Oh Lord, just heard the intro to what I thought was Queen's "I want to break free".  Turns out it was actually "You only live once" by The Strokes.  Sounds like a fucking sample

Fergie (from the Black Eyed Peas), has a solo single out called 'London Bridge', which is basically Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl'. You can sing one chorus on top of the other. If you want. Although why would you?

There's another one off their newest album that has a chorus melody identical to 'Mandy' by Barry Manilow. "You came and you bought me a turkey, on my vacation away from work-ey". Yeah, that one.

The Strokes used to only rip people's sounds off. A little bit of Johnathan Richman here, a little bit of Velvets there. It's whole tunes now. And really fucking well known ones at that.

Lee

Anyone else think Shakira sounds like Buggles-era Trevor Horn at times? It's that deep-but-not-that-deep voice she sometimes puts on, apparently to demonstrate her rather pissy vocal range.

danielreal2k

Radiohead's There There & Finn Bros Only talking sense.(album version)

Hairy Chin

That Jack Johnson one (I think it's 'Sitting Waiting Wishing', but I can't be sure off the top of my head) is just him playing 'Heart and Soul' on a guitar all the bloody way through.

thepuffpastryhangman

This is a fairly good one?

The opening of Project X - Frank Zappa/The Mother Of Invention (album - Uncle Meat)

bares more than a passing resemblance to

the opening of Kiss Me - Sixpence None The Richer (single)

Marvin

They are the same, in fact, but to be fair it's just two chords in the same order, and a fairly common two chords in the same order, off the top of my head it's also heard in Hurt by Nine Inch Nails (and Johnny Cash).

thepuffpastryhangman

The strumming is rather similar too. Though I realise that's probably a pretty common pattern too. Oh, and the time. I'm no muso...does this mean the chords, the key and the time, as well as the strumming pattern are all identical?

Marvin

Listening again, they pretty much are, the timing's a bit different but not much.

"Alfie" by Lily Allen is such a horrific steal of Sandie Shaw's "Puppet On A String", I'm surprised lawyers haven't been involved.

Only just noticed this topic, so I narrowly avoided posting this somewhere less relevant.

When you were young by the Killers sounds like In the mouth a desert by Pavement.

I keep hearing it on that advert. I thought it sounded Pavementy, partly (some of) the tune, partly the vocal style, but only narrowed it down to the specific song after a listen of S + E.

Broken Heart (Japanese version) - Spiritualized

Days Like This Keep Me Warm - The Polyphonic Spree

Not identical, just similar. Bits of their middles mainly, without the vocal, naturally. To me anyway.

Toad in the Hole

Dirty Pretty Things' 'Bang Bang You're Dead' is totally ripped off from Brendan Benson's 'What I'm Looking For'.

Brad

Ivor Cutler - Bounce Bounce Bounce

sounds like

Jacques Brel - Au Suivant

rudi

God, not another Brel/Cutler rip-off.....

Shoulders?-Stomach!

I'm pretty sure that Take That single sounds like something Darius (that popstars one) did a while back. Was it 'Colourblind' or something?

Maybe it's just the singing that sounds identical but the melody also rings a few bells.

I don't hear it at all. The killers song sounds more like U2 or something to me.
Good song though (the pavement one).

The Mumbler

Heard I Just Called To Say I Love You in a shop this morning. Have only now realised that my least favourite song by Stevie Wonder (perhaps worse than Ebony & Ivory) is cut from the same cloth as Elvis's It's Now Or Never (right down to the "cha-cha-cha" at the end), which is itself adapted from 1929's O Sole Mio.

The guitar part at the end of The Essex Green's 'All Summer Long' is a dead ringer for Bob Dylan's 'You Ain't Going Nowhere'.

Yeah, I can kind of hear what you mean â€" ever ever so slightly. A bit of an inspiration for Stevie there perhaps. But it's only slight. It's a great song though â€" as is E&I â€" the only problem with either track being a dated 80s production, oversue of synthesisers etc. On paper (ie in essence, and if covered), they're both classics.

George White

https://youtu.be/AL7kdIAHtl8?t=171 The theme to the short-lived Breaking Away echoes the deliberately sitcommy Mrs. Brown's Boys theme.

surely sample?

Dukes of Stratosphear - Vanishing Girl is just The Lion Sleeps Tonight

itsfredtitmus

Madness - Tomorrow's (Just Another Day) inexplicably sounds like the theme to The Sweeney

I got the latest Mick Head album yesterday and I was so convinced that a track from it was a cover. There's no video for the album release online but this old live recording should show what I mean.

I just realised the riff from Several Sins from by the Birthday Party is basically Rock Lobster slowed down.

It's the same scale but not exactly the same I suppose. Though the B52s may have got the riff from the 1964 Shout, Shake & Go by Brian Diamond & The Cutters.

Always thought The Dandy Warhols' Bohemian Like You sounded like a section of The Stones' Brown Sugar, but it's actually closer to part of Little Bitch by The Specials.
