (Cap.1: Augurio)

PIENSO EN TU MIRÁ (Cap.3: Celos)

DI MI NOMBRE (Cap.8: Éxtasis)

I recommend giving the whole album a spin. It's only half an hour long, but if you're into it, you'll want to play it again once it's done.

Glad you're enjoying it, mang.

This is a current favourite of mine, as I really dig the weird car engine/police siren samples in the first half of it:

Some lovely sounds in there. Have you heard any of Camille's work? She's quite playful with sound and that track above made me think of her. You probably know her work already but just in case.

Ace. I finally have something to listen to after binging Tom Zé!

Fuck it. Got Camille on again for the first time in a while and want to share some more.

Money Note is very humorous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZZ7Xoiwa38

Sanges Sweet is beautiful and pretty much always makes me emotional: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxJJJOh255o

Baby Carni Bird is a beauty too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lVsQ1H1bis

The album Le fil has lots of "Janine" intervals which are pretty playful.

Anyway, without wanting to steer the direction of the thread to Camille, her albums are well worth exploring.
