'Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes' on Netflix

Female killers are usually being interviewed by Piers Morgan, which is a massive blot on their copybook and makes it a real struggle to find them likeable.

Watched this Ted Bundy doc all in one sitting this evening. I thought it was pretty decent and had lots of footage I'd not seen before. I'm pleased I went in with quite a lot of prior knowledge of his murders and just how fucked up they were, because I didn't feel like that was really explored in any depth at all. The man was a proper maniac on a level above most serial killers. However the carnival going on outside the prison when he got executed was pretty nauseating, no matter how horrible his crimes were.

Chalk me up as another one who was aghast at that judge. He seemed gutted he couldn't take Ted out for a beer once he'd clocked off for the day.

Not in direct comparison.

Am I the only one who's empathy switch flicked during adulthood and I can't be morbidly fascinated with killers/rapists/kidnappers/whatever because of all the suffering they cause and I feel too horrible for the victims?

I feel we glorify these evil cunts a lot of the time.

I'm always intrigued by how they were eventually caught.
It's because of my love of 'Columbo'*, I guess.

*not the later ones, obviously

Some of the later Columbos are very good - like Columbo goes to college for instance, or the one with Rip Torn and the lottery win. The one where Ted Bundy guest stars is a bit shit though.

I noticed a few female users on Twitter moaning about the continuing fascination with killers of women. Do they have a case that documentaries like this play a role in the patriacharchal structures of society?

It bothers me that there are so many shows and docs about serial killers. Bundy was played by Zac Efron in a recent film. They won't even show footage of streakers during football games to discourage copycats but when it comes to maniac murders lets produce hundreds  of hours of it and glamourise it by using Hollywood stars.

I suppose as a species we're just obsessed with murderers. If they dig up and rape the corpse all the better.

Columbo goes to College is a belter!

It's always a bit weird that he's constantly described as handsome isn't it, when he's actually quite an odd looking man really.

I said similar before reading your post. There's something odd about going into work and the women in HR are idly chatting about the Bundy doc. I feel like I'm flirting with Mary Whitehouse territory with this opinion but I wonder if we're glamourising the most heinous and depraved people who ever existed and if future maniacs see that and it helps them along their journey.

People like to jump on porn as a catalyst but at least the majority of people in porn are probably enjoying themselves and getting paid. Bundy should be ignored forever and forgotten. But we're just fascinated by corpsefuckers.

If enough people say x is handsome doesn't that make it so?

My missus kept saying that he was totally butters but that Dahmer, however, phwoar, now there was a good looking man.

I then had to keep reminding her that Jeffrey wouldn't have been at all interested in her, and if anyone in the room was going to end up a decapitated head in his fridge it was going to be me. All me!

My proudest achievement.

I think Bundy remains fascinating because he actually is one of the few serial killers who was completely normal in real life, intelligent, charismatic, successful with women, could easily have been a lawyer or a politician. Most serial killers in their normal life are thickos, perverts, loners and weirdos, so he does stand out by the sheer contrast between his savagery as a killer and his normal personality.

BTK was a good lad wasn't he? All that church and that

But he was just a low-ranking council official with a nasty jobsworth attitude.  Bundy definitely looks like someone who had the potential to be a high-flyer in whatever field he chose.  Which is what happened, come to think of it.

What the documentary also didn't mention was how much of a shyster Bundy was. Basically everything he owned, right down to his clothes, was stolen. He was a very complicated character, and that's before you even get on to him digging up corpses and having sex with them until they became too putrified. You'd have thought with such a long run-time they could have got some of this in to make clear he wasn't just some Wall Street big-shot in waiting who made a few bad choices.

Slightly related: I'm not usually a fan of police interrogation analysis videos you get on YouTube as they largely talk completely bullshit, diagnosing everyone of being a psychopath and whatnot. However, the channel Jim Can't Swim seems a cut above. He's done a lot about the Chris Watts case, which I've become mildly obsessed with.

YouTube appear to be taking a lot of his videos down so he's moved over to Patreon. Only £1/month. In CaB terms that's a big bag of Kettle crisps. Well worth it, I say.

Shipman. And I think it's safe to classify someone who has sex with dead bodies as a 'pervert' AND a 'weirdo', so...not that normal.

Yeah Rader was a sociopath in his 'normal' life.

Although it is apparently true that Bundy was a massive petty thief so I guess that's not normal, but I guess that was part of the other Bundy anyway:

1: Nice Ted
2: Burglar
3: Sex with head

Just finished it.

The thing that got me about him wasn't the fact he was a gross, murderous cunt of a human shaped thing, it's the fact that he did it all with that fucking smirk on his face. He just seemed empty behind the eyes and nowhere as clever as he thought he was.

Bellend.

And the absolute state of the judge as well "I have no animosity towards you young man". Fuck off.

biggytitbo

Yeah the documentary really made me think he was a bit of a rotter.

TrenterPercenter

Good documentary, but fucking Mercans.

That judge, fucksake
