The Culture Bunker

I liked the one when they asked an old boy about a Merseyside derby back in the 60s and he turned out to have been the Liverpool goalie that day.

Has there ever been a voxpop that proved an alibi was false?  For example somebody saying that during the time of a murder they were in Bristol with their mam, when a voxpop video shows that they were actually near the scene of the murder in Croyden, covered in blood, and claiming to have an opinion about bees.

Not quite, but this guy was cleared of murder when he accidentally appeared in the background of a Curb your Enthusiasm episode - https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80182115

I already knew about that though so it doesn't count.

Not quite the same thing but reminds me of the time a guy appeared in the sheriff court reports section of the local paper for crowbarring someone's car open then popped up a few pages later, pictured, in a vox pop about whether there were too many soap stars in the charts.

Has anyone tracked her down to ask what she actually said/thinks? That would seem to be a simple way to solve this.

She's left this dimension.

Because people are paranoid. So paranoid that they have to, without any evidence, come up with an elaborate explanation like morphing software, and ignore the fact that it's easier to just keep interviewing more people until you get the talking head you want. A friend of mine's father had this happen to him when he was asked to give a vox pop. The interviewer found his unexpected opinion amusing and wanted to use it, but the producer angrily told her to find someone else.

Just for the record, you don't need morphing software anymore. It's built into very accessible, industry standard editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro. The tool is called a 'morph cut' and it's very quick and easy to mask edits using it. They've been caught out here as there was that major change in the background, but who knows how often it's applied in today's programming? It's impossible to spot if applied well, and could easily be used for nefarious purposes.

Of course, historically editors have just cut away to b-roll to mask edits that remove gaps, fluffs, or to craft a soundbite where there wasn't one originally. I don't think using morph cuts is ethically much different, but there's there's something about the technique that does feel more deceitful, and personally I don't think news organisations should be using it.

Yes actually - in the 1990s Gordon Landsman was caught out claiming to be in Edinburgh (and even had the train ticket stub), until footage emerged of him speaking to the BBC 1 O'Clock news round the corner from where he'd murdered someone in Lewisham; eventually it turned out that he was filmed 5 minutes after committing the murder, and you can even see some specks of blood on his collar if you zoom in:

That link doesn't explain how he got the train ticket stub?

The best vox pop the BBC ever did was when Henry Winkler was asked for his views on the Heathrow airport expansion as if he was normal member of the public and was never in Happy Days.
Or out and about in Liverpool when this happened https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U_PUbQGA4U
