I'm not a huge fan (although I DO love the dodgy mic schtick), but in Collier's case it was more of "comedians who are know by just one joke".  In reality, the dodgy mic bit was a short couple of minutes opening his set, and I think he dropped it completely after a few years, only bringing it back when he got a new lease of life on TV in the 90s.  He was also known for the chicken walk, but that was even more short lived.  Otherwise if you watch or listen to some of his complete shows, they barely get a look-in.

I saw Barnie Cliftops dong a fairly credible set on the Whheltappers & Shunters. Before getting stuck doing the ostrich thing he was a pretty good prop comic.
