Corner shops - what are they all about?!

A colleauge has just asked if I potentially fancied going in on a corner shop with him - he has a fried who owns one but is getting old and is looking for someone to lease the shop out to.

My mate is wondering if there's any money in running a cornershop with two people, so basically splitting a 14 hour shift down the middle so we both work seven hours a day, plus runs to cash and carry

I've never thought about running a corner shop but if it pays the bills it sounds like more fun than my current shit job: doing stock,  reading books at till, chatting with cunts, occasionally getting robbed - no idea what the financial logistics of running a shop are tho - anyone on here got any idea? I don't want to get rich, just want to survive the month and not work for cuts

Is there a reason that only Asian guys and people from different cultures do it? Are us white folk jus too lazy to do it? Can you only make money on it if you've got a big family that pay peanuts on it?

General cornershop chat welcome also.

Is this something which is only viable under franchise models? That's like working for a boss that will sue you for quitting your job.

Hello i do this. It is more fun than a normal job but you will make a lot less money and hardly ever get a day off, let alone a holiday. I advise against.

I know a white guy that did it. He had a big merc and a motorbike and sold the shop in his 50's to make money offering 'consultancy' to other failing shops or something.

I don't know where that money goes in the other outfits. Probably in the pockets of some owner or landlord.

I think there's just a long tradition of people from immigrant backgrounds starting their own small businesses as the natives weren't too keen on employing them.

I've been told that it wasn't so much that it was difficult finding a job, it was more that when they started work their white workmates were fucking horrible to them.

Probably because it's hard work with long hours. Asian guys are good at that type of thing. Englisman too lazy for dat.

Well that too, yes.

I guess as well if you've got the kind of self-motivation and determination to improve your life required to make the huge step of moving to another country where there's more opportunity then you're probably also the kind of person who's more inclined to set up their own business than most. I'm talking about people who emigrate more for opportunity/economic reasons than to escape war etc. although obviously there's some overlap.

Strongly favours getting extended family members to cover all hours I'd guess.

Would love to hear more about corner shop life gib

No worries if you can't be arsed tho

The family of my best mate at school used to own one in THE 90s.

Up really early in the morning to collect the papers/send back yesterdays unsold papers.  Finish late at night after cashing up etc.  Never a day off.  Probably under todays minimum wage once you factor in hours worked - theft from stock.  Basically it's a  shite way to make a living, but apart from that it seemed fine.

^ especially if you sell booze and porno mags.  then you can get pissed as you wank.

For me yes, we rely on the state to make ends meet. I guess it depends where your shop is and how good you are at it.

I had a normal job once but found myself watching the clock every day. I can read CaB all day this way.

The most exciting incidents never happen when i'm in the shop. Those would be the sword man robbing us and the hatchet man robbing us.

I have a corner shop conoundrum;

There's a corner shop/mini-supermarket near me which is by far my preferred place to pop for booze and snacks etc. by virtue of the fact it's a 2 minute walk from my house, whereas the next shop (a Tesco Metro) is about 4 minutes walk and across a busy road, and I'm a lazy blighter. However, the opening hours it keeps are ridiculously short for the type of shop it is, it opens about 8 or 9am and closes at 7pm, and even less on a Sunday, while there's several other similar shops not too far away that are either 24/7 or open til past midnight every night. I've always just presumed that Tesco must have had a hand in it somehow as they're nearly directly opposite and open from 6am-11pm so I thought maybe they've managed to successfully object to them having similar hours, but could it also be precisely because there's similar shops close by (that sell booze) at all hours so there can't be too many in a given radius? Even if either or neither of these is the case surely 7pm is ridiculously early for a shop who's customer base generally work all day to close? I dunno, maybe it's just their hobby or something but it's bloody annoying.

How convenient that you weren't in eh? You devil you!

Sounds like it might be a lot of work for nothing! Maybe I'll look for a less garbage warehouse job

The corner shop over the road from me was run for years by a white woman but she sold it about 8 years ago so she could retire. She opened from 7:30am to 8pm in the week. Less on a Sunday.

She sold it to an asian guy (I think he still rents an adjacent house off her for his family) and he reduced the hours to 8am to 7:30pm. His reasoning being that it helped discourage the local yobs who'd hang about outside the shop. Seems to work. He probably also wants to spend time with his kids.

My nearest late night shop is 10 min, so I just make sure I've bought my booze before 7:30.
