Well, who they would vote for was never the question. I mentioned it as an example of a group of people that tends towards economic conservatism and socially liberal policies, as an example of why the claim above that it's the other way round is nonsense.

I think a lot of people in Hollywood shill and vote for Democrats like Biden, Pelosi etc because they're famous and powerful themselves. Probably go to the same parties and events they do. Plus they were always better than the GOP alternative. I mean cliches being generalisations if they shilled and voted along their idealogy and 'kind'  they should be going for Williamson more. But she's not going to make it to the next debate.

Now with Sanders, AOC having some appeal that should change.

Right-wingers called Hillary and Obama a socialist. They'll use the word as an attack as per usual. It's only poison to the Dems.

I know youtube comments and 'social media' give a very partial impression and a small sample, but it's amazing how many 'always voted Republican' and 'I'm a conservative but' people I'm seeing saying they would vote for Gabbard, including under Fox News/Tucker Carlson videos featuring her. "This is the first sane Democrat I've ever seen" etc. It's a very interesting phenomenon. I think the 'socialist' attack word would have a limited impact if she got mass exposure to Republican audiences.

Overt conservatives can often see through bullshit better than liberal hypocrites, who are just imbecilic if their presence on the web is anything to go by. She's fighting the Democrat machine more than Sanders had to, suing google, and disillusioned, cynical people of various kinds are going to like that kind of anti-establishment strength of mind.

It's somewhat moot because the con-Democrats/media will block her chances anyway, except that Sanders could pick her as his running mate  and that would likely draw conservatives to him.

A huge Tulsi billboard in the centre of Manchester, NH has the caption "A Soldier's Heart". It's probably stuff like that capturing the folk who would never vote for a Dem.

People supported Hillary Clinton because she was the only realistic opposition to Trump (unless you fancied the chances of Jill Stein or Gary Johnson.)

Wasn't there another fella? Colonel Sanders or something? Not heard much from him since, mind you, so obviously he had no staying power.

Didn't realise till now that Bernie done Joe Rogan the other week:

Just one general question on American politicing. When politicians reference the 'middle class'; are they referencing a British type middle-class, workers, small business owners with decent earnings; usually in the suburbs. Or is it just designed as a catch-all statement for people who aren't millionaires.

Haven't been hearing much about blue-collar workers for a while; which seems to be their version of the working class.

They mean white people.

I get the impression this is pretty much it with 'middle class', except with connotations of respectability and hard-work which exclude the undeserving poor. Obviously it's also a good way of avoiding too much like a dirty commie, but I think the good side is that it includes the 'white-collar' workers who are effectively proletarianised and victims of neoliberalism too.

Back in British miner's strike days it was quite a major news story in the US, though I'm not sure exactly how the media dealt with it. I believe it appealed to the Upton Sinclair/Woody Guthrie/Tom Paxton/Howard Zinn strand in the US which morphed into Bruce Springsteen's misty stadium rock romanticism (and of course he donated money to the miners). Bernie Sanders is somewhat in that tradition I think.

I think the biggest problem is that it does tend to be a very male-orientated view of the world and obscures women's disproportionate burden of domestic and caring labour, which is an eternal problem with the left.

The Culture Bunker

For an "Idiot's Point of Reference", would the Simpsons be classed as 'middle class' in an American context? I imagine so: white collar job, nice house, two cars, can afford to keep Grandpa in an old people's home.

I think they reference themselves as lower-middle class, Family Guy too.

CNN is the fucking worst. It's not the things they say so much as the relentlessness of their negativity and neglect towards the left. They know that they have the power to destroy a candidate's PR and they are injecting themselves into the political process.

CNN is mad that he's even running TBH. Messing up the nice thing they had going on

Late response I know, but if you actually look up those two stories they aren't contradictory, and Bernie (although I do love him) seems to be getting the detail a bit wrong:

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/09/politics/fact-check-bernie-sanders-health-care-spending/index.html
https://edition.cnn.com/2019/01/08/politics/health-care-spending/index.html

TLDR: US spends more than double OECD median not double any other country.

Isn't it pretty muc htrue if you ignore Switzerland? https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collection/health-spending-u-s-compare-countries/#item-relative-size-wealth-u-s-spends-disproportionate-amount-health

CNN's quibbling via HEADLINES shows where they're at. They are funded by the healthcare industry.

Biden's brain is visibly rotting. Daily gaffes at this point. Can barely string a sentence together, is being held back from cameras.

It's brilliant.

As the El Chapo guys said a debate by Trump and Biden would be great entertainment.

This seems like Trump coverage all over again. Far more focus on him randomly misstating something (which I do not find to be at all significant), rather than his policies and his horrible decades-long career in office.

Twed

I think the major difference is that they are avoiding exposing him to the public as much as possible, because he's embarrassing. They just want him to sail through based on it being his turn. They did the exact same thing with Hillary.

It will be interesting to see how they push Kamala, the backup establishment pick. I suspect there are going to be some positive media appearances arranged.

How long has it been since someone got elected or not elected on their policies?

Wake up. This is the world now.

Gabbard's got Harris's number. Even after Gabbard quits the race she'll attack Harris on Fox News even if she can't get on left-establishment media. Gabbard knows she's got a good shot at being in Sanders cabinet. That way people can't accuse Sanders of attacking a woman (again). Or (now) a POC.

Booker will become the establishment pick. He's a much more likeable person with the skills to counteract Trump.
