Lydon clearly worships his wife and he is losing her.

Exactly my thoughts.

Sorry, what are you referring to here?

That's awful. I wasn't aware of that.

I truly feel for John Lydon in regard to his wife, I didn't know about that... but that was pretty awful behaviour. It's one thing being a bit mouthy and quite another taking over the entire discussion and talking over people and insulting them and being a hateful prick.

It must have been straight after this that Lydon gave that emotional brief interview about Keith Flynt. Her's wearing the same clothes and you can see that weird Mark E Smith lookalike at the side of the stage at about 18m 20s when it looks like there might be some slaps.

I actually believe we are watching a man falling apart now.

I'm not sure. He was acting like this back in the days when he was on things like The Word, wasn't he?

He's always acted the giddy goat on TV shows for the past forty years. A wind-up merchant. His internal mental directive is to monkey around with the mainstream. However, he's been in a bad place recently and clearly drinking too much, so his iconoclast charisma is vile now. I fear for him.

Am I the only one that thinks he's still brilliant at this sort of shit then? Excellent entertainer, always stirring the shit. What more could you want from an old punk artist?

I only watched a few minutes of that but it didn't seem that much different to how he's always been, except that he's now old and fat. Which makes it kind of more depressing than a young person being like that I suppose.

It certainly doesn't seem as much of a change as when Mark E Smith was on the news giving some very clunky opinions about immigration. At that point I wondered if he'd turned into an arsehole or if I just hadn't been paying proper attention beforehand. Obviously always knew he was a nightmare to deal with, but I didn't think it meant he was an actual cunt - he just didn't play the usual standard showbiz game. Had thought the same about Lydon but as I'm not exactly a fan of his output it hasn't been on my mind as much.

He was clearly completely pissed. It took him about 10 attempts to be told that the Pistols had covered Stepping Stone.

He has always been opinionated and could be a bit narky and rude but that was on another level.

For about the last 10 years, whenever he does that swivel-eyed 'ooh, am I being scaaary and naaaughteee?' vaudevillian act for the cameras, I have the same feeling as I did when Robin Williams would mug relentlessly during interviews.

'Stop it. STOPPIT! You're an intelligent man with interesting things to say. Please, for the love of god, take it down several million notches ... '

It did make for uncomfortable viewing and I love a good Lydon rant. He's clearly a man on the edge due to the health of his wife. He doesn't look great himself and theres been alot of speculation on other "punk" forums in regards to his weight gain.
I've met Lydon. A friend of mine knows one of the Pistols roadies and he got me backstage at the 2002 Cystal Palace gig.  There were fridges full of free beer and I was well sauced but needed some booze for a party afterwards. I was helping myself stuffing cans in every pocket. I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Are you a fucking journalist?". I turned around and was confronted by Lydon snarling with a fixed stare. I said no and was a fan. He then dropped the stare and grabbed a beer from the fridge. We chatted for about 10 minutes. He wanted to know where I had travelled from. What I did,  what sort of music I liked. In fact it was a really relaxed conversation. He went off to do some press and I hung around awhile longer. I went for a piss in the porta bog they had set up,  as I was going in Johnny was coming out. He said "give it 10" laughed and walked off.
As I was leaving he shook my hand and said thanks for not being a cunt.
Its the real side I glimpsed that day having only seen the media version.
I love those type of affairs where he stirs shit up,  but clearly he's got other things going on thats making him unravel.

What's going on with his eyes - looks like he's popped a couple of tiny baubles in there :

No wonder he's so angry all the time - must be driving him crackers!

He seemed lucid and grounded enough on a Build interview for a new PIL doc I saw t'other day.  I wonder if he wheels out different personae whenever he's talking about the two separate projects?  Either way, though the interruptions must have been annoying, I admire anyone with their heart on their sleeve like that.  The internet has spawned a generation of people who are practically catatonic when you meet them in person, so naturally demonstrative characters will doubtless seem antediluvian and embarassing.

Also anyone who's seen the Ramones' various feuds on Howard Stern will know that Marky LOVES the drama.  The moment when Joey dropped the bombshell about his wig is still one of my favourite radio moments.

By the way, my vote for the inventor of punk is another American, David Peel.  The 1970 track Lower East Side is the model for about 70% of Clash songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rkm4ktg4OU

Lucid enough, yeah, but FUCK he's put on a ton of weight. The spark's gone from his eyes, too. I don't think he's well.

The thing about his parents being told to keep the young John angry so he'd recover from meningitis is really interesting.

Someone mentioned something about steroids, but he banged on about eating too much free butter in that PIL interview so it's just regular fat, isn't it?  Would love to see him and Jonesy do a belly bounce off each other.

Supposing it is just a regulation middle-aged spread thing, and that his ticker doesn't suddenly go cross-wise on him, I think he can put his natural tenacity and bloody-mindedness to the service of shedding this at some point.  I would guess that he's good at commanding concerted bursts of discipline when he really needs to.

I think I saw it at the time, but there's a great Juke Box Jury hosted by Neol Edmonds, with Fluff Freeman and Elaine Page on the panel with Rotten - but I can't remember if it seemed thrilling back then, or annoying. I was about 10 so I was probably confused, frightened and annoyed, in that order.

He stormed off. But something had gone wrong with the filming, so he had to sit down and go through the whole storming off again.

Incidentally, I had to read out load an excerpt from that Rolling Stone article at my speech therapy thing yesterday after telling the girls who are mentoring me - Yas and Joanne - during the first session that I used to be into punk) And a piece on Pete Townshend writing a novel. I'm still waiting for his autobiography. They're both foreign, one from Hong Kong while the other was born in Sweden to an Iranian family who moved to Canada when she was a child and they're also both less than half my age so I might as well have told them I was into The Charleston for all the relevance punk has to their lives.

Afterwards I was chatting to some of the other trainees, one of whom told me that her parents had been punks and new romantics in their day (they're the same age as me) and another rather thrillingly told me that she was distantlly related to Errol Dunkley, of OK Fred fame.

The main good thing to come out of this whole video is Rollins talking about his current favourite punk bands. Just gave BB and the Blips a listen and they're ace.

Also Duff McKagan saying he's into Death Grips. That was cool.

Juke Box Jury

Back in the 60's my teenage Aunt (who was Beatle mad & trekked all the way to Llandudno to see them in their Mop-top pomp) was incredibly excited when she was told that her dad was going to be on Juke Box Jury.

Imagining her old pop would be hobbing and quite possibly knobbing with all the stars : David Jacobs, Pete Murray, David McCallum . . . maybe The Beatles would make a surprise appearance & she could get all their autographs - SQUEEEEE!!!

Came the day - turns out he'd actually been called up for Jury Duty - whatever THAT was!

Needless to say, no Beatles sigs were forthcoming at the local court, but everyone had a good old laugh about it for the next 55 years!

Same thing happened with my dad. I was really excited until it emerged he was just going to be on the jury for Gary Glitter's child pornography trial.

He's got issues with his thyroids, which essentially means he has to knock all that lager he loves on the head.  My wife's got the same thing and has to follow a strict gluten-free diet.  That means no wheat or barley, so bye-bye Red Stripe.  People with it also suffer from depression, which I'm sure is the last thing he needs with the personal issues mentioned in the previous page.

Still, the act's tired and he needs to knock it on the head.  He should try and just be calmer and not so damn confrontational - no one would accuse him of being a softy or a sell-out, especially after watching the poor sod being genuinely teary-eyed in The Filth & The Fury.

Exactly. Millions of ITV viewers also watched him being funny and charming on I'm a Celebrity a few years ago, we all know he's a nice, sensitive bloke underneath all that tired posturing.
