The game with one of most iconic characters in video games is worse than a game where the main antagonist is a leech and enemies are baboons and toads. Behave.

Resident Evil Zero is a potentially decent game, absolutely ruined by a couple of appalling, if interesting, innovations.  The zapping system between the two characters is a chore; only serving to turn the game into one long escort mission for the character who you're not currently controlling (in fact, I ended up telling them to stay put, whenever I'd prepare to enter an unexplored room, lest the A.I. get itself killed and cause a game over state).  The twin character system also doubles the amount of inventory management, which wasn't exactly the most fun aspect of classic Resident Evil to begin with.

The second innovation is the ability to drop items wherever you like, which would be an incredible addition to the classic Resident Evil formula, if only Capcom hadn't decided to do away with the items crates in the process.  This baffling decision results in the player having to run back and forth, transferring their item horde from one area to the other, bit by bit, whenever they move onto a new area.  Typically, the player will choose a designated room within any given area to use as a means to store their items, which results in a room full of items, haphazardly scattered about the place on the ground.

Both of these additions only serve to spoil the entire experience, which is a great shame because there's some interesting locations throughout and the backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous (using the same pre-rendered aesthetic as the remake of the first game).  I lament what could have been, had Capcom not been so keen to shake things up for nothing more than the sheer sake of change.

...toads.

Seriously, fuck the mutant toad in Resident Evil Zero.  It's attack is incredibly cheap.  If you don't know what you're doing, then it's an instant death and a lengthy replay to get back to where you were and that's the only scary thing about the giant toad; it's potentially an undoer of progress.  It's certainly not scary from a visual standpoint, given that it looks like fucking Frogger.

Cross the road, hop off the log and swallow the S.T.A.R.S. member for bonus points.

Code Veronica is more obscure than Nemesis, if nothing more than by virtue of the fact that the was initially released as a Dreamcast exclusive (it wasn't ported to the PS2 until a year after its initial release).  Nemesis is undoubtedly the better known of the two.

He's just a big knobbly man! You're the one who is misbehaving here. I agree completely with St_Eddie about zero, it's so close to being a fantastic game and were it not for the flaws that's he outlined above I think it would be regarded as one of the best in the series. Unfortunately it's a bit if a cock up but still better than resident evil: knobbly man.

DUNG.

Are you ever correct about anything Biggy, or must you forever be a contrarian, flying in the face of established objective evidence?

Zero has a great camp appeal though. That ridiculous villain. The leeches. The baboons. The zapping system. It's also strange that Rebecca isn't a lot more able in fighting off the hordes when she escapes to the mansion. And it feels a lot more desolate than the others in the series for some reason; less populated.

In all fairness, quite early on in my playthrough, I went through a breakup of a long term relationship and that just seemed to heighten the horror. I actually feel awful when I think of key points in that game. Bleak.

Going back a lot further, I think I completed Nemesis but remember very little. Two was the strongest and it's disappointing they dropped the ball with the scenarios, as that was what I really enjoyed (a lot more Rashomon than the lazy remake scenarios).

I thought that's what you clowns all loved about Resident Evil 1.

I quite like Zero, by the way, but Resident Evil: Knobbly Man is brilliant.

I concur, RE0 is brilliant until I have to drop items on the floor and switch fucking characters again. If I didnt have action replay on the GameCube I don't think I could have played through RE0 more than twice.

Good job this thread exists. I've been so enjoying Resident Evil HD Remake on my Switch, I had been considering giving Zero another go. I had completely forgotten the item dropping thing somehow.

No thanks.

Good news: Got past the pure HIV section of Remakesi 2 where you're playing as Ada, and now I'm Leon with an infinite ammo minigun and rocket launcher. GAME NOW FUN.

No, used to play Worms 2 with infinite everything and power/explosion radius turned way up. You could tear chunks across the whole map with the minigun.

Remakers 2 is fucking shit and this was the only way to make it fun. It is a colossally disappointing game for me. I want to see the end and play the extra modes, so I bought the £4 DLC that lets me do that. Capitalism at its very best as I blow zombies into paste.

Can we at least  all agree that Resi 3 should be called Resident Evil: Knobbly Man from this point forward?

I'm not enormously proud of it but I am glad that the option was there. It's either have next to no fun with a £60 game, or have some fun using cheating.

What's it to you anyway? It's just another form of gatekeeping isn't it.

I'm going to replay Resident Evil 3 at some point this year.  I tried replaying last year on the hard setting but it was ridiculously difficult and not the least bit fun.  I'll try it on easy this time around.

I'd say it was a good game that tries to be a bad game but fails.

I'll go one better and name another game where you play as a character named Carlos, whilst also featuring zombies; Season 2 of Telltale's The Walking Dead.
