Upskirting now a crime in England and Wales
« on: April 12, 2019, 04:21:48 PM »
Already a crime in Scotland.

Took long enough but glad to see a law against these perverts. Upskirting is a disgusting invasion of privacy.

Well naturally that would be the case, there are way more skirt wearers over there.

Bet Benny Hill would have a sketch with him doing that, if camera phones existed then.

It's funny if it's a man though.

Apparently so - when I've worn a kilt I've had several people come up to me and lift it up or attempt to do so without warning (or, of course, asking!)

One bloke I remember in the student bar at Exeter and about three women together in a supermarket. Very much framed as "for the lols" :/

Anyway, somewhat besides the point - it's great to see this law come through, especially as a couple of Tories were seemingly trying to prevent it from doing so. Shameful it's taken so long to get on the books.

How often do you deem it necessary to walk around while wearing a kilt ? Kilt in the supermarket ? ( The Raincoats consider less blatantly Caledonian parochial- appealling rewrite )

There won't be one.  This isn't law made by legal precedent, but by statute.

Did this need a specific law?  I thought there were already laws in place that would make this prosecutable.

Not complaining, mind.  The idea of Theresa May having to consider upskirt photos, let alone speak publicly about them, is more than worth it.

Yeah, seems like it would be covered under this: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/42/section/67

How the law was changed
Ms Martin, 27, was waiting to watch The Killers perform at the British Summer Time music festival in London's Hyde Park in July 2017 when a man put his phone between her legs and took pictures.
After informing the police, she was shocked to discover upskirting was not a specific offence and the case had been closed.

When the police officers arrived - a man and a woman - I did my best to explain what had happened, even though I was a complete mess. They were kind and compassionate. One of them told me I "should be able to go to a festival in 30-degree heat and wear a skirt without worrying about this happening".

They separated me and the blond guy and questioned him for a minute or two. When they came back over to me the male police officer was apologetic - he told me, "Unfortunately, I've had to look at the picture. It shows more than you'd likeā€¦ but it's not graphic. So there's not much we can do because you can't see anything bad. I'm going to be honest - you might not hear much from us."

The police finished by reassuring me that they had "made him delete the picture". At this point, because of the mess I was in, it didn't occur to me that this was my evidence.
The photograph wasn't considered graphic because I had knickers on - if I had chosen not to wear any underwear it might have been dealt with entirely differently - but I don't see how what I was wearing should affect their response.
Five days later I was sitting on a bus to the Latitude festival with a bag of clothes I'd spent far too long considering. Should I pack skirts, or was that stupid after what just happened?
I received a call from the police, who told me that the case had been closed but they once again assured me that they had deleted the picture. With a clear head and time to think about it, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This wasn't good enough.

That is a succinctly honest post .

When I was a teen my, dress sense was not trying to outperform any at comedy gig. I wore mini skirt.

Any future upskirt should have the image of Theresa May giving them an hour long powerpoint lecture on up skirting before attempting the crime.

I imagine you'd feel a bit lame if you were doing some hard time on the Beast Wing, and the seasoned nonces are all talking about what they did.

'It woz me who pulled that woman in me van. Threw her aht the back door when I woz done wiv 'er.'

'That's naffink. I'm a bushwhacker - I jumps out at them in the alleys.'

'Pah - child's play mate. I insinutated myself into care institutions, and abused my position of powah over a number of years.'

'Anyway... what did you do, Gary?'

'Um... upskirting photos. No, stop laughing. It isn't funny. It's actually really hardcore!'

The British press screen-grabbing Susanna Reid crossing her legs or crouching down - I mean flashing her knickers, the slag - seems to be an entire genre all to itself.

I'm just wondering when we'll get someone dropping their camera phone near the foot of a woman in a skirt, in a genuine accident, only for the poor sod to come a cropper with the law.

Indeed... God the only good thing about climate devastation is that eventually The Sun and The Mail won't be able to function.

Publishing will be moved to the two new navy aircraft carriers as the rest of the UK vanishes below the waves and dropped into the floating communities that remain.

Non sequitor but if we truly face climate extinction then the climate extinction movement is the most corrupt and immoral in human history. For there is a proven, viable and 100% guaranteed solution to the climate crisis that we could do tomorrow and would fix the whole problem within 20 years. Yet we don't do it. Either it's not a real crisis or everyone involved is criminally negligent.

Are you suggesting upskirting could fix climate change? If so I'm not convinced, I mean surely it just encourages more women to wear underwear and the amount of pollution knicker factories already produce is a bad, bad thing.

Former Robbs Celebs fan here as well, although I always preferred the magazine shoots and still images from racy independent films early in their career that they now regret.  The paparazzi shots were creepy and felt uncomfortably voyeuristic.

But, yeah, with crowds of paps trying to photograph a glimpse of knickers when a 'sleb type gets into taxis outside London hotels, or focusing their long lenses on them sunbathing, no wonder a generation of men thinks it's no big deal to do the same to some random at a festival.  Why one rule for them and another for us?  She should be flattered, right lads?  Etc.
