Gameplay trailer

Fatalities trailer

Story mode prologue

Ronda Rousey as Sonia Blade confirmed

Geras (new character)

Can't wait for this. MKX was the point where MK FINALLY surpassed Street Fighter (although the way Capcom bungled SFV, not that hard) and a lot of stuff being talked about. Big rumour set to be confirmed is Ronda Rousey as the voice of Sonya Blade (Official: see above), also weapon-based fighting and a "Time-bending" story this time (If you played MK9 you know about the big reset). Only confirmed characters ahead of this are Scorpion, Raiden, Shao Kahn and a new character from the teaser.
Anyone else on board for this?

Characters seen so far:

  • Raiden
  • Scorpion
  • Baraka (last playable in MK9)
  • Sub Zero
  • Skarlet (returning from MK9)
  • Geras (new character)
  • Sonia Blade
  • Kronika (new character)
  • Kabal (potentially teased, last playable in MK9)
and a few I might have missed.

MKX(L) was fucking excellent. I far prefer it to SFV which I finally gave up on after Sagat.
Really looking forward to this. MK seems to work really well for me whereas, oddly, Injustice just doesn't.

It's Sonya, not Sonia.

Fucking arseholes.

Apparently the plot is the main villain goes back in time to reset everything, because she's evil I suppose?

If that's how it goes that's fucking gimp.

    Mister Six

Is there even a proper plot? Is the canonical storyline one in which no fatalities happen, or do all the characters somehow get brought back to life at the end of each game?

Yes, there is a plot to MK. Death is cheap as fuck.

In MK9 (A retreading of the events of the first 3, only Raiden is trying to manipulate events to pan out differently, based on visions sent back in time from his future self about to be killed by Shao Kahn in the battle of Armageddon), several characters get killed by Sindel and made into revenants by Quan Chi. Some of them are brought back to life by Raiden, who is able to combine his magic with Quan Chi's to restore them to humanity. This is why Scorpion is now human again in MKX. Scorpion then goes and kills Quan Chi before Raiden can restore everyone. This now means Smoke, Nightwolf, Sindel Stryker and others are stuck like that along with Liu Kang and Kitana, who now rule the netherrealm.

That last bit leads to one of the best moments in MKX's story mode: DARK RAIDEN.

It should be noted you can't do fatallities in story mode.

    Mister Six

I thought Liu Kang was a goodie?

OH GOD WHY DO I CARE ABOUT THIS.

I thought Liu Kang was a goodie?

    It's all Raiden's fault essentially. and Scorpion's.
With Shinnok beaten, the Netherrealm is without a ruler. In the post-credits scene of MKX's story mode, we see a corrupted Raiden talking about how he's been too mercyful protecting Earthrealm and he is going to actively go after anyone who might be a threat. He's talking to the new rulers of the Netherrealm and pulls Shinnok's still-living severed head out of a bag, and throws it on the ground as a warning. The camera then swivels around to show exactly who he's been talking to: Liu Kang and Kitana.

So yeah, if you want to mess with someone's head who hasn't paid attention to MK since the 90s, tell them that Scorpion's a living human again and Liu Kang rules hell now.
This is part of what MK11 is going to pick up on: New boss Kronika (which sadly we've been saying wrong already), thinks Raiden's fucking up the timeline too much and tipping the scales (her line to Shinnok's head in the prologue spells this out). Hence the time-bending story this time, and why we still see human versions of Liu Kang and Kung Lao in the trailers - they're previous versions of those characters.

Did anybody else find it a bit unsettling that the last Mortal Kombat was like a guro fetish thing? Some of the fatalities were still on point with their OTT gore mixed with humour (like the selfie one) but most of them were indistinguishable from fetish gore porn. I'm not passing judgment on that, it doesn't really distburb me at face value, but it feels like some artist's weird beheading fetish played out in a AAA game and I'm being forced to watch.

