Snake Plissken

Pop music is changing & evolving all the time. One overlooked classic is this song.

Does anyone else like Jimothy (he used to call himself Jimothy Lacoste)?

I'm a fan, his vibe reminds me of when I first heard The Streets.

Would this be the best place to see if there are any other Marc Rebillet heads out there?

Nah seriously guys is that real? I can just about imagine the possibility of how some genius could program that in Jitter  MAX/MSP but is that real? Its fucking mesmerising.

I genuinely think this is one of the greatest pop hooks of last 30 years.

Azelia Banks is fucking incredible.*

I saw Rina Sawayama at The Moth Club last night. It was like a stadium pop show...but in The Moth Club! You have to admire someone treating a gig at one of London's pokiest venues like they're headlining Coachella, which Rina convincingly did. She also persuaded some of her mum's mates to show up so there were two old Japanese women stood nearby that took the sting off me feeling too middle aged and moribund amidst all the sparkling wide eyed optimistic lotus eating carpe diem youth that tend to go in for this sort of thing.

GFOTY is a friend of mine. My housemate produced some of her most recent stuff, most notably Boy Next Door.

I Heart GFOTY, like every well adjusted human being should.

Well this is lovably batshit. The song is a solid 3* bop but the video is ace.

new Taylor Swift is like a bad Balkan Eurovisian entrant from 00-04 or some shit.

It sounds like an original song from the fifth sequel in a CGI Disney franchise that you've somehow never heard of.

Pop music is now beyond parody.

Mind you'll it's probably be a right banger.

I've watched this about two dozen times tonight. I'm canny fucked like:

I then hit the alterative on the youtube window:

Just the best. Back and forward. i've drank loads of brandy and listened to nothing but both these songs for the last 5 hours. I'm not joking. Pop god.

TBF of the first 9 tracks on the Sigrid album 7 of them are singles. I am a huge fan. She is ace.

hummingofevil

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfAqtFuGjWM If we going tp break out. Could have gone for the easy option. Early Charlie XCX awesomeness instead.

'Sucker Punch' is so good, but I was unimpressed with the album overall when it came out. I should probably listen to it.

So the best pop song I've heard all year is 'Heads or (Tails)' by Sadsun. Even though the title is fucking annoying. It has that gloriously euphoric melancholia that exists in most of my favourite songs and a shit-ton of reverb-caked FM synths. I really need to start work on my third album of pop songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2S9s8FJi2s

This is the start of her third album-era, so not early at all, but it's such a good track. I'd love a copy of the 12" but it's so fucking rare. Early is good though, True Romance is one of my all-time favourite albums. Stay Away is so so so good.

hummingofevil

Musically its ace but nothing mad but visually it's mindblowing. Compare it to this that we all thought was revolutionary.

I would argue the Girls Aloud track is a better tune but that Twice tune is just relenteless pop. I love it so much.

I'm a 32 year old curmudgeon, I decided I was 'too old for radio 1' when I got a job sat in a hut on a weighbridge at a tip during uni.

That whole Lizzo lp is exceptionally good pop, and I say that confident that it's never been meant for me.

It's tremendously good. Great to see some love for Twice on here.

Gonna throw a few lesser-known kpop recs out there because why not.

Sumin (not to be confused with Sunmi) has written for some fairly big hitters like BoA and Red Velvet, but her solo work is where she really gets a chance to let herself go. Rather than lead with a typical single, her latest video is a condensed run through her entire EP and it's really something.

GWSN are a bit of an odd one, with a hyper-cutesy vocal delivery but a really nice line in catchy chorus hooks and deep house breaks. So far their releases have felt like variations on the same song but when it works like it does on Pinky Star it really lands for me.

Not such an obscure one as you'll probably have heard the name if you've spent any time at all on twitter, but LOONA are incredible performers with one of the most diverse discographies in kpop. It took me a while to get onboard as Loona fandom is a bit of a deep dive (all 12 members released solo EPs in often wildly differing styles over the course of their first year, interspersed with three separate sub-unit EPs and that's before they ever released their first album proper), but it was worth it. I've compiled an abridged list of the more essential stuff here for the curious. It's in release order but I'd recommend newcomers start from 'Eclipse' on and revisit the rest later.

I didn't know I could ever love a thread so much. Everything else can crawl up my shit pipe and choke on my SARS.

jobotic

I feel out of my depth here, and to be honest a lot of it reminds me of being in an H&M on a Saturday afternoon. Exception is Hannah Diamond - great stuff. And obviously Call Me Maybe

Anyway does this count? From the, um, really annoying chewing gum advert.

Edit: she's on record admitting she doesn't have the greatest of voices so fair enough. Not a bad gig. Nice outfit.

How are people finding the new Charli XCX?

It's on me but despite already reading the tracklisting I was expecting all new songs so felt a bit stumped by the hits being so prevelant (kinda took me out of the flow of the record - like Mossad torture techniques - look it up). Which are all good to great. I'm more interested by the new tracks and there seems to be a few ballads on there which takes a bit to get my ear in (it's the furthest removed from music I "get" as possible) but on first listen White Mercedes and I Don't Want To Know are epic.

Will need a few more listens yet.

My hot take initial thought is that I want a Charli album produced by Lone.

hummingofevil

Yeah. It's good if you love Charli XCX but not sure if it's good ENOUGH.

Right... going on the new Taylor Swift. Fuck you guys who don't like her. I stan.... (urgh 40 year old man alert!)
