This seems like it's going to be necessary with torrent crackdowns

https://www.cookdandbombd.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,72322.0.html

and the porn block coming in very soon.

So come on then let's have it out, which is the best VPN. This is an all vs all deathmatch, only the best VPN can survive (separate categories for free and paid VPN's)

I've been using Nord for a while. About £70 for two years on an offer. It seems fine, the customer support is good and I haven't received any warnings for torrenting but VPNs are inherently dodgy. Not sure why an unregulated, unaccountable online company is any more trustworthy with your data than a big ISP.

They're not. They're less likely to sell your information to big advertisers, but far more likely to do shady things with your details. The point of torrenting with a VPN is that VPN providers don't work with TV networks to monitor torrenting IP addresses and send out threatening letters.

Virgin VPN - 60 quid a month

You're not fooling anyone twice with that!

I'm on Nord and decided to just wade in and get 3 years worth.  So far so good, plenty of servers, nice and fast, good software for all OSes.  I went through TopCashBack for in theory 55% back, but my £43 has been "pending" for almost a month now so not holding my breath on that.

Downside if you decide to use a VPN everywhere for privacy, you'll be regarded by most hosts as a baddie and seeing a metric fuckton of CAPTCHAs.  It also makes Google hate you (surprise surprise) which meant I very nearly lost the Gmail account I use for 'research purposes' as they suddenly decided the account must have been compromised and made me answer near-impossible questions to prove ownership.

It's mostly a terrible idea, too. I trust most ISPs more than I trust most VPN providers. VPNing into your home or using a commercial VPN service is good if you're using dodgy wifi hotspots, but many VPNs are more dodgy than most hotspots.

BT aren't going to try to steal your identity. L33toCheapVPNsRUs might. I only use VPN services for very specific reason (torrent traffic, where I don't care about the data, I just don't want my ISP to yell at me).

I think it depends on the VPN.  If it's one in the States or elsewhere in the Five Eyes that says "we totally don't do any logging honest" you can almost see the fingers crossed behind their backs as they happily hoover up every bit of data you allow through them in the name of "anti terror" or "the children".  If you do a bit of research on the reputable ones, come to your own conclusions on the "but their billing company is in Lithuania!" thing (find out where most of the shit stirring comes from and hear their side of the story), find that they've been recently independently audited etc... I definitely trust them more than an ISP in the UK under orders to monitor everything.

To be honest I don't see how anyone outside the 5 eyes or 11 eyes or whatever multi-ocular beast is anymore trust worthy.

Mr. Offshore VPN: We don't hold logs or spy on you.

Mr. CIA: Here's a bag of money greater than your principles.

Mr. Offshore VPN: That'll do nicely.

That's why audits exist.  You could say the auditors are also paid by 3 letter agencies but there are only so many layers before I run out of tinfoil hats...

I'd also question the likelihood of paying a big bag of money to an overseas VPN vs. simply compelling every ISP in every country you touch to spy on you Or Else

Is Usenet still a viable alternative to torrents?

I posted this before, but if you have a look at https://www.privacytools.io/ they have details on the security aspects of VPNs and a host of other privacy services such as email etc.
