Tangential Dreams

I downloaded a couple of albums of "new" "Tangerine Dream" music the other day.

By God it was amazing, sounding like classic-era Dream but polished up and vibrant.

Turns out it's a fake TD band called "Tangent Dreams"

https://tangentdreams.bandcamp.com/track/welcome-to-aedena

This got me onto youtube listening to all sorts of TD-a-likes, who either do cover versions or try to mimic them.

This particular cover of "Love On a Real Train" is mesmerising - really lifts me up (sadly there are some clicky clunks in the video that detract from that experience), but it does sound so luscious. I revisited the original, but that sounded muffled and constrained in comparison.

What do you reckon? Can modern technology just do away with the need to listen to (admittedly technologically advanced at the time) versions of favourite artists/tracks?

I don't think the production is great on that track. The frequency spectrum is cluttered, so none of the instruments have their own space and the overall sound is somewhat muddy. The percussion in particular sounds rather strangled. Needs a decent remastering.

the Azure one?

Probably something to do with having to listen to iTunes through laptop speakers for the last few years.

Yes, for quite a while these were actually naming their stuff Tangerine Dream and pocketing the royalties, even though many of the tracks were just old tracks with a couple of synth bits added. The band have had their stuff removed on copyright grounds and they keep popping back up with new accounts. Seems pretty shitty to me.

Plus, frankly, the recent TD releases are way better than this for me. All the original material from the Quantum Years releases has been solid, their best run of material since the Virgin Years.

There are so many TD-alikes in the 'EM' (Electronic Music, with capital letters, not to be confused with any electronica or any other electronic music that isn't made by fat middle aged blokes with more money than sense), but so few of them come even remotely close to capturing the band's brilliance. I came across a chap once who said he only listened to Berlin School music and literally nothing else. Life to the soundtrack of sequencers. Crikey.

I think this is the argument closed. Back to Epsilon in Malaysia Pale for me, then.

The one you linked to, Welcome to Aedena by Tangent Dreams. I don't know about an Azure one.

Sorry to hijack the thread but this is the only current TD thread. Watching this documentary on Pink Floyd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxQDWiyY-1A who do we see at 12:50?

There is a youtube video and a link to a band camp page which has welcome to Aedena on it.

FWIW, now that I've heard it my previous comments on the production of the Bandcamp track do not apply to this one.

Confirmed some years ago (by Record Collector, IIRC) that that performance of AHM (with brass and choir) was recorded - audio and film - in full.  One of the great missing pieces of Floyd visual history and, probably, the only complete pro-shot footage of AHM with brass and choir.  Bah.

shite. you should listen to my band, or redshift, or air sculpture, or node.... there's others, but that'll do for a start.

But you know I listen to your band and all of those listed. The thing with Redshift (Air Sculpture and Node are more interesting) is that they lapse into dullness quite often. RMI were always one of the more interesting British synthesiser bands imho.

Downloading this as I type

However, the reason I like the above is the "lushness" of the sound - the video always is quite hypnotic with its flashing LEDs ;) Reminds me of my pitch black trance experiments with a pair of Korgs back in the day.

Given that I am possible 1 of at most 5 fans of your band on this forum, I am disgusted that you would forget the fact.

indeed. duly chastened.

Yes, chalk me up for another 'RMI are the rare example of good modern EM' in an era of really bad TD-ripoffs.
