Small Man Big Horse

Fine Western that over dramatises Patrick DeWitt's novel and makes it grimmer than it necessarily needed to be. John C. Reilly is great as one of the brothers but Joaquin Phoenix doesn't really impress, he's fine but nothing more than that, and a lot of the humour of the novel is missing. You'll probably like it more if you haven't read the book, but I have and I really loved it whereas I only quite liked this, so can only give it 6.4/10

Genuinely thought it was this for a moment

I liked this more and more as it went on - I think I was rather unengaged at the beginning but it definitely warmed on me, so much so that when it finished I started watching a few of the opening scenes again. Rather charming and melancholic. I didn't realise this was based on a book so maybe if I'd read it I'd have liked it less, as you say SMBH. The fact that it's partly a French production definitely informs it.
