Weren't some of those released later than 1970. I'll have think about mine but its definately ending with God.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Yes, but they were all written between 1968 and 1970.

As for God, would John include a song saying he doesn't believe in the Beatles on an actual Beatles album? That feels quite perverse, even for him.

biggytitbo

That's why I think it would be on there as it's exactly what 1970 john would do if he was somehow forced to remain in the band. I guess he might soften some of the lyrics though.

Wonderful Christmas Time is fantastic though.

Nothing wrong with it. And, whisper it, I like Mary Had A Little Lamb as well. I was talking about what Lennon must have made of it.

Bennett Brauer

Do we know for sure it was a joke though? You can't always tell with McCartney. I'm sure he said he wrote it as a children's song for Mary.

biggytitbo

Quick Google and it seems he has given two different answers over the years, mine and yours. Either way, there no doubt it's meant to be a joke, have you seen the video?

Yes, it was me that linked to it. It's silly and they know it, but that doesn't necessarily mean the song itself was meant as a joke.

Yes, but they were all written between 1968 and 1970.

As for God, would John include a song saying he doesn't believe in the Beatles on an actual Beatles album? That feels quite perverse, even for him.

The inherent perversity sounds exactly like something the early-to-mid '70s John Lennon would do. If anything, it seems quite tame compared to the bizarre assortment of political causes he successively lent his name to, up to 1975.

After all, he concludes that verse by stating "I just believe in me, Yoko and me" - which could more succinctly have simply been stated at the beginning, thus obviating the need to tell listeners what he doesn't believe in.

However it would also circumnavigate the need for what is clearly a classic solo Lennon song, written in the midst of all his primal scream pain and rattles.

Hence whilst the logic is basically the same as an inversion of Stewart Lee's deconstruction of All Things Bright And Beautiful - it fails to account for the inherent value of the final product.

Someone's made some very lengthy films about the Lennon McCartney relationship here which look like the might be interesting. 90 minutes each and 4 of them! - https://www.youtube.com/user/paigeconte/videos

Thanks for this. I'm only nearing the end of part 2 and it's got so much stuff I've never seen/heard before.

The 'private' chats with Macca et al about Yoko are eye-opening. Especially Linda making a vomiting noise when her name's mentioned. Crikey.

And poor old Ringo looking like he wants to kill himself in the background while everyone's arguing over each other.

Also Paul on what religion means to him : "Fuck all. Fuck alll".

The channel also has a Macca mixtape which is great. "I just like noise, you know". I bloody love that man, embarrassing uncle that he may sometimes be.

Gimme Some Truth

Monkberry Moon Delight
Wah-Wah
Love
Mother

Side two

Beware Of Darkness
Maybe I'm Amazed
What Is Life
Working Class Hero
Junk
My Sweet Lord
The Back Seat of My Car

Sorted.

Thanks for sharing that link, biggy, so much there that I've neither seen nor heard. Fascinating.

Sorted.

John only gets three songs on that version? Paul just gets four? Utter lunacy, you've made this fantasy look pointless and foolish.

Beware of Darkness
is a good song, but it's no way to start side two of a Beatles album. Closing side one with a pair of introspective/harrowing Lennon tunes is a bit much too.

All a bit of fun, obviously.

and of course the 70s Live album, which actually used performances from all of their solo careers, crossfaded and all that good stuff to give the effect it's all one concert. All the performances are taken from between 1971-1976 with the exception of the opening track, which is from 1979 (taking liberties I know):

The Beatles: Live! (1979)

Yeah, I think you're probably right about the back-to-back Lennons. I don't think 'Beware of Darkness' is a bad way to kick off a side, tho'. It might be my very fave GH.

I've never liked 'Another Day' one bit - Macca at his flimsiest. I'd take at least half a dozen off that debut in preference.

I'm interested in hearing more Ringo from that period - I LOVE 'It Don't Come Easy' but haven't heard anything else by him that's much cop. 'Photograph' doesn't really tickle my balls much.

biggytitbo

6 o'clock is Ringo's best 'written by another Beatle' song for me. Never liked Photograph or I'm the Greatest. Has a great sing along ending in the extended version.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Photograph is one of the best solo Beatle singles, it's beautiful.

I concur. Tremendous song.

biggytitbo

I've never liked it, feels like a nothing song to me, no memorable hook or melody to it. I'm not exactly a fan of Ringo's solo stuff though, either.

the science eel

It's kind of slow, country-ish. Production the size of Texas.

It sure does. I love the way it repeats and builds, I find it very moving. A great song beautifully arranged and produced.

Anyone fancy making some Spotify playlists for Nowhere Man's fantasy albums? I'd like to but simply cannot be arsed to do anything ever

Goodnight Vienna
Junior's Farm
Whatever Get's You Thru the Night
What You Got
Dark Horse
Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out

Side 2

I was particularly pleased with my discovery that Country Dreamer ends on the same note that begins #9 Dream - so a Beatley segue was possible!

Who would've produced these fantasy albums? Phil Spector? I can't see Paul going for that. I really like Spector's work on those solo John and George albums, but there's no way Paul would let him get his hands on, say, The Back Seat of My Car. He'd want George Martin at the controls.

Martin wouldn't want to co-produce with Spector, and vice versa, so maybe they'd end up producing themselves? That would've led to more arguments and schism, I'd imagine.

Solution? Get Jeff Lynne in.
