Some good points there and I largely agree.  However...

The fact that Prometheus was poor came as absolutely no surprise to me whatsoever.

I don't know what to say to this, other than bully for you, I guess?  I simply stated that Prometheus remains my most disappointing cinematic experience, which it does.  Was I a fool to have expected a better film?  Yes, possibly but hindsight is 20/20.

the ouch cube

Cop (1988) - James Woods at his absolute peak of snarling assholedom, and the ending is probably the only thing I've ever seen in a film that could legitimately be described as badass.

Sebastian Cobb

Now you've mentioned Woods, I guess the ending to Videodrome is pretty swell.

Said no one about Blade Runner 2049, because it's already faded into mediocre obscurity.

I'm with you Eddie. I mean, I didn't expect it to be absolutely dandy perfection as I don't personally think he's made a really good film since White Squall, but what I really didn't expect was the absolute turd that Prometheus was. Worse than Avatar and that's saying something.

I think the writing was on the wall once Damon Lindelof took over the script. Scott's direction was perfectly fine - the bit with the squid C-section was nail biting stuff - but the script was completely stupid.

AND IN NO WAY IS IT COMMENDABLY AMBITIOUS!!!

Said Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth about Aliens.

(Apologies for the delay)

Also, reference to earlier posts, I completely forgot about The Martian, which I think is a properly good film - excellent comedy chops on display there.  With Matchstick Men being so good as well, perhaps he should do a few comedies for a while...

Already mentioned but its similar with Mean Streets.

Now's the time.

Mean Streets' is even better once you know that none of them die at the end, according to the director. Which I believe makes it an even bleaker ending.

Try as you might, you cannot put your words - nor any other part of yourself - in my mouth.

Debbie Does Dallas.

The happy ending to end all happy endings.

Noodle Lizard

As has been mentioned, the ending to Withnail & I gives me chills every time, same with Taxi Driver.

I love the ending to Broken Flowers, although it seems to split opinions.

The ending of Salo, with the two boys casually dancing together to that wonderful Morricone score and asking about their girlfriends is absolutely perfect in context.  The ending of the similarly "shocking" Irréversible has a similar resonance.  The fact that these films have basically been reduced to "SICK AND DISTURBING" in the vein of A Serbian Film or what-have-you is tragic when you consider how perfect and inspired those moments are in comparison.

I also really like the ending to The Libertine, which isn't a very popular film:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtuIrOvvz74
Michael Nyman's score there, combined with Depp's perfectly-delivered monologue, from a character you really did grow to sympathise with despite his initial assertion to the audience that "you will not like [him]".  Very effective, I reckon.

I love the ending of The Vikings, with Einar's funeral.  That music, fucksake:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LClTjcyNJSI

As Duke mentioned, The Last Temptation Of Christ.  The final couple of minutes of that film are phenomenal, from the point where Christ crawls through the burning remains of Jerusalem and pleads with God to take him back.  Everything in that film is kind of odd and uncanny, and Dafoe's strangely stilted delivery there works, for some unknown reason.  "I want to be the Messiah!"  C'mon now:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LClTjcyNJSI

Also The Thing.  That's a great fucking ending.

Bogbrainedmurphy

Some great ones on here and some I now need to see, especially Sightseers which sounds superbly bleak from the brief synopsis I've just read.

I'll add one of my own; "Lost In Translation". Gets me every time.

Ooh, just remembered. Synecdoche New York has one of the most wonderfully heart-wrenching endings. Hard to explain at this time of night.

And also About Schmidt, which always tears me up:

Here's a happy one to go out on ("Goodbye Porpoise Spit!"):
