I actually miss the days when Campbell was just a crank who used to hang around games forums starting ridiculous arguments about physics, at least he was relatively harmless back then.

The idea of a madman like him(and he is utterly unhinged, make no mistake) having actual political influence is both hilarious and a bit terrifying.

Hmmm, I actually think you're being a bit kind to him, insofar as calling him a madman makes him sound more spirited than he really is. When you get past his Indy firebrand reputation, he mostly comes across as a centrist dweeb of the South Park Republican stripe. He did a lot to energise the Indy movement and he's rightly lauded for this, but he's too much of peevish, self-regarding twerp to be a real figurehead as far as I'm concerned. The defamation action is a good case in point; a more principled person would have  accepted that whilst it's not nice to be called homophobic, there's a greater public interest in allowing writers to call prejudice out when they honestly see it. But nah, it wont do to have homophobia blemishing Stuart "ask me about Hillsborough" Campbell's reputation, best escalate this dispute to the courts.
