They're back at it:

Yes, I think that was the plan.

Interesting to read this article on the BBC website this morning -

The implication being that the protests are tailing off.  My understanding, from the gilet jaunes I know, is that they have decided to take a break for the Christmas period and plan to resume action in the New Year.  I'm surprised whoever reports on these things for the BBC isn't aware of that.

The vast majority are still driving around with the gilet in the window, so I'm thinking Macron is going to be somewhat disappointed if he thought Santa had taken this all away.

Blumf

Still going, protests verging on riots, they want Macron gone.

Meanwhile, on the BBC News site...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46933720
QuoteAn alpaca has confused and delighted residents of a small French town after wandering into an optician's shop.

The fuzzy creature spent half an hour quietly browsing lenses in the town of Hennebont in Brittany.

Hummm....

Seriously, that and a fire at some ski resort are the top articles for France that I can find.

biggytitbo

Amazing how the continued rioting and civil unrest in France has been almost entirely airbushed out of the western media. If it was Iran or venezuela we'd never hear the end of it -

It's not true they arent reporting it at all, but they're definitely massively downplaying it. Imagine if this was Moscow and Putin.

Alberon

Biggy might have a point about it being underplayed. Here's the BBC's page on it, which was buried in the small items on the Europe page of World News.

I work at media-opolis North of MainstreamNewsChester and I can confirm that there is a special room for "world politics writers", who are all based in the North of England where world politics happens.  The bit about the spider's web diagram is not correct though - there's actually a giant spider in the room who tells us what to do, for example banning the word 'French' and insisting we say 'Freedom' instead.

chveik

there were at least 500,000 people protesting for the environment friday and yesterday (without any violence), but obviously you've chosen to talk about this.

You'd be denying it was happening or discrediting the protestors.

The possibility of France crumbling into dust always seems to make biggy excited.  Look at him running about, will you!  Lovely to see him so happy after all the disappointment.

Pretty quiet here tbh.  Sorry.

An impromptu talk about the French mutinies during WWI. The interesting point comes right at the end, where the German response is mentioned.

As if any of us would be arsed anyway. There are 70 kippers on a million man march through Boro so if I was our government I would be plotting what awful shit they can get away with given that as a population we give as little resistance as possible.

Look how rattled TM was when a load of kids bunked off school for an hour or so.

What people really need to do is realise that marching on a weekend produces absolutely fuck all results anyway. It passed under the radar quickly but the most fascinating story of the year for me regarding protest was when the striking cabin staff got the US shutdown stopped within hours. That is real power.

So? They're two different issues.

Buelligan

What's the issue with the gilets jaunes then bigs?

biggytitbo

The issue (amongst others) I'm interested in is how a major crisis in a European country is been deliberately minimised in the mainstream media

Probably the lizards mate.

bgmnts

To be fair the BBC could have 24 hour coverage, a space probe with the story headline on it, a plane to fly over London towing the headline on it every hour and huge giant billboard visible to every town in the UK with the story on it and biggy would still say its minimised so who cares?

How do you know about this crisis?  Did you know about chveik's environmental protests?  Why don't they interest/worry you?

You know how all the news here has been about nothing but Brexit for years now? Well that is because we live in the UK. These are the first three french newspapers I looked up.

https://www.lemonde.fr/
https://www.liberation.fr/
http://www.lefigaro.fr/

Their Brexit coverage is way down in the list of priorities. Not out of some conspiracy just because they are not really that arsed. It's about the same prominence that the French Protest news is getting in UK papers and vice versa with Brexit.

er, not sure how to put this to you mate but he is posting something about the french protests...in a thread about the french protests. why not start a thread about those kids banging on about the environment yourself? It's not up to biggy to mention them.

protests happening in France = French protests. they weren't just kids, I was there too, with a lot of grown ups "banging on about the environment". I only mentionned it because biggy is creating a conspiracy out of thin air.  see hummingofevil's post above

I agree, avocados are a real threat to the environment.

They are, actually.  Huge demand in the West is causing deforestation in the third world.
