Fans of heavy music: What's the biggest fucking riff you've heard?

Sleep- Giza Butler 4:56

Matt Pike you fucking genius.

Kyuss- Spaceship Landing 4.01

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzBtWSouaZ8

A riff so massive, you could build giant passenger aircraft in its environs.

Black Sabbath- Into the Void

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx6IwshTL6M

The mater and pater of gigantic riffs.

Hawkwind's Levitation was always a favourite, maybe not the "heaviest" but certainly a satisfyingly cosmic heavy build-up to a megaton middle section.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvZZMxvJpAg&frags=pl%2Cwn

Nearly deafened myself as a 17 year old with my head between two large speakers listening to this.

Twed

That one that goes "da da da da da da da da, da da da da da da da da, this is my last resort".

The whole opening section of 'Plagues' by Converge is wonderful. I can't describe it better than an excellent YouTube comment: "this isn't even a song. it's a fucking tank, crushing everything": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeTSz02UXjs

On a (very) slightly lighter note, the main riff on Therapy?'s wonderfully daft 'Hate, Kill, Destroy' is a monster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEF61mW0XKU

Mastodon - circle of cysquatch (2:32)

https://youtu.be/nLsd1iCEIPU

Fear Factory - Shock (arguably cheating because all Fear Factory riffs work because of the sync with the bass drum, but it still makes me want to smash up the veg aisle in Sainsbury's when it comes on)

https://youtu.be/9D7VprJMBVg

Dillinger - Limerent Death (E standard!)

https://youtu.be/6p4tQUBtsBw

Deftones - Diamond Eyes

Forgot possibly my all time fave

Neurosis- Locust Star 4.05

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmdmnnv2NkY

The heaviest riff from the heaviest song of one of the heaviest, most intense bands ever.

The Wildhearts - Urge.

About a 1.05 when the "chorus" comes in...fuuucking hell.

I love that they listened to this and thought "Yep, obvious choice for a single." Heroin Decisions.

Oh, another Converge one, the outro to Jane Doe is one of the hugest sounding things ever. From 9:21 onwards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efioLa0JDcY

Too many Eyehategod tracks to suggest, but maybe Dixie Whiskey? I dunno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Yn9zZl8_Bw

Hardly Justin Broadrick's heaviest project, but the riff that comes in at two minutes into Jesu's Heart Sick is monstrous https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxcCgLMO4n4

Pauline Walnuts

(for the time) Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath off the album Black Sabbath.

It's the missing note that does it.

Please explain.

Pauline Walnuts

That anticipation for the next note that goes on slightly too long.  It's the rhymical not melodic gap that makes it.

Can't actually hink of the specific time where I've completely lost it in gig though there are few better things in life that being overcome by a riff. The opening bass line in Mogwai's Yes, I Am A Long Way From Hone does it but not sure that's the biggest riff.

What about this? Senex by Thrones. Listen till the end.

Or generally Newcastle's very own Bong are awesome live.

Cactus did a sort-of cover of Link Wray's Rumble in 1970 that precurses several much later movements in the annals of metal/rock. It's quite (literally) grungy, too.

If nothing else it does show how ahead of his time was Link Wray; the original is pretty heavy, too:

Happy 50th Birthday to the hugest riff of all: 21st Century Schizoid Man

Personal favourites:
Boulder - Rage With The Dead
Used to hammer this one into the ground with my old band at rehearsals and soundchecks. Goddamn, it's fun to play! Boulder were just riff machines. Listen to their first two LPs - it's like a breakbeat sample LP, but for smoking guitar bits.

Bad Brains - Soulcraft
While warming up in the studio, Dr Know farts out the kind of riff that funk-metal gorons through the ages would slaughter their entire families to be able to write. A moment of brilliance on an otherwise pretty awful album.

Rorschach - In The Year of Our Lord/Someone
The 'band that kind of formed the blueprint for what Converge would be' (Kurt Ballou). The second LP - Protestant - from 1991 basically invented a new language for heavy, alternative, extreme 'metal', hardcore or whatever you want to call it, but back in 1990 Keith Huckins was churning out killer riffs for their first LP, Remain Sedate. Blew my mind at the time, and changed the way I played guitar forever.

Darkthrone - Det Svarter Na 4.10 onwards
A total 'punch a copper in the face and push folk in front of a bus' riff. Not the most complex thing in the word, but that driving D-Beat behind it carries a lot of the weight. Kaos!

Asschapel - Carcass Bloody Carcass
A riff so massive it actually got me in trouble with the law (due to a drunken devil-horn/offensive gesture mix-up). Ended up in a Swedish car advert, which is a bit odd. More complicated that it sounds, too - I've watched the guitarist play it numerous times, and the spidery chord shapes he pulls do not make a lick of sense to me. I think I'd prefer not to know how to play it, tbh. Retains a sense of mystery, and thus remains one of my favourite riffs of all time.

Black Sabbath - Supernaut
A riff so huge it should be played by a Scottish pipe band in full regalia, which - should I have my way - is exactly what will happen at my funeral.

BlodwynPig

Supernaut is a favourite. Light and heavy at the same time.

I was very surprised clicking both of these links that you'd not chosen "Ostia" and "Ambugaton", as they were actually up the list of ones I wanted to post here myself but assumed you'd beaten me to it.

This is definitely up there for me as well. Listened to it earlier for the first time in years. Incredible.

Personally speaking, I absolutely fucking love uncomplicated, chugging low-slung riffs, and Celestial (The Tower) by ISIS has been ripping my head off my shoulders for many years now, especially the first big bastard that boots in at around 0:55. Massive.

Never been the biggest Mogwai fan in the world but I've got so much time for Ratts of the Capital and its monumental doom riff at 4:18. That song is a fuckin' journey and a half.

I think one of my all-time favourites, ever since I first heard it about 15 years ago, has gotta be the self-titled track off Marilyn Manson's "Antichrist Superstar". It's Trent Reznor's insane production on the thing that does half the work, easily. That insane fuzz. I get chills every time I listen to this, such a roaring tone of hellish, diabolical menace that pervades the whole album but really peaks quite spectacularly here.
