Whole series out on Netflix today.

QuoteOur Planet places clearer emphasis on the fragility and interconnectedness of all the species and eco-systems on display, and on the huge impact humanity has had on them in so short a time. "In one human lifetime," says Attenborough in the opening minutes, "wildlife populations have fallen by an average of 60%. The stability of nature can no longer be taken for granted."

I haven't watched any yet, but I wanted to be the one to make a thread so I can feel big and important.

So find out which human is doing it and put them in prison. Come on Attenborough, THINK.

Watched the first episode. I was worried at first it would just be a litle sprinkling of "Yeah, this species is a bit fucked 'cause of us", but towards the latter half thankfully it does get a bit more explicitly about climate change (relatively optimistic, althogh I guess Attenborough can't just start screaming OH GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE) and links to Ourplanet.com, in partnership with WWF. It has a good structure/story arc to it.

The music feels spot on to me as well. I look forward to watching the rest of it.

Didn't Attenborough kill the last Dodo or something in his first documentary?

Yes, but it was on Zoo Quest.

Has anyone watched more of these than the first one? I watched the second one and fucking hell it is bleak-specifically the bit with the walrus overcrowding. I've never felt more powerless, weak and generally shitty about being human after watching a nature doc. What can I actually DO? Genuinely feels like it's too late and everything is fucked. I know that's not the message to take away from these, but flippin' heck...

curious about the music, in the trailer, it was some sort of coldplay and sons thing, - what is it like in main show?

the bit with the walrus

I didn't see the whole program but walked into the room during that bit. Fucking hell. Absolutely heartbreaking. Can't stop thinking about those poor buggers.

Comfort yourself in the fact if their flippers were hands you'd currently be pleading with your Walrus Master to be given a crumb from his seafood banquet as he squats over your head taking a large fishy shit.

Yeah, completely horrible. People talk about the apocalyptic ramifications of climate change but that illustrated it better than all of the fire and brimstone prophecies. A species  of huge, powerful, simple animal, totally adapted to the environment it evolved in, blindly falling to its death because it is now in surroundings that are no longer what it's used to. Absurdist and profoundly upsetting.

Funny though!

Yeah, the idea of a walrus falling off a cliff is funny in the abstract, I gotta admit. Turns out the reality doesn't quite match up. : (

Gogglebox was pretty incredible the week that was on (as it is every single week this season). Just complete devastation, and then the following week back to chicken kievs and a 30 second sequence chuckling at XR protestors

Hey, Punk!

I'm sure there is a comedy sketch in this notion of nature porn, can't think of anything particularly subtle, but basically a creamy warming sketch with the buttery narrator's voice imploring you to forget the encroaching death of this rock we inhabit. Look at the jumping antelope, the rutting rabbit, and the sleek dolphin, aren't they gorgeous?

Does this exist already?

Not sure, but The Onion's Horrifying Planet series is pretty much the opposite of what you described.
