I was watching that Carpenters documentary on BBC4 last week, and partway through realised one of their tunes had been completely lifted for "Fox In The Snow". Another one  for the Murdoch swipe file, along with Out In The Country and Summer Wine.

Seems to be a thing among these fey Glaswegians - my wife was listening to French Navy by Camera Obscura the other day, and it's just Embarrassment by Madness, isn't it?

There's a wee similarity, but it's not a wholesale pinch.  Great song regardless.

Just looked at the current availability of the rooms and it doesn't look like many have sold. Doesn't bode well for something so expensive and a little over 6 months away. It's going to get cancelled, isn't it?

Which song?

Ta. Will have a listen tonight.

Nothing to do with B&S but my favourite "homage" is this. Reckon Sumner and co had heard it?

B&S Also ripped off "Everything's Gone Green" by New Order on one of their songs from offa "Tigermilk", remember ?

Sounds a tiny bit like Yesterday Once More in the verse to me.

There's only so many notes, chords and melodies in modern western music. I see your efforts, but that's just not any kind of creative theft - the two songs happen to share the same musical space.

To quote Aaron Sorkin / Jed Bartlet: "what's next?"

Think that was "Electronic Renaissance" off Tigermilk, rippng off "Procession". LCD Soundsystem later nicked the bits they forgot:

Read the thread properly.

My favourite (off-topic, non B&S related) Carpenters rip-off was Felt's theft of that ace guitar solo in Goodbye to Love.

Blinder Data

I am seeing ads for this everywhere online now. I'm flattered the algorithms think I could afford such things

I'm getting this too, the ads are literally everywhere! Most bizarrely they keep appearing on the clean up / maintenance apps I use on my android phone.

Am guessing they are struggling to sell tickets, unless this kind of advertising is very cheap?

SteveDave

Tickets are obviously selling well for this. I just got an email offering a hefty discount off the asking price because I entered the "Battle Of The Bands" doo-dad they announced a few months ago and...

QuoteWhile your act was not chosen to play on board, we were impressed with your submission and would be stoked to have you sail as a guest!

Heh. Why am I not surprised?

I see the sad news about Pete Shelley still hasn't filtered through:

If you scroll down on that link, Steve Diggle seems to be doing lots of shows playing Buzzcocks songs and "highlights from his solo career".

jobotic

It's cool that the tickets are twice as much if you're single, for all us terminal bedwetters who were permanently single when buying Belle and Sebastian records.

Dr Rock

Yes Steve Diggly-Wiggly is carrying on Buzzcocks. He said so on his FB page last month.

king_tubby

That is bad and he should feel bad.

Head Gardener

I entered a competition on Planet Rock radio the other day to go on a blues cruise trip, fingers x

they do give you free flights & £500 spending money too

Icehaven

''Blues Cruise'' is a much nicer sounding name than ''Boaty Weekender''.

SteveDave

It's still a whole load of white folk playing three chords on a boat whatever you call it.

Hmmm. I'm not sure. It'll be shit but it must be hard to give up your livelihood of 40 years. I'd have maybe expected a bit of a break before taking the Digglecocks out but shouldn't really judge.

king_tubby

Well, I have to apologise to Belle & Sebastian, as this doesn't appear to have been cancelled, unless there's a shed load of dufflecoated nerds weeping at Barcelona docks because a) #cancelled and b) there's no internet.

I'm posting on board from the Lazy Line Painter Jane Lounge so you lose.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

They definitely set sail today, there are pictures on social media and everything. So there you go, Belle & Sebastian actually do have loads of fans with money to burn. Fancy lady? Well fancy that.

Obligatory mention of the time I bumped into someone I know in a local park who told me she was on her way to join some friends for a Belle And Sebastian picnic. This was someone in her mid 40s at the time. It was at least 15 years ago and I'm still aghast.

No refunds.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

What did this picnic involve exactly? Food and drink, obviously, but I presume the band weren't actually playing live in the park. So they were just having a picnic while listening to Belle & Sebastian records? That sounds harmless enough to me... unless they were dancing around like Limmy in this sketch.
