This may have been posted before for all I know, but I just came across it and it reminded me of how great Dave Allen could be, especially talking about religion, and how distinctive he was for a comedian working in Britain at the time.

And I do like to see someone completely unfamiliar with his work obviously enjoying it so much, though he doesn't really comment much about it.

That's Dave Allen much later though isn't it, from his 90s ITV show?

I'd like to see him watch the 70s sketch show with all its religion themed slapstick, and Allen's bizarre obsession with Mexican firing squads.

Oh right. I'm going to have revisit his '70s stuff then, with him sitting in the chair with the cigarette and the glass of whiskey. God he seemed so cool back then, I wanted to be him.

I think his material was pretty similar at that time, and just as adventurous, with him getting the death threats and all.

He was quite brilliant. The main difference between his early and later material was that he was allowed to swear on his ITV 90's show. This upset quite a few old'uns at the time but arguably there is more to be offended by in some of his 70s/80s output: occasional gratuitous nudity and one ancient sketch where a woman about to get raped appears to be the punchline.  Anyway, different times etc

I think he is one of the most natural comedians/ performer who ever drew breath. His storytelling skill is that of an esteemed RSC actor; I could listen to him for hours.

IIRC, Allen had two stand-up series shown on television in the 90s, the first was on the BBC in 1990, and that was when that controversy about him using the f word was, and then the other was on ITV in 1993.

I think that the clip above may be from the latter of those, as I've a feeling that the background was blue on the BBC series and orange on the ITV one.

The guy reacting here rolled the highest charisma value possible, didn't he? I don't like react videos in general but once in a while you get somebody watching something so outside of their own culture and it's just lovely.

He was a fucking good looking bloke back in the day, Dave Allen, wasn't he ? Very handsome feller. If I started a " Phwoarr ! Comedians Version " thread , he'd be in there , along with Sara Pascoe, Stewart Lee's Missus, and that bird who reads the jokenews from behind the desk on " The Mash Report ".

Absolutely brilliant, thank you.

When I saw him do this famous story in the late '70s (? not sure, maybe someone else can date it), I thought it was one of the most beautifully crafted pieces of comedy I'd ever seen on television, and despite not generally being a big fan of it, probably the definitive example of punchline humour:

He could really tell a ghost story. This one chilled me to the bone when I was little. The playground chat of the next day.

I saw that guy reacting to a Frankie Boyle clip, expecting him to be so confused, but he loved it. Seems like a nice chap. Reaction videos can be interesting when it's someone who would never usually be exposed to certain things, like old people reacting to Kendrick Lamar https://youtu.be/2bkoeR6uwlE

Old 'groovy' people reacting Kendrick Lamar is not revelatory in the slightest.  I hate to use this expression, but genuinely, my parents in their mid-eighties are probably more fucking 'with it' than me.

That says more about you than them. Most of the people in that video did not know or appreciate Kendrick Lamar.

Sorry, I was a bit spiky last night, hampipe. Come back from pub.
