Now, I can't be doing with traveling to Manchester or wherever to attempt to socialise with people I've never met before, but who fancies coming to Sheffield for a good fight?

We could teach the callow youth a thing or two about how it's done, none of your "shanks" and all that nonsense, just a bunch of balding, paunchy middle aged men having a good pagger (thanks for that), hitting each other in the face out of doors in our shirtsleeves.

We are well supplied with very iffy Wetherspoons, frequented by handy fellas called Tony who can stand about, smoking real cigarettes in the cup-handed manner, cheering us on. I reckon I could take a good few of you, although there seem to be a worrying number of Glaswegians on this forum, so maybe you could stay where you are, thanks. And Blodwyn Pig is probably a bit aggy as well but happily he's in Canada.

What do you say?

BlodwynPig

*Never knowingly killed a man*

Any time after June and I'd be happy to reacquaint myself with the Silver City.

So I'm thinking definitely before June for this. We don't want to hang about, because of the Tension.

phes

I'll turn up, drink 5 pints and say everything I have to say in 90 minutes flat, then go quiet. So that's 14.00-15.30 covered.

The correct place for a Sheffield meet is the Rutland Arms

You're heading for a severe pummelling.

I can make a Sheffield meet most likely.

Rutland is lovely but its bloody hard to get a seat in there these days with it being so tiny. Sheffield Tap seems obvious given its at the station itself. I guess we can head there if (when) Rutland is full.

phes

Rutland isn't that small, if you catch it before mid afternoon there's a fair chance of snaring a corner. It's homelier than the tap, which I've avoided recently as unless you drink the one or two of their own pales you end up paying a fiver for a pint of tiny rebel or somesuch. It's also prone to filling up with twats if you're unlucky with timing. I'd go to either though.

phes

Another option is the beer engine but that's a bit of a walk from the station

king_tubby

The Devonshire Cat is fucking massive and full of good beer.

phes

Isn't it grim and dark and full of little wooden seats made for children? I've only been there on my way home late at night tbh so god knows if my memory is right, but always left thinking eurrrgh

I'm not sure space is going to be a major consideration for a Sheffield meet

Just go to Kelham Island surely? Start at The Shakespeare and bag a table. Bit out of the way but only a 15 minute walk from the station.

There's one in the city centre and that one's a bit shit, and there's one in Kelham island (the Fat Cat?) and that is miles better as a boozer. Names might be the other way round.

Loads of cracking pubs in sheff, you can't really miss. My shout for Fagan's, was always quiet in the day when I lived there and a bloody lovely little spot.

Edit: though to clarify, I won't be able to make this unless it takes place in 2007 when I still lived there.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

I'd love to meet up with some of you and stomp on your fucking heads repeatedly until they go pop, but unfortunately I can't be bothered. Could someone capture the action in shaky mobile phone camera footage, preferably in portrait mode?

T S Eliot considers rewrite.

This is the trouble with arranging a Sheffield meet, the sheer number of appealling options. We should stay close to either the station or Div St/West St though to help people out.

king_tubby

Oh, I'm sad to read that the Devonshire Cat has gone shit.

Other than the beer options (which were at the start quite a selling point but are now fairly easy to find elsewhere) I never thought it had that much going for it and was pretty disappointed when I first visited  Atmosphere free, no interesting features décor-wise, weird mix of beer monsters and Blades fans, and expensive. Definitely not awful - I'd be delighted to find it in some towns, but it was below at least 10 other Sheffield city centre pubs in my estimation.

Norton Canes

Would like to go because never been to Sheffield before but got the Manc meet on April 27th so will probably need a bit of time to get breath back, exhausting things these CaB meets.

king_tubby

It's probably been nearly fifteen years since I was a (semi)-regular there. My Sheffield pub knowledge is very out of date, on the rare occasions I'm over there nowadays it's staying with friends who have moved in to the suburbs. So my advice is go to the Greystones.

Completely agree with this on all counts.

Is the Red Deer still any good? That was my go-to on West Street to play with the cats and sit in front of the fire.

Edit: it is, and they have Oakham Citra on tap. That would be my shout, hands down. Very jealous of everyone who gets to go to this.

phes

The Red Deer is still just fine. Much more homely than the Dev Cat, the kind of place i'll happily lounge about at on my own. Beer is adequate and prices average.

There's also the Bath Inn nearby. Lovely pub and good selection of beer but it is a thornbridge

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Yeah The Red Deer is one of mine/our faves. Probably among the nicest crowd to be found in any city centre pub.

If we're discussing central venues (not Kelham Island or other outlying areas), then I'd go for:

1) Fagans (partly sentimental reasons, beer options are very poor, everything else is incredible)
2) Shakespeare's (could be cosier but ticks pretty much every other box for me)
3) The Red Deer (see above)
4) The Bath Hotel (cool building and layout, good atmosphere)
5) Rutland (see above)
6) University Arms (sentimental value, Interesting old clubhouse building, good beer garden)
7) Beer Engine (on the periphery, a little snooty but I like the rooms)
8) Old Queens Head (bizarre location for a timberframe house, Pilsner Urquell and Czech food, cosy huge fireplace)
9) Sheffield Tap (amazing beer selection and unique venue full stop, bit pricey)
10) Three Tuns (not sure if this has re-opened yet)
11) Dog & Partridge (a superb old boozer but sometimes a bit too bleak rather than traditional)
12) Dorothy Pax - relatively new little bar by the canal. Always got plenty going on

Outside centre:

Fat Cat, Wellington, Sheaf View, Greystones, The Brothers Arms, White Lion, Cobden View, Princess, Closed Shop, Hallamshire House, Kelham Island Tavern, The Harlequin, The Cremorne, Blake Hotel, Gardeners Rest

Probably plenty more in areas I haven't visited

BlodwynPig

I will be in The Red Deer, 3pm on 21st June.

See you all there. Failing that, Pie and a Pint Pingers?

That's nowt pal, compared to what this lot are threatening. What started off as a joke thread has become a serious discussion of a possible Sheffield meet which I would feel some sense of obligation to attend, propelling myself from my ridiculously cramped comfort zone into a full blown social situation. I'd take a braying off you any day.

I've just realised these 6 pubs sit spaced along a straight walk of about 1 mile, so I'm going to take someone along a jaunt through them tonight. Looking forwards to Fagans, i'd not heard of it before this thread. What a pub crawl, can that be beaten?!
