But Bernie is a white man!

We've got this guy running and people are still saying "let's give that Pete Buttigieg guy a shot, he might eventually come out with a policy".

Biden's announcement will soon shut them up because they'll have to find a way to justify supporting him.

I doubt it. They just don't want a white man to run, even if he's likely to win.

On a side note, have you donated to the Sanders campaign? Mind if I ask how much?

Twed

Odd question. I donate monthly to Ilhan Omar and Sanders, and throw them an extra few dollars when it feels like a helpful thing to do. I'm not very social but I occasionally do minimal grassroots things.

Oh I wouldn't be so sure about this...

I think there are lots of people who don't, I've seen tweets no more substantive than mentioning Sanders race and gender that get several thousand retweets. Obviously that's a tiny minority of the electorate and you can find thousands of idiots to endorse any wacky bullshit, so it doesn't really matter, but I do worry that Sanders will get dragged into the identity politics game by trying to appease these people, and Trump will slaughter him for it.

I don't think any of those people will ever go for Bernie, but I absolutely guarantee you that they will have Beto/Biden/Buttigieg fever before long. I think Bernie is savvy enough to understand this

They're going to have to pivot to aggressively pushing Biden. Buttigieg is yet another non-starter doomed by baggage.

This is all brilliant. The clock's a-ticking. I'm expecting somebody with the perfect identity to appear out of nowhere as a last-ditch attempt.

Mister Six

I dunno, Buttigieg's pull is strong. He's gay, he's multilingual, he's young, he's got a cute nickname and a good story. Biden's got too much baggage and it won't take long for the Strom Thurmond eulogy, praise for Paul Ryan's tax ideas and general gropiness to erode the goodwill he picked up as Obama's sidekick. Supporting Buttigieg will give liberals the kind of warm, fuzzy progressive feeling that they can't get from Biden.

Obviously he'll get slaughtered in the debates, but I don't think he really reckons he'll make president anyway

Twed

It worries me how much data candidates like Buttigieg are generating. Feels like this is all going to get fed into a model that generates the perfect candidate, for and pushed by Facebook, in 2024.

I might abandon all hope actually. So what if Sanders wins? Unless Facebook and Google and Amazon and big pharma magically disappear there's no future. They will use cleverness and their reach to make 2024 look how they want it to look.

Lot of names starting with 'B' in contention here.

Twed

Was completely unaware that the CNN town hall tonight was within shouting distance of my apartment.

Twed

Naturally CNN packed the audience with the children of wealthy people to ask a bunch of loaded questions.

And just when you thought that there couldn't be another "Student, Harvard" betraying their generation:

"My dad escaped Soviet Russia, Bernie Sanders. How do you reconcile that with your campaign?"

Harvard isn't where this town hall is, I'd like to point out.

If she'd get behind single payer as part of her campaign then she'd be the candidate with the best policies.

Polygots bringing out all the voters. Respect.

This is a slightly mean comparison because I don't think Buttigieg is dumb or totally hopeless, but I question whether he is this year's Marco Rubio, i.e. a candidate that the media class has convinced itself is perfect that no actual voters really like very much.

Meanwhile many Dems on Twitter have been furious because apparently Fox News was seconds way from declaring bankruptcy until Sanders agreed to do his town hall the other week.

Shocking to say, but the Fox News platform was less biased/deceitful than CNN.

Yep. The most anger and hate in politics is directed from the centre-right to the left, because they are the most threatened.

they've actually took the trouble to find a rich, thick as pig shit white russian cunt, lovely

Most people's academic careers would be over after saying such an uninformed, dumbshit thing as that, but I get the feeling she'll just juuuuuuuuust fine.

Twed

Jesus Christ she's a co-founder of the "Harvard Undergraduate Centrist Society". (She's also a board member of the "Gap Year Society" and puts "listening to Mr Brightside on a loop" in her bio, if you can actually bear to imagine such a person actually exists)

https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2019/3/14/centrist-society/

CNN doing it again. They are busing in people to do portray what they want to be portrayed. There should be repercussions for this, but I'm sure it's all legal. CNN host these because money lets them, not because they have a public service remit.

Also, imagine if someone asked that question about their poor family fleeing 1979 USSR (????) to another Jewish candidate whose relatives were killed in the Holocaust and who wasn't left-of-center (and thus, in the neoliberal American consciousness, no longer legitimately Jewish).

Paul Calf

Anyone who thinks that the American public will ever elect a President or VP called 'Buttigieg' is wrong, and I will take bets on it at any price you want.

in my mind "escaping Soviet Russia" means the white russians fleeing around 1917 (like Nabokov for instance). obviously it's just a wild guess.

Twed

Fucking disgusting, all of it. On Wednesday I'm at the college this was held at, doing a careers advice thing for students. It's a huge campus, Manchester has several huge colleges. And yet somehow CNN managed to put on a show consisting mostly of out-of-state Harvard centrists, as if they'd ever darken the door of St Anselm College if it wasn't to be a good little smear merchant for Daddy and Mommy.

Not all the voters, no. But there's a particular type of progressive middle-class liberal Democrat that thinks Ivy League educations and eloquence automatically make someone a great candidate, and they feel that even more strongly given the fucking abortion currently in the White House.
