I'm not sure we should be imposing a rule like that on anyone.  No joke noms is enough.

I'm up for anything - as long as nobody trolls with an Andy Warhol 15-hour film or animal porn. Beyond that, I'm happy to be forced out of my comfort zone as they say these days.

I think a decent mix is probably best rather than making sure every choice is aiming for maximum obscurity, I don't think it has to be choices that have never come up here at all just films that don't get to get much wide spread/indepth discussion.

I was going to go suggest I pick a random starter but perhaps I should go first to show my idea of how it could work? I have a vague idea for some nominations that wouldt be neither American nore likely massively obscure I could probably finalise by the weekend for voting.

I'm up for it, if I've seen the film before I probably won't rewatch with my full attention though.

If there were two concurrent ones, one in English and one not (in other words one that doesn't requires much attention and one that does), I'd be down for that too. I've a lot of free time, apparently.

As far as criteria goes, I think it probably should just be:
(a) has literally everyone already seen it and do they remember it well
(b) would it easily survive a thread of its own without this framework (e.g. something like Blade Runner)
(c) is there much in it that seems like it could warrant any kind of discussion

Yep that seems a pretty good guide for choices, basically just providing a bit of focus for discussion on films that would otherwise likely only get the odd mention in the "non new" thread. Having each person pick a number of noms on their turn for others to vote on would also provide somewhat of a filter towards what everyone actually wants whilst avoiding anyone really dominating and causing ill feeling. It would also ensure a good deal of variety, I get the feeling if say everyone nominated something each time the results could end up favouring certain kind of cinema consistently.

I spose the best way to go about it is really just to see what works, I did a bit of searching on the net for other forum film clubs for my suggestions I'm guessing we'd probably find the best way of running it just by trial and error rather than prolonged debate. If we stuck with the idea of a central nomination thread but separate discussion threads for each final choice then that could make it easier to have more frequent choices(maybe once a week) if people want as discussions wouldn't get in each others way, you could always go back to an older thread when you got time to watch the film.

could you give us an example of what you have in mind?

I'd be interested in taking part, although I don't always have time / resources for films. If this happens, that is... (got burned once by the CaB magazine)

Again I don't think definite rules there would be ideal but moreso one person comes up with a series of nominations that are linked somehow, maybe by theme or genre or the director/star. That way the nomination process could have a bit more of a theme and some discussion as well rather than just being voting. Each person could make their turn a bit more of an event.

Again that's really why I suggested there be a central nomination/voting thread and then separate threads for each chosen films discussion, to make it easier to go back to them outside of the nominal window of discussion if people can't watch them in that period.

Greenie, do you mind dropping me a PM when this starts?  Been doing too much foruming recently and think I'll head off into the sunset for awhile.

I was actually planning to start the central thread on sunday, if people don't mind taking the first turn to come up with a list on linked nominations for others to vote on, maybe leave that for a week before going with the winning nom?

Seems like the best way to do things is to actually have a go early on and see what works and what doesn't then make adjustments.

Each get to nom a film and also vote, or one person noms - or it is a free for all?

My criteria for nominating a film is to pick something that I suspect 90% of may not have seen/may not have seen recently but that I know has genuine entertainment value. I would not suggest any Bela Tarr or Tarkovsky, but I would consider something under-rated.

I was suggesting a rota were each person gets to do all the noms maybe 3-5ish) on their turn and the others vote on their choice from them. That seems like a good middle ground to me that would give everyone a chance to have a pick discussed but also the other members some choice. As someone pointed out the weakness with everyone having a nomination each time beyond their being a lot of them could be you end up with either forum politics or a tyranny of the majority making a lot of similar choices.

Personally my feeling would be that if there just looking for obscure/underrated cinema recommendations then the "non new" thread already does a pretty good job there. If theres a weakness on the forum to me it seems to be that really widespread discussion ends up being limited to either recent releases of pretty well known films(your Blade Runners etc). I don't recall seeing much real discussion of films by Tarkovsky or Tarr(who I'd guess would be pretty obscure to many here), it ends up being more the odd mention that someone's watched them and maybe 1-2 replies. If its more about fostering discussion then even if a film your overly familiar with comes up then that seems less of a problem, you don't automatically need to rewatch it to discuss it.

Maybe the answer here is simply variety? a rota with one person doing the noms each time seems like it might work there, some weeks end up being watching recommendations that are obscure to you and others being films you've seen before but haven't really discussed here. This forum definitely doesn't seem to lack for people with interesting and varied tastes in cinema.

Ok I'v come up with an opening thread here.....

https://www.cookdandbombd.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=72422.msg3787819#msg3787819

Still very much of a trial basis of course but I'v made the first post a bit more formal incase it does end up as the long term thread with similar rules.

Just turn up in that thread, the members list is a rota for having a turn to nominate films and to stop sock puppet voting.
