I searched to see if this forum already had a Spotify thread and it looks like every couple of years there's a thread where people share playlists which splutters out after 20 posts, so let's have another one of those.

Do you use Spotify as a social network? Do you "follow" people there? I've been using it for years but kept myself to myself, and now I'm wondering what following actually does. Should I follow you? Is that something?

I think this is a link to my profile, but who knows really. I called myself "Ooooh" when I joined, after 'Something Kinda Ooooh' by Girls Aloud obviously. Might change it, might not, it's up to me. Maybe link to your profiles, if that's a thing you want to do?

It's 2019 and I've just started making playlists, for the benefit of my 0 followers. Proper whittled-down sequenced playlists, like with the tracks in a good order and everything, as if I'd be a good judge of that. Who even for? Here are some I've made so far.

Under 10,000 plays. Motley mix of songs I like that have been played fewer than 10,000 times by everyone ever to have used Spotify. For perspective, "Do You Want to Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" by Gary Glitter has 1,041,264 plays.

Deep pop cuts. Songs you might not know by artists you probably do. Pretty much turned out as "Popjustice faves 2005-2011". That's okay.

And two separate horror playlists (because I struggled to narrow the scary songs I like into my arbitrary self-imposed limit of 32 songs, and because Pet Shop Boys and Anaal Nathrakh weren't really a comfortable fit on the same playlist):

- Mild horror. Lightly spooky songs for the slightly faint of heart. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Massive Attack, and lots of pop acts having relatively dark moments. There's a Sugababe in there somewhere.
- Moderate horror. A bit more abrasive and haunting than its companion playlist. Akira Yamaoka, Haus Arafna, Gazelle Twin, Franz Schubert, 'Spank My Booty' by Lords of Acid etc. At least one song was in Jam so look out for that Jam fans.

Okay what about you.

If you think that's horror, check out my top songs of 2018: https://open.spotify.com/user/spotify/playlist/37i9dQZF1EjypQaSZXdVhA?si=MtlLWA_5SRihlk87WVceOA

These are mostly good, Twed. 'Charly'. 'Cherry-Coloured Funk'. 'Here's Where the Story Ends'. The songs by whatever Bola is. The bit in 'Too Young to Die' where Mr Jamiroquai goes "der doo doo doo" a lot. The Stevie Wonder song that I thought was the Sex and the City theme tune. And 'Love Rollercoaster' has been one of my most-played songs since I imprinted on Final Destination 3 as a teen – the women screaming and burning to death are a bit lower in the mix in the studio version but I got used to it in the end. Couldn't see anything more recent than the early 2000s on your playlist so unfortunately you are spiritually dead now, but thank you for sharing.

I never made my own Top Songs 2018 public, out of cowardice. There's just too much to explain. Like, for example, the fact that my top song – I've assumed the first track on the list must be the overall top song – is just a track I played on a loop for one night, specifically to keep myself awake during a fit of sleep-deprived derangement. It was 'Badger Badger Badger' by Mr Weebl, and it worked. I haven't slept since.

Ooh could be a good thread. I'm shit at Spotify but still use Last FM. Keep playlists coming cause I'm shit at making my own, and I need to use Spotify more!

surreal

Nothing particularly shocking or eclectic in mine, I just add to it when I hear something I like, I have simple tastes... nearly 15hrs now though.

Mine just seems to be a collection of public playlists and some albums that I converted into playlists because at one point you had to do that to get it to work with them offline.

This one's all the songs mentioned in High Fidelity.

Good taste! Thanks for these.

Here's my best playlists:

nags plays pop: 7.5 hours of my favourite big pop hits, mostly from the '90s onwards. No ballads. No obscure stuff. Just bangers. I'm so pleased with this one that I even made a "Cheggers Plays Pop" logo parody for it.

Hail Boognish: I decided to make a playlist of all my favourite Ween songs. At four and a quarter hours, it's less finely tuned than you'd think, but there's not a single bad song in there.

disco obscuro: This one's a work in progress regarding the track order, but the aim is to collate a set of tunes that would be real floor-fillers despite the fact they aren't popular songs. It'll get progressively heavier and more abrasive across its duration once I tweak the track listing.

I still use last.fm too, and I love it. I hit 100,000 scrobbles recently which I was quietly very pleased about. Here's my profile.

Went for the disco list. Need a bit of dance in my life. It's all interesting! GOOD! SAYS ON THE TIN! Apart from my internet going off halfway (happy to ascribe this to the tunes)

Liking it, liking it. Ta! One of the better kinds of spunk I've let in my years as of late...

Edit: May as well do fucking live commentary. Up to "No Brain". Flows really well mate, I'm experimental but like a beat. Hits that need. Good sequencing. Do more!

Phil_A

Huh, I don't remember listening to half of these in 2018 to tell the truth, pretty good selection though!

Fucking hell, Higher by Carly Rae Jepson, what a banger.

Also digging these at the moment:

High Together - Siriusmo
Sickly Child - Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs
Walkman - Sebastian
Never Ending Circles - CHVRCHES

Best discovery was that Justice remix leading me to Time to Pretend by MGMT. Never heard it before. Fucking incredible song, loving it.

alt. pop hoofers

I made a new one this weekend of tunes with indie sensibilities but carrying all the ingredients of great pop music. Some of it is left field, some of it is totally just pop music but not chart music... you probably get the idea. Worth sticking on shuffle as there's a few artists of whom I've included more than one song back to back.

Glad to see this thread exists, as I was considering starting one of my own called 'Loneliness is killing me. Care to share Spotify playlists?'

This is the playlist I use when out walking. It's mid-tempo, deliberately uncurated electronic music for shuffle use. Not particularly challengjng, just something I enjoy when drifting aimlessly about town with a backpack and headphones. I usually add a few new songs a week

Made two more recently, both still in progress.

sprawling bastard landscapes - Long drawn-out repetitive sweaty songs. Swans, Earth, Oneida and the like. Suggestions welcome for this one!

punk sucks fuck off - Self explanatory. Two hours of my fave punk songs.

Oh Nags, oh Nags. Will you ever be my wife?

Still enjoying your alt pop list.

I keep meaning to add to it but never get round to it. Bit Kraftwerk heavy as well

Thoroughly enjoying this!

Cheers, thugler! Kills five hours, dunnit? 'Thin Line Between Love And Hate' by The Persuaders is my current favourite.

I've been enjoying the Rituals playlist very much over the last couple of days. Excellent stuff

Bobby Treetops

At work we have the luxury of having a separate room away from the rest of the open planned office, meaning we can play whatever music we want. I was there one day, minding my own business when some blowhard comes in and within a few minutes starts complaining about the music I was playing (e.g. this https://open.spotify.com/album/7EEdixXHWAieEoJI4WiZy9?si=BtAGdcc5QGmv4ztrGnTOmg) turning to my boss and saying, 'I can't believe you let him play this'. Subsequently I've created a playlist of abrasive music, to offend him every time he comes in our room.
