OXBOW ARE REALLY GOOD THREAD

Their last album, Thin Black Duke, is probably one of my favourite... pieces of media of this decade. Furious, tightly-wound grief rock with horns and strings blasting all over it:

Recently bought King Of The Jews and that's properly kicking my arse as well, Angel in particular is something else. Any other Oxbow fans here?

Also, here's a pro-shot gig of them collaborating with Peter Brötzmann:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQegQooJLSo

But yeah, talk about Oxbow

the ouch cube

Great stuff, yeah. It's difficult for any mere piece of music to be actually scary, but Oxbow get closer than most. It's also difficult to hook newcomers in to what is appealing about them, given that the best description is probably "sexual assault rock", and that's not likely to make any friends.

JesusAndYourBush

I saw them play at The Pack Horse in Leeds in 2002.  A really small room that was absolutely rammed.  I was there to see one of the other bands but I remember it was a very lively performance.  Before Oxbow's set they were playing some interesting music from the PA, afterwards I asked a member of the band what it was and he gave me the CD - it was a long piece by Umm Kulthum and several short Scott Joplin (I think?) piano pieces.

Dirty Boy

THEY ARE REALLY GOOD, YES.

Thin Black Duke was my favourite album of that year (2016 was it?) and might be their most accessible overall. I love it when bands combine intense and noisy passages with twiddly, angular and off-kilter songwriting. The atonal string and brass elements of TBD work well and i wish more bands dabbled in that sort of mishmash (i know JG Thirlwell has worked extensively in that area, but i'm hard pushed to think of many more that do beyond the whole Jazzcore thing)

Serenade In Red is crushing my head at the minute, It's possibly my second favourite. I haven't heard the first couple of albums yet.
