rasta-spouse's turn to come up with the next lot of nominations, the main question of the suggestions really seems to be availability. I mean were not going to be able to go with stuff that's all on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc every time but what is peoples preference? Netflix/Amazon? DVD/BR's and if the latter at what kind of price?

Justwatch.com is a good place to check availability of stuff.

Sorry I was a bit tied up with things last week so didn't bother to understand the rules.

Would have taken at least 3 votes to change the result anyway and as mentioned Marienbad does seem a good choice in that its short and open to a lot of theories.

I spose the voting on noms itself can be somewhat of a filter for availability, people going for what they are more likely to watch.

*** CaB Film Club Rota #2 Nominations - rasta-spouse ***

So I was listening to someone on a podcast who had worked with Luc Besson describe him as a guy with "a camera for a head". I thought it was a very interesting turn of phrase, and quite apt for the Cinema du Look lot. It got me thinking about other directors who had that particular affliction to the point perhaps where the narrative came second, but in a way that the scenes filmed were so mesmeric that it didn't matter.

Here's a list of films, currently on my mind, that have a mesmeric quality. The first is Bleak Moments, and it is the exception - it's not visually impressive in the slightest - but something about the performances and what Leigh channels from the actors is profound in its mundanity. I'm always hypnotised by this film. Ghostbox Cowboy is a new film, it's not a comedy in the "haha" sense, it's more a surreal odyssey like Repo Man or The Magic Christian, shot like kooky Dogme 95 and each frame seems packed with immersive detail. I was really impressed with it so put it on the list. Another choice is a minor tv work from Bela Tarr - only one hour long, composed of only two shots, and a story we all know inside out. The whole film is on youtube so it's something accessible to all. The other films you've probably heard of and are super, yes, it'd be great if I could place a very economic Sarris-style sentence on each director but I lack the condensational ability. Check them out:

1. Bleak Moments (1971, Mike Leigh) - excerpt - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtLhmm1rg9Q

2. Ghostbox Cowboy (2018, John Maringouin) - trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGHdtPCsYg4

3. Macbeth (1982, Bela Tarr) - entire film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqYAesm3W0Y&t=501s

4. American Astronaut (2001, Cory McAbee)

5. Underground (1996, Emir Kusturica) - trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYTvmLvLchs

Don't ask me why, but I think I'm gonna go for Ghostbox Cowboy.

So... how do you join?

You just have, really the only reason for having a members list was to help avoid sock puppet voting and to keep a rota for choosing nominations.

mothman

Coo. OK, I think I'd go for American Astronaut, because I had to look it up as I was confused about why we'd be watching that film where Charlize Theron's husband is an astronaut who might be an alien, and this actual film sounds mental.

Avril Lavigne

I think I'm going to say Ghostbox Cowboy just because of how bizarre everything about it seems.

greenman

I'll go with Underground based on the previous hype Raste gave it.

zomgmouse

I've been meaning to see Bleak Moments and The American Astronaut for AGES. Tough pick between them. Although I think I've been meaning to see The American Astronaut for even longer, so let's go with that for my vote.

greenman

What kind of timescale do people want to keep to now? Marienbad discussion seems to be slowing down and the threads still going to be there anyway so I was thinking maybe start off with the winner of these noms after the weekend?

rasta-spouse

I'm happy to have a relaxed pace (bit woolly, yes), I just watched Marienbad last night and am mulling it over....

Part of the reason I thought separate threads for each discussion was the way to go is that there doesn't really need to be a cutoff point when one discussion ends as another starts, that is the Marienbad discussion wouldn't need to end when your winning nomination starts. Probably in favour of more obscure cinema as well which people might take awhile to track down.

Sin Agog

Found a good working streaming link of Ghostbox Cowboy if it wins. Hit me up if so.

Already got/seen American Astronaut so I'll be set for that (yay me).  You caught Stingray Sam as well, rasta?  I like the soundstagey space western vibe of those two.  They're like Cowboy Bebop if people randomly sung all the time.

Small Man Big Horse

I'm voting for Ghostbox Cowboy as I've seen most of the others, though I'd have no issue with watching them again as I enjoyed them all, The American Astronaut especially.

American Astronaut looks good to me.

Edit: this'll be my last post for a while, so maybe you should take my name off the list,  sorry. Hope my vote still counts!

Yeah, it's much fun. Narrated by Niles from Frasier.

Sebastian Cobb

Bleak Moments and Ghostbox Cowboy are the ones leaping out at me, but I guess it's Ghostbox that's getting the most votes.

Current votes...

Bleak Moments - 0

Ghostbox Cowboy - 4

Macbeth - 2

American Astronaut - 3

Underground - 1

Les Amants Du Pont Neuf - 0

Lost Oliver

All of these look bloody brilliant. I'll go Les Amants Du Pont Neuf  just because I fancy Juliette Binoche.

greenman

I'll start off the next discussion thread at the weekend ok? so vote before sunday if you want to.

Oh and zongmouse mouse is the next on the nomination list.

Dex Sawash

So it's Ghostbox Cowboy then? It is on Prime (america)

greenman

Yep I'll start the thread now so if Zongmouse wants to post the next lot of noms now he can.

Interesting that nobody wanted to see LAduPN. But then, I'm of the generation that was at uni when it came out, and we all saw it then...

I did nearly vote for it having been worked though Boy Meets Girl and Mauvais Sang in the last year, whilst I enjoyed them I admit I did kind of feel that was "enough" of his style for me in the near future though.

The trailer looks great, no idea what  the hell it is about from watching that though. I'll probably watch it, need to watch some proper films as I have now run out of Stathem ones.

zomgmouse

Hello my turn now it seems. Here's a few choices of horror films I've yet to watch:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Angst
• Spring
• The Prophecy
• Cemetery Man

Sin Agog

Not sure I fancy watching a film like Angst right now, but Cemetery Man, the Bodysnatchers remake, and Spring are all much fun.  Will marinate on it.
