I've always found this FSOL tune a bit unsettling.

It's a pretty dark album in general. 'Everyone in the World is Doing Something Without Me' is the one that creeps me out.

Antonin Artaud - Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu

Naked City - Absinthe (Leng Tche could have been a strong contender too)

Gnaw Their Tongues - All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity

Keiji Haino is very good for this type of thing too:

although I must say the most distressing music for me is the one made by a few harsh noise bands (Hanatarash for instance):

and yet, there is still some peculiar beauty in it.

Here Comes Mongo

Kind of an obvious choice, but Geogaddi by Boards of Canada has this effect on me. I find the 'Beach at Redpoint' followed by 'Opening the Mouth' section of the album particularly unsettling.

Look, it's not weird to love Gentle Giant, Gryphon maybe, but not THE GREATEST UNSUNG BAND IN HISTORY.

Oh I love them too! I just meant it's weird that he literally lets that whole song play all the way to the end every time he gets a text message. They certainly are unsung, even the AV Club's 'Guide to the Best and Worst of Prog Rock' article listed them under 'Intermediate Work', calling them 'blurry and shambolic' and 'an unfocused mishmash'. Some people!

Back on topic, I watched the documentary The Jeffrey Dahmer Files yesterday and this song by The Knife rather creeped me out at the end, although it was probably helped by the grainy '90s news footage from outside of Dahmer's apartment.

Probably not even played that album to be fair. Missing Piece was the last LP I bought chronologically - ha, it's not even in my digital collection. Will rectify.

Thanks for the playlist! So much delicious darkness to consume. mu-hu-hu-hu-haahahahaaaaaaaaaagghhh....

I love FSOL Dead Cities album, ISDN also has an unsettling quality for me, maybe it's the "vastness" of it (the huge reverb on everything), like falling through the universe on LSD.

THE HAXAN CLOAK "Excavation" album is actually quite nice, in a deep, rumbly, sinister way.

Some of it also reminds me of Wolf Eyes' album Burned Mind, which is delightfully harsh in places.

You're not missing anything - I'd say the only great track from the last two albums is "Inside Out" from Civilian, but by that stage GG had settled into their decision to stop writing interesting music that was challenging to play (and listen to).

Who knows why as it didn't get them anywhere. But aye, it makes sense that The Missing Piece is as far as you got.

Yea my Dad raised me to never listen to or mention those final 2 albums.  Missing Piece is okay in spots though, 'As Old as You're Young' is kind of a sweet spot in terms of making their usual style a bit poppier.

In the spirit of the thread, my non-gag submission for consideration is "School Days" from Three Friends. The middle section of that song is really unsettling. I'm not well-enough equipped in musical vocab to describe why, but everything about it gives me the shivers - production, choice of instruments, pace, build.

Sorry I can't link as I'm at work but you'll find it on popular video website Youtube.

Yes Dead Cities is a dark masterpiece. I was digging on Fuzzy Logic in 1996, about as experimental as I got, when one of my mates at uni said fuck that listen to this and lent me Dead Cities. From the first somersaulting samples and breaks it blew my mind. Totally opened my mind to electronic music as a pure indie saddo. For me, probably one of the top 3 most important records I've ever listened to. Love to know how they put it together.

Of course, elevated by that Ozric Tentacles sample (FSOL got it in exchange for a keyboard).

FSOL had a similarly significant impact on me... Around 94 or 95 I was at a house party, of some middle class teenagers, who were being rebellious, listening to Green Day, Alanis Morrisette and Garbage... A random punk dude, who sort of gate crashed the party took over the CD player in one room, obviously alienating everyone in a short space of time, so that he had the room to himself for most of the night. I came in at one point and he was listening to FSOL's ISDN ... I was blown away by it, so trippy and epic and massive and weird etc etc...

Me: "What is this? Fuck this would sound amazing on acid!!"
Random Punk Guy:  "yeah! Too right mate.... [short pause] ... actually mate, do you want this CD? I stole it from someone but I don't really like it... It's not really my thing..."
Me: "Sure!"

I still have the CD (and tattered inlay) to this day. The CD is kinda fucked now though.

