Spotify and Mad Covers

Do you ever search for a song on Spotify/deezer/google music or whatever, and you obviously get the version you want but then you find a huge list of all the people that have ever recorded it?

I'm doing that now with The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. I've found a Swedish man named Bjorn Afzelius, James Last, and a shoegaze outfit called Broken Dog all taking their turn on this hymn to the Confederacy. I find it very odd that gangs called stuff like 'The Flower Power Singers' covered it. I know it's not an outright Southern Pride song like something Lynyrd Skynyrd might do (I'm actually surprised they never did cover it), but apparently Levon Helm wanted 'Robert E. Lee to come out of it with all due respect' (he's only mentioned once in the song, "there goes Robert E. Lee", so dunno what he meant by that). Which is surely questionable. I'm sure there were lots of Confederate soldiers who didn't really go all in for slavery, but let's face it, that's what the war was about.

I suppose you can blame Joan Baez for opening it up to all and sundry. It's interesting to note who has covered it hearing her version, and who has covered it hearing The Band. So many of the covers copy her weird/shit intonation rather than The Band's.

There's one by a 'popular bandleader' named Enoch Light, which is a VERY loose interpretation. It makes me think that Spotify might have their data wrong. Although it seems Enoch Light and his brass band did a cover of Wichita Lineman too, so maybe not.

Solomon Burke does a helluva funky version. "Til Stoneman's cavalry came one day, and they tore up the tracks again and again yo". Quite infectious this.

Fuck it post.

Er.

What mad covers have you found in this way?

Awful in every way. But thumbs up.

The Fron made all the charts a few years back as celebrity choir but as everyone who lives around Wrexham (yeah we live constantly with cunts telling us we not Welsh enough - I'm born and bred 6 miles from the border) knows The Rhos is where the magic happens.
