Our local group (Ipswich & Suffolk) has set up this petition to correspond with a die-in outside the local council - so, if you've ever enjoyed my posts over the years and want to do something that'll lighten the burden of my soul (and the burden of East Anglia's soil) or "make a point to the man"

...or just generally agree with the petition...

please do sign:

This is a solid article, but I think the challenge XR has is to deal with and somehow transform the apathy, cynicism and anger of much of the British public:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jun/26/climate-activism-extinction-rebellion-protest-guilty?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Top voted comments, perhaps predictably:

QuoteDisagree: wasnt reasonable, proportionate or necessary. It was criminal. Hopefully the rest will pick up convictions too.
Of course, you wont be effected by this but imagine the young 'uns will be registering some regret at their record.

Have you made a difference? Not one bit because we are already moving in the right direction and the majority can see the massive flaw in the movement: none of it addresses the key drivers of CO2.

QuoteYou say you have been an "activist" for 40 years. What did you do for a living? Was it a useful and worthwhile job?
Just for the record, I was a midwife--useful AND worthwhile--and I didn't deliberately inconvenience anyone (to my knowledge)

Quote"Second, to act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025."

This would be the greatest act of suicide in British history. We would be signing our own death warrant if we went down this path. It would make Brexit look like the greatest idea since sliced bread if we implemented this.

Watching our MPs in the HoC the other day, they really are half-wits. Utterly clueless. The figure of one trillion pounds was waved through without a thought or decent debate. They are not being honest with the public, because the public will have to pay for this green nonsense, and it is nonsense. This is not me denying climate change, but the strategy is so flawed as to be dangerous to the nation. Wind turbines and solar ain't cutting it.

Britain, that emits, what, 3% of global emissions? is panicking about a candle whilst the rest of the world is setting off bonfires all over the place. It is nothing but a cash cow for big business to milk, and an excuse for useless MPs to lecture us on our lives and do nothing. They will abdicate responsibility to the green lobby.

I want action, but not something as badly flawed as this.

etc. etc. etc.

Basically people are like "economically it'll cost to much", "ahhh but protesters are irritating and hypocritical", "things are fine and moving fast enough" or "but breaking the law is wrong". While most people say they believe in global warming, I think a tiny percentage have actually internalised how seriously bad the climate crisis and biodiversity loss are.

It's like everyone is either a neoconservative or a neoliberal now, the two having collapsed into one deadly "Economy, business and the market over all else, even to death" mantra.

Pretty telling, elites only regard climate change as an issue when it directly affects them.

As wheat yields are going to be impacted by higher temperatures in the growing season, she should have lamented that there won't be any more fields for children to run through.

QuoteSeeing retreating ice in mountains inspired PM to push for net zero emissions by 2050

Absolute astonishing idiocy.

We should be pushing for Manifesto 62

So, the last month was the hottest ever on record - in Europe, by quite some margin.

And we can keep hoping that it's "just weather" but the patterns are meeting the predictions of previous climate science (particular those conducted by ExxonMobil in the late 1970s - thanks guys!)

If you work for some kind of sustainability organisation, green energy or Ice 911 please continue doing what you're doing (and thank you!)... otherwise, please seriously consider joining XR or your local anti-fracking group and campaign for political change.

Cause we're not going to be able to just ride this one out wryly and nihilistically from the sidelines. (Unless you are Jeff Bozos, I guess... but even then, I can't say I envy being trapped in an underground for the rest of one's life, even if it is luxurious).

I don't and won't have kids and don't really think humans are all that cop so I don't even have that much skin in the game, but this is still on my mind constantly and what I spend most of my free time on. If I can kids, I don't know how I'd get through the day!

José

continued resource wars will winnow the world population down to manageable levels thus reducing the global carbon footprint and russian surface to air missiles will curb civilian air travel.

nothing to worry about.

garbed_attic

I don't know why, but this is the first article I've read that has made me believe that near-term human extinction may well now be unavoidable:
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/nov/27/climate-emergency-world-may-have-crossed-tipping-points

Obvs I'll keep doing XR, but I should probably also focus on survivalist stuff for the sake of my lazy brother and sister!

Funcrusher

I've gone down a bit of a rabbit hole on societal collapse recently and am coming to the view that we are totally fucked. This lecture in particular lays out the case pretty convincingly, not only climate change but also peak oil and other finite resources that are critical to current population levels that will inevitably run out. Watch at your peril.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WPB2u8EzL8&t=9s

This guy's website follows a similar theme of resource extinction and climate change. He's from Wales, so has an analysis of the specific nature of decline of the UK. Don't click if you don't want to be depressed. He has interesting things to say about North Sea Oil, and the overriding importance of energy.

I found this particularly cynical regarding climate change and resource wars about the arctic circle

Utterly fucked. No way people will care about it enough to stop shoving steak in their face. Much deserved extinction though.
