I'll fill in on the 5th as I'm out of commission from the 9th....and you'll note how timely I am.
I was going to volunteer to take the 5th as well if nobody else came in. If there are any other gaps in the schedule I don't mind doubling up.

As I can't do after 9th, perhaps you could fill in one of the other slots after that?

Gregory Torso

I can do another if there are empty days later.

hermitical

I'll also take a day if there's one left

BlodwynPig

fill the empty slots as is...so we know where we're at

hermitical

Got it, I'll take the 5th (in a non-constitutional sense)

if you're going to steal my slot (legitimately), at least play the game and come up with a Christmas name.

If Buzby's allowed a double then screw it, I'm having another.
Because Christmas is not about kindness and giving, it's about opportunism and taking.

On the promise of the track you posted I've been listening to some more Kola Beldy today, Blods.
Cracking stuff! Particularly White Island, which is very unusual and unlike anything else I've heard.
Cheers.

I know! I discovered him a while ago - all his albums seem to be called White Island (or at least have Ostrova in the title, which I know is Island).

It's a phenomenally diverse and interesting album - the track I posted is probably my favourite as it reminds me of the 80s festival scene in the UK with the lo-fi and unnatural sound (think Ullulators or Oroonies), but then it has that funky new wave bass as well. Each track stands on its own, though and there are gems throughout.

Interestingly, he was popular way way back in the 60s or 70s, singing a sort of East Russian schlager music - but judging by the scant information and the handful of videos, he seemed to be full of charisma and humour and in my mind this makes him an unsung legend.

Good to see him mentioned here.  Love that album.  It's like all the pleasurable parts of an intense fever minus the icky fluids and whatnot.

Only on CaB (and some specialist music forums) would more than one person know (and like) Kola Beldy! I think even Finders Keepers have avoided him for now?

Sin Agog

#53
Finders Keepers would have been all over him if he were a willowy 70s kids TV presenter-cum-folkie.

I think I was going through a phase of hunting down all the weird Soviet shit I could get my mitts on, and he was one of the only great ones I could find who actually got a government mandate.  Guess someone at the kremlin must have been a secret progger.

EDIT: Blodders you might like Sergey Kuryokhin for some more wintry Russian prog weirdness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN_1pP6u49A

Thanks, that's great.
Do you know Yana Dyagileva? My wife refuses to listen to her because the music is too depressing - she has a point, given also the artists' life and death story.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph2KMKr5YSw

Quote9 May 1991 is accepted as Yanka's official date of death. That evening she left her family's countryside home outside Novosibirsk and didn't return. Her body was found by a fisherman on 17 May in the Inya River. She was presumed to have drowned near Novorodnikovo Train Station and been carried 40 kilometers by the current. On 19 May she was buried in Novosibirsk's Zayeltsovskoye Cemetery

24 years old.

Sin Agog

Oh yeah, she's a total favourite.  Haha, it cracks me up how we all land on completely different spelling when it comes to these peoples.  I've always referred to her as Yanka Dyagileva.  No wonder they remain in obscurity so bloody long if none of us can agree on a simple thing like spelling.  Makes google searches a nightmare.

She and Egor Letov are so bloody raw and brilliant.  Also once alienated a lady friend by blasting one of her albums a bit too often (the one which sounds like she's jamming with a cement mixer).

A Norwegian dude once interviewed me for a book he was doing on illegal music from the Eastern Bloc after he heard me play some of this stuff on local radio. Dunno if he'll ever finish the thing.

Found it inneresting that Adam Curtis is a fan!  http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/adamcurtis/entries/20c22534-f722-3d7a-b7ba-0506fcc00063

Moonshine

Yanka is the diminutive form of Yana. So it's the same name but a sort of "cute" way of saying it. Most Eastern European names have a number of diminutive forms. Interestingly, Yanka is a Belarusian male name.

Not interesting.

Go to page 1, press  Command + F, type in your song name or artist and it should be highlighted if it's been used before.