I always got the impression that the main music producer of FSOL was Brian Dougans, and Gary Cobain was more of the "front man" / performer / singer, but I don't really know if that's the case. I definitely suspect someone (or both) of FSOL has some form of synesthesia, it's something in the way sounds are grouped and presented in their soundscapes, it always feels so visual. At least on ISDN and Dead Cities, I wasn't too fussed on their later output, I have to confess.

McFlymo

In other news: I just had the surreal experience of walking through work, which is a harrowing restaurant / club / theatre Shit-For-Cunt(tm) space, (see my rant on tribute acts elsewhere on CaB) with my headphones on, listening to the wide spectrum of brutal tonal beauty that is The Stranger - Bleaklow ... It sounded, just fine, while I was listening alone (on the shitter) then as I walked through the room, with 40 odd customers in, it took on a much more sinister weight ... like the beginning of a protracted murder scene in an Argento film.

This wearing headphones in work thing is definitely a win!
As is the lovely collection of creepy music in this thread. I am so grateful, you sexy halions!

They made most stuff back-and-forth. One would make a track, the other would then work on it for a bit, pass it back to do more work, etc., then they'd do a mixdown together. There are a handful of solo tracks from the guys mixed in there over the years. The general idea is that Brian was more technical and influenced the noisier, heavier side of the group, and Gaz is more responsible for the more melodic and accessible elements, and although there's some truth to this, there's also a lot of crossover too. Neither of them have ever mentioned having synaesthesia, so I dunno about that. Interestingly, Gaz said he never made music under the influence of anything and that FSOL was never intended to be psychedelic - the term he used to describe their music was 'brutal reality'. That was before he became a hippy, though.

ISDN took me about 20 years to get into (it's really only risen high in my FSOL favourites list in the last couple of years), as it's a really harrowingly bleak record in places. The rhythmic tracks are raw and totally uninviting, and the ambient pieces are trippy in a really dark way. While Dead Cities is dark in a very obvious way - the frequently cited urban decay sound - ISDN is so alien sounding that it pushed me away for the longest time. It's not an album I would ever like to witness under the influence of any hallucinogens. Brian describes it as the closest they ever got to achieving what they were attempting to create.

The king of creepy albums has to be the last surviving recordings of an Italian castrato, Alessandro Moreschi. Sort of feels wrong to even listen to it.

I Am Sitting In A Room by Alvin Lucier becomes pretty creepy at the point when you can just hear it's a person speaking but they sound like they have been subsumed by a machine. It helps that he sounds like Hal.

Schubert's Der Leiermann, I find this song almost unlistenably terrifying as it is a direct depiction of madness through despair. It comes at the end of a long journey of mental and physical deterioration, but it's as well to experience it on its own.

Great performance by Quasthoff and Barenboim here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pze4NxCOjg0

and a classic one by Fischer Dieskau, which I think is unbeatably powerful

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIIS-UgixGE

24. Der Leiermann Drüben hinterm Dorfe
steht ein Leiermann
und mit starren Fingern
dreht er, was er kann.

Barfuß auf dem Eise
wankt er hin und her
und sein kleiner Teller
bleibt ihm immer leer.

Keiner mag ihn hören,
keiner sieht ihn an,
und die Hunde knurren
um den alten Mann.

Und er läßt es gehen
alles, wie es will,
dreht und seine Leier
steht ihm nimmer still.

Wunderlicher Alter,
soll ich mit dir geh'n?
Willst zu meinen Liedern
deine Leier dreh'n? Just beyond the village
stands a hurdy-gurdy man,
and with numb fingers
he plays as best he can.

There, behind the village,
stands a hurdy-gurdy-man,
And with numb fingers
he plays the best he can.

Barefoot on the ice,
he staggers back and forth,
And his little plate
remains ever empty.

No one wants to hear him,
no one looks at him,
And the hounds snarl
at the old man.

And he lets it all go by,
everything as it will,
He plays, and his hurdy-gurdy
is never still.

Strange old man,
shall I go with you?
Will you play your hurdy-gurdy
to my songs?
