WHITE MICE - Cum Ye Ol' Faithful

Oh yeah, she's a total favourite.  Haha, it cracks me up how we all land on completely different spelling when it comes to these peoples.  I've always referred to her as Yanka Dyagileva.  No wonder they remain in obscurity so bloody long if none of us can agree on a simple thing like spelling.  Makes google searches a nightmare.

She and Egor Letov are so bloody raw and brilliant.  Also once alienated a lady friend by blasting one of her albums a bit too often (the one which sounds like she's jamming with a cement mixer).

A Norwegian dude once interviewed me for a book he was doing on illegal music from the Eastern Bloc after he heard me play some of this stuff on local radio. Dunno if he'll ever finish the thing.

Found it inneresting that Adam Curtis is a fan!  http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/adamcurtis/entries/20c22534-f722-3d7a-b7ba-0506fcc00063

Yana is the correct version - Yanka typically being a male first name or surname. It's possible she used Yanka as a punk epithet to denote strength.

A very literal translation of her name would be - Jane Deep In Life :)

Yanka is the diminutive form of Yana. So it's the same name but a sort of "cute" way of saying it. Most Eastern European names have a number of diminutive forms. Interestingly, Yanka is a Belarusian male name.

Not interesting.

ah, ok - I assumed it was also a Russian male name. I think the roots are Polish, according to my wife (who shares the same name). I'm just wanka.

WHITE MICE - Cum Ye Ol' Faithful

Thanks hedgehog, thought I'd put a bit of effort in this year. White Mice were (are? no idea if they're still an ongoing presence) one of those weirdo Load records bands (see also Arab On Radar, Lightning Bolt, Brainbombs etc), they always had very silly song titles.

I can potentially do another as long as it's before the 23rd - would rather someone else filled it before I did though.

That was very peaceful.

Should I stick mine up? Perhaps Petey Pate is Theresa May, and consequently had trouble getting a reliable WIFI connection through the day yesterday?

Petey Pate

Sorry guys, completely forgot.

I'll post my entry this evening.

Patsy Raye and the Beatniks - Beatnik's Wish

Sebastian Cobb

I went to listen to these today at work and found they were pretty much all individual links mostly hosted in dropbox. Due to the songs being foreign/obscure it'd be impossible to make a Spotify playlist so I could listen to them in one go.

So I found the first simple javascript mp3 player with playlist functionality and a basic working example and hacked in 15 lines of javascript to take a json file describing the content in this thread so far and a couple of divs to fix the image/player layout and threw the lot in amazon s3.

To make a hosted playlist of what's been on so far.
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/cab-advent/index.html

I took the liberty of rehosting the 3 files that weren't on dropbox (including the now deleted Better Midlands track). It looks horrible because I'm not a front-end developer. The js is pretty ropey as well.

Don't say I don't ever do anything.

greencalx

That's really great - good work.

Am I right in understanding that it sucks the tracks directly from the individual Dropbox links, so if we leave stuff there then your app will continue to find the relevant files?