Not sure "fetish gore porn" or "guro" are widespread enough to make this comparison. I see it as a "video nasty" thing, personally. It's no longer shocking like it was in the pixel days but it is ludicrously OTT to the point of hilarity. Been the same way since the original MK, just more powerful hardware necessitating more egregious wince-inducing violence.

I honestly think the fatalities and x-attacks are feeling a bit samey now, just as they were around the time of 7 and 8, before 9 gave them a different, more realistic spin. There's almost nothing in that fatalities trailer that we haven't seen countless times before. Only Scorpion's chain slice seemed particularly creative.

I'm to torn on them. I think it's just the repeated "turning a head into a sliced loaf of head" that I find odd. But I suppose if you've got a good technique down you're going to reuse it.

Disappointingly, I hear the boss of MK11's name is pronounced "Crow-NEE-ka" as opposed to how everyone is actually pronouncing it.

7 was Armageddon, with the god-awful "Kreate A Fatality" mechanic

8 was vs DC (non-canon but Netherrealm Studios counts it as the eighth MK game). No "proper" Fatalities.
Yeah, I'm being a pedantic shit. I'm sorry.

    Kelvin

I lost track of the numbering. I just remembering thinking that they were running out of interesting, funny or gruesome ideas around the time of Deadly Alliance (which I generally really enjoyed), and it's very dissappointing sequel. What were they? Five and six? That would make sense if Annihilation was seven.

The big graphical leap gave the fatalities a boost again in 9, but it was short lived, imo.

Each to their own, I thought Deception was a superb sequel! Really loved the Konquest mode in that one.

QuoteThat would make sense if Annihilation was seven.

Armageddon. Not Annihilation. Annihilation was the movie. OBVIOUSLY.

    Spiteface

    After 4 it goes:

Deadly Alliance (5, notable for being the first to go straight to consoles)
    Deception (6)
Armageddon (7 - also the conclusion of the "old" timeline, hence EVERYONE being in it)
vs DC (non-canon as I said, but deemed Mortal Kombat 8 by Netherrealm)
Mortal Kombat (9 - canonical sequel to Armageddon but also a sort-of reboot of MK1-3)
Mortal Kombat X ( the "new timeline" equivalent to 4)

Madhair's right to like the Konquest mode in Deception - I really wish they'd being that back, or try a Shaolin Monks-style game again. That was when they got the spin-off right, unlike Mythologies and Special Forces. I'm also a little fed-up with "Cinematic" Story Modes in fighting games to an extent. I do genuinely love the directions MK has taken story-wise since 9, but when you have to play as fucking Nightwolf or Stryker just to get to the next bit, it can be annoying.

I also am glad to see that you can have an unmasked Sub-Zero in MK11. MKX was where they finally got that concept right. If I'm playing MKX and using either Sub Zero or Scorpion I'm pretty much picking the "Kuai Liang" and "Hanzo Hasashi" skins every time:

The other great moment in MKX's story mode.

Anyone slagging off MK3 wasters can answer to me.

    Not having it.

Having watched a bit of that video it does seem a bit artlessly nasty in its OTTness, though. It's not enough to chop off a Della's head you have to kick over the body, throw the nonce in the air and then throw a dagger through it as the eyeballs fly in slo-mo into the screen.

The last one I saw had stuff like Stryker (I think) fitting a contraption on people that put their head and limbs on sticks, turning them into some kind of ridiculous spindly scarecrow thing. Just OTT daft stuff like that. Bit more creative than the brutal mundanity of just hacking someone to bits and stomping on their severed head.

2 kharacters konfirmed yesterday: Kabal is in, as expected and a render of D'Vorah was revealed, making her return official for MK11:

Forgot to mention Kano is in, too. Remember when him and Sonya were left out of MK2 because they were the least popular of the first game's playable characters?

    Jade got confirmed last week.

Probably the best of the "revenant" designs since MKX.

Johnny Cage now confirmed, has the best fatality in the entire game:

There ya go, that's what a MK fatality should be.

Can't wait to see him do it to his daughter.

Amazing how well these games sell in the west given they're absolutely shit. Fair play to the lads at Midway for churning them out
