The default message tone and ringtone on Samsung phones feature the same 5-note tune.

That whistling jingle thing? It comes from an old default ringtone called Over the Horizon. Here's a rendition of it which sounds like it came from late night Ceefax: https://youtu.be/dtiO9_W6hHE

This reminds me that as a child I had a lot of trouble understanding this:

until eventually I realised it meant a bus.

I used to think the words for Only Fools and Horses included:

"'Cause if you are the best
And you're a doughnut's quest
Well then brother, you're the man"

And:

"Say man, defeat Hooky Street."

Loads of things directed at a specific but unspecified man.

I am disappointed that you didn't 'fix' the link.

But, but, but, but, but... but the poncho link works!

Oh, I see... ya filthy degenerate.

Since bloody when has it been ukulele and not ukelele?

It can be either, but the first is more usual.

Apparently the name Maurice is pronounced Morris, and not Mor-rice?? Is this true? I'm still not entirely convinced

Isnt Anything

Yeah in English its generally pronounced 'MOR-ris'.

In French, or in the case of Richard Ayoades character in 'The IT Crowd', its pronounced 'Mor-REEce'.

so yeah a french person living over here would probably say it the second way but most say it the first way. I used to work with an english-sounding Maurice who despite having a surname from Belgium said it the first way.

He's not unspecified, the dodgy man Delboy buys all his bent gear from is named right there in the song: "Cos where it comes from is a Mr Reeve" !

Most hits by The Kinks are unacceptable.

Lola (transphobic)
Sunny Afternoon (boo hoo I'm a heavily taxed multi-millionaire)
Apeman (Apeman)

Lola is quite pro-trans isn't it? He seems quite happy with the situation. And the first line of Sunny Afternoon is fairly ironic isn't it? "Left me in my stately home" and all that. Seems to be more taking the piss out of songs like Taxman. Or am I falling for a "bit"?

Prompted by the Blues Brothers thread, apparently there was a pair of soul music megastars called Sam & Dave. Not only are these not the same people as Chas & Dave, but it's also kind of a ridiculous pair of names in that context. I didn't even think there were any American Daves. (except Chappelle, Grohl, Bautista and Franco I suppose. Fuck, nevermind.)

And Mustaine.

'Eddie Large' would be a great porn star name.

'Sid Little' would be a great dwarf porn star name.

Genuinely never heard of them before yesterday. As far as my very, very basic understanding of soul music goes, I have never had any mental association with it and the names 'Sam' or 'Dave'. I mean Dave, really??

I have heard of Aretha Franklin.

Another great Dave, although listed here as David, is Dave Porter who, with Isaac Hayes, wrote Hold On, I'm Comin', a hit for Sam & Dave!

They were just cashing in on the success of this auspicious duo.

They had a number 1 in the UK in 2004, you know.

Chalk me up, I've never heard of them before. If you asked me to name any Motown acts, I could only name...2? 3? maybe 4 tops.

No, no, no.  You have no concept of how such things work.  'Eddie Large' would be the dwarf's porn star name.

EXTRACT FROM 'THE WIZARD OF OZGASMS'

"Hello, Dorothy.  They call me 'Eddie Large'."

"Why do they call you that?  You don't look all that large to me."

[EDDIE LARGE PULLS DOWN HIS TROUSERS]

"Oh!"

[10 MINUTES AND A MONEY SHOT LATER...]

"Tell me, Mr. Large, is your middle name 'Not-Only-Knows-How-To-Use-It-But-Is-Also-Very' by any chance?"

"Munchkin name, not very common but yeah, you know it, baby."

"Have you met my dog, Toto?  He's as cute as anything and has a bone to play with."

"Not in this picture, he don't!  Union rules.  Now follow that yellow brick road over there.  You've a scene to film with a heartless bastard and his silver sprayed cock and balls."

A chubby older woman at work I like to fantasize about actually looks a lot like Geoffrey Howe from certain angles.

Sam and Dave weren't a Motown act. They were on Stax Records (and Atlantic records, too I think ). You've heard the song " Soul Man " , Shirley? That's a song by yer men.
Hopefully, after this information, "you'll be saying "I Thank You" to me (gives a cheeky little wink to people who've actually fucking heard of Sam and Dave ).

Bit harsh on Grohl there.

I've heard the song Soul Man, I didn't know who sang it though. Thanks, I am now enlightened and hope to spread this knowledge when the time is right.

As for them not being a Motown act - I KNOW! It was a clever ruse to crowbar my Motown one liner into the thread. Even Tim Vine would be proud of me for slipping that one in. Actually, it's probably one of his.

Oh, Bloody Hell. There's an obvious joke that * I * didn't realise, dozy eejit that I am. Yep, top Vine-standard gag, that one. Well done.
