There's a really icky liberal idea of being an impressive person that basically boils down to having the time and resources to learn multiple languages. As usual Jacobin is spot-on: https://jacobinmag.com/2019/04/pete-buttigieg-president-democratic-primary

You can see why those rich celebs cheated their children into colleges.

"My father's family left Soviet Russia in 1979 fleeing from some of the very same socialist policies that you seem eager to implement in this country."

sorry I didn't hear the date.

Hahaha....  "My god, free education and socialised healthcare -- got to risk my family's lives to get us out of this hellscape!"

I've not clicked on this article/video/whatever but my guess is it young Havard man who doesn't know the difference between Soviet communism and being an American Democratic Socialist.

I mean ffs 10 minutes Googling.

It doesn't matter what Boot-Edge-Edge's policies are; he will never be Prez because his surname looks ridiculous to many Americans. And sadly, I still think there will be a significant resistance to his being married to a man. I think America (and the UK) will probably be ready to properly accept this in about half a generation's time, but he's just too metro-liberal for a huge swathe of the US electorate, who view Washington as a hive of writhing, orgiastic bodies and are secretly incensed that they can't join in.

I agree that with the stuff about the cult of smartness, but to be honest I've rarely seen it tied to language ability. It's usually a vague TED-talk version of smartness, which isn't necessarily connected to any concrete skills or expertise, but more the persona of a smart person. It's the difference between Steve Jobs and Woz. Republicans also worship a similar version of smartness, but with a more anti-intellectual "common sense" slant. I'm sure Donald Rumsfeld thinks he's smart and wants to work with smart people, and that in no way contradicts the (possibly apocryphal?) story about him going round the pentagon on the eve of the Iraq war getting rid of anyone who knew Arabic.

Twed

Yeah, I didn't word it very well, being multi-lingual is just one example of the sort of thing they think equates to smartness. I think that to be right-of-centre you have to believe, deep down, that some people are just objectively better and that they're reserving a seat at the table for you.

Twed

Buttigieg used tonight to answer that he doesn't have policy positions yet because he's still finalising it all.

It's sad that he's still a viable candidate when everybody knows that means he's courting bidders to decide what his platform should be.

Obviously it's such an early stage that you can't predict or assume anything, but, it's still depressing how low Warren's numbers are. I hear she performed well last night, so let's hope there's some movement.

Conversely, fantastic to see that Bernie's popularity is entirely undented.

In an ideal world people would be giving her the respect she deserves. She has some great policies, and she's given strong lip-service to single payer, it's just frustrating that it's not part of her platform, and that the public will never vote for her due to prejudice and because they want a show.

Mister Six

I'd like a Sanders/Warren ticket. (Or Warren/Sanders.)

Twed

That's the sensible ticket and I'm all for it. There's also a "YES WE FUCKING CAN" ticket via Bernie/Turner though. Less prudent, but more revolutionary.

I think Sanders would pick a younger VP than Warren. I'm sure they ideally want a woman but in my opinion Ro Khanna would be the best choice. I've been quite impressed by him.

If Warren had run early in 2016 I think she would be President right now. She was afraid of the Clintons and now her moment seems to have passed (granted anything can change, we are so far out)

I'm actually starting to side with billionaires now because everyone who uses it as a demagogic buzz word is an awful cunt.

Whenever someone says "It's that simple", it usually isn't that simple.

Do you think they're aware of how they come across? Or just blissfully smug?

His entire campaign is relying on hoping that libs will think they're like those charming well-behaved gays from Modern Family

Looks like he just shat in a bush. That dog can smell it.

Twed

His entire campaign already seems like something you look back on ten years later and think "wow the world sure changed a lot since then".

Biden announced. Pledged not to take lobbyist money, and then IMMEDIATELY goes off to swim in a big bowl of lobbyist soup.

biggytitbo

Biden's big campaign theme appears to be he is a geriatric white man who really hates another geriatric white man. Inspiring stuff.

The Culture Bunker

That picture of O'Rourke is terrible. It's like something you might see on a tape of "Dwayne Gunn's 20 Country Classics" found in a roadside diner fifty miles out of Moose Pancreases, Kentucky. It just looks so cheap.

I suppose the dog/pick up truck door are supposed to symbolise "American MAN"?

It'll be Biden/Mayor Pete ticket. Because the Democrats have no imagination. Then Mayor Pete will fall in love with Beto while on the campaign trail. But only after their respective partners break-up with them dues to the campaign. That will be written by Amy Poehler.
