Hawk Eyes are teasing a new album, which is good news for my love of riffsHere's one from their previous LP.

Are they the chaps that did the Mutation stuff with Ginger Wildheart? That was gloriously heavy and riffy.

Paul appeared on the first couple of albums (he sings the "Let's build a wall 'round the M25..." bit of Compass Point, and IIRC he can be seen on the video of Mark E Smith's visit to the studio during the recording of Error 500), and I think one or two of the other lads may have contributed some guitars, too.  Those albums sound incredibly coherent considering the sheer amount of personnel involved (Denzil's the person to appear on every Mutation song as far as I'm aware).

This article https://www.loudersound.com/news/metals-most-interesting-voices-are-all-female-and-its-about-time pointed me to the new Venom Prison - Uterine Industrialisation modern death metal - excellent. Get. Them. Riffs.
It also mentions Afraid of Water by Blood Command which is an anthem and much better than anything else I've heard by Blood Command - can't wait for their new one.

What else? fucking Let Them Grind - Big Business is what else. Sounds like Baroness but shorter and goes right to the point.

The author of that article co-hosts a weekly alternative music podcast called Riot Act which is worth a listen.

Thanks! I listen to that every week. I'm interested in where the rest of you get recommendations for this kind of thing. Spotify's spooky algorithms are very, very good at generating lists of new stuff - but what else is out there?

BeardFaceMan

Haven't used it for a while but last.fm is great for discovering new stuff. I usually just flip through Metal Hammer in Smiths for new releases now, signing up to mailing lists and following bands on facebook makes finding new stuff easier too.

I use mostly rateyourmusic these days

Well I'm enjoying the new Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard record right now.

Also I have finally got around to listening to Sleep's latest, which is no massive departure from anything they've done before but is decent enough. And there is a song on it called Giza Butler.

Youse all don't like Dream Theater, I bet...
I listened to the first few tracks and it's surprisingly okay from a band I think went right off the boil nearly twenty years ago. quite heavy riffing. more authentic-feeling then they've been for decades. but still a bit all yeah this is fine but WHAT'S THE POINT

the astonishing though. fucking astonishing more like. that no one would tell them how incompetently self-indulgent and boring it all was

king_tubby

There will be a new Earth record on May 24th.

Ooooh. Mates of mates. Saw them a lot when they were still called Chickenhawk.

I'm in this old video. Lots of Leeds music bods in it. I am the zombie that attacks Katie from Sky Larkin.

He's always been their vocalist. (EDIT - well, since 2002)

New band Piggery from NZ, caught my eye because one of the members used to be in Meth Drinker. Ugly stuff:

New Moloch (UK):

This split sounds interesting, have yet to give it a proper listen though:

BUMP
Not been a great year for this genre to be honest.
Venom Prison's Samsara is great, I enjoyed Eternal Forward Motion by Employed to Serve and Afraid of Water by Blood Command is one of the best songs I've heard in years : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fviEbGVf8Ss
But, really 2019, it's no 2018 is it?

OR IS IT? What did I miss (and don't say fucking Tool)?

magval

Mayhem's and Nile's latest are good if you like extreme stuff. Mayhem in particular haven't sounded this good in years.

idunnosomename

I've enjoyed this year. If you only want extreme metal then:

Possessed – Revelations of Oblivion is my album of the year def. A comeback album with one original member has no business sounding so fresh. Also best show of the year, amazing stuff, glad I could see it as they only did the one UK date in London.

Tomb Mold – Planetary Clairvoyance. Canadian death metal channeling Bolt Thrower but with more riffs. Only played one UK date, sadly wasnt in London would've liked to see them.

Cattle Decapitation – Death Atlas. This was a biiiit disappointing because it was very eagerly awaited but it's just, fine, what you'd expect. More melodic goblin vocals like the Anthropocene Extinction but none of the sheer violence of Monolith of Inhumanity. Still good though. And they were good live although the album wasn't out then.

Other new albums I've been listening to:
Nile – Vile Nilotic Rites, Children of Bodom – Hexed, Rings of Saturn – Gidim

For thrash a stellar trio of comebacks.
Acid Reign – The Age of Entitlement (UK)
Xentrix – Bury the Pain (UK)
Exhorder – Mourn the Southern Skies (New Orleans)
All after decades of the bands being dormant, genuinely great albums with character to pretty much every song. Saw them all live and the new material got a great reception, indeed they all could've done with playing more of it! Germany's Exumer doing well again with Hostile Defiance that came out at the beginning of the year, and similarly satisfying albums from Death Angel and Overkill.

And certainly not heavy at all but I'm going to mention Diamond Head's The Coffin Train because it's without a doubt the best thing this legendary band have done since Lightning to the Nations. I love it.

Fanks - much appreciated!

Them kick drums samples. I'll give this some more time. Some people are nuts about it. It reminded my that Blood Incantation did one about the same time which I liked.

Xentix? wow. The "For Whose Advantage" guys from the 80s? I will definitely check that out.

idunnosomename

Xentrix yes the thrash lads from Preston. Should've been bigger really. Hopefully will do more touring next year and get some new fans. No they dont play the ghostbusters cover

Here's a couple more 2019 releases I've found last few days I rather liked

Ayakasi Kagura — Kikoshi Meshi Tamae
Japanese one-man death metal act (although there have been other members at some point) but wow it has a genuinely unique feel, because as well as using traditional Japanese instruments, many of the riffs have the same tonal feel to them. Lyrics are in Japanese, and harsh vocals in another language are interesting (they're about folklore stuff, and the grudge, that sort of thing). Clean vocals towards the end. Altogether it sounds unlike anything I've heard before and worth a try.

Lord Gore - Scalpels for Blind Surgeons
If you want the Japanese connection, these guys had the infamous sicko Uziga Waita do their cover art for their two albums back in the noughties. They broke up, and now they're back! Those first two albums were Impetigo worship with long splatter movies samples and actually quite trad-metal riffs once you strip back all the harsh vocals. But this new one is a different slab of brutal death. Less edgelordy lyrics, more experimentation with riffs and song structures.
Still, I do love Rape Camp from The Autophagous Orgy for how fucking catchy it is.

if anyone needs me ill be in the mozart thread
