Right, I think I really need to expand my knowledge of reggae beyond Marley and Toots. Gonna put together a big playlist of popular and recommended songs, whack 'em on shuffle, and gorge on them into the new year

Any recommendations for really rather good tunes in the popular reggae genre of music?

I have two top favourites:

Barrington Levy - 'Murderer' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9mvTNh-plY
Anthony Red Rose - 'Tempo' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EatWwMArlw4

Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Arkology box set would be an excellent primer.

CaledonianGonzo

Made this for myself a few months back.  Nothing too obscure, but covers most of the big songs by most of the big hitters.

Listen to everything in the Studio One - The Heart of Jamaican Music thread. A huge amount of the best reggae comes from Studio One either directly or indirectly through reinvention of its rhythms.

PJ Harvey fans will recognise this apocalyptic declaimation from 1971 which caused much consternation in Jamaica at the time:

Funny watching poor Tony Blackburn having to pretend to like that - he hated reggae, like most of his colleagues at that time.

This would be one of my Desert Island Discs: Johnny Clarke - Every Knee Shall Bow with a toast by U-Roy on a King Tubby dub:
