What?

The data suggests we are very close to being fucked. Some models are more accurate than others but the overwhelming LIKELYHOOD is that we are fucked; possibly already but certainly soon. There are literally no credible people who deny this unless they have either the political or commercial motivation to blindly deiay any action or are just utter fuckwits who don't understand the basic principles of what Science is and how Science works.

I can put you in touch with my mate who is a senior lecturer of climate Science at the Open University and holds dual PhDs in Particle and Theoretical Physics if you wanna discuss the data with her.

Yeah but my question is why do the people with all the power and money in the world not believe it?

Uncle TechTip

They do, but they want to retain their money and power. Also by possessing money and power, they will buy their way out of the worst effects.

This is so obvious that it should be clear anyone claiming to not understand it is just arguing in bad faith.

biggytitbo

Going by the scale of the transformation required wouldn't there actually be an immense amount of profit in it?

Fambo Number Mive

Consumerism is a part of the problem, charity shops reduce this but I think the rush to get the latest technology doesn't help. I mean who needs a blu-ray DVD?

However I think it's linked to the stress of modern life and how low lots of people feel, if mental health care was improved would there be less people shopping just to cheer themselves up?

No, you are wrong I'm afraid.

.....There would be fewer people shopping just to cheer themselves up, haha!!

I've never seen so many white people in one place

You've obviously never been to Glastonbury. Anyway can't stop, got a shitty news programme that no one watches to prepare. How shall we address this - too many people in the world? Do those twathead protestors use oil products ? Marxist fuckshits can't handle any opinion rather their own ?

Mind you if they got in the way of Bermondsey Dave they're seriously fucked. He takes no shit. I'd love it if a bunch of lads drove them fuckers into the river.

ER plan to close down the underground tommorow. I think this is a mistake. Public transport should not be impeded, in fact I think they should let buses through the smaller demos (not the ones in Central London perhaps but certainly the Nottingham road closures). The government also don't care if the Tube is disrupted. The establishment don't use the Tube or buses. Some MPs do, but they'll just get taxis instead.

(Edited the above as I have checked their website and they will be disrupting the Tube tommorow).

What did Jools Holland and Paula Yates ever do to them?

What are you guys doing about all this? I'm mentioning ER to everyone I know, recommending they watch Are Planet (this is a good one I think, because everyone likes DA and they'll be tricked into confronting some pretty bracing climate messages) and sending people links to stuff about the book 'The Uninhabitable Earth'. I can see myself joining in with some of these protests soon.

Last time I asked my colleagues if they'd heard of ER, none of them had. I really hope all this action at least gets everybody talking about it/them. It's actually quite shocking how many people don't realise how bad the situation is and how quickly it's getting worse. At the moment, it feels like governments don't need to be doing much because not enough people are making enough fuss. Every single person on the planet who wants to live should be sympathetic to ER. Mind you, it's almost as obvious to me that people should want decent schools, hospitals and public services and just look at how that's going. Humanity is fucked.

On the class thing, is it possible - and I'm just thinking aloud here, perfectly prepared to be proved wrong - that the presence of more middle-class people on these demoes might help encourage more middle-class people to take notice and participate? Rather than just waving climate change protestors away as unemployed layabouts, crusties, etc.? Because I am middle-class, and I know many middle-class people, plenty of whom do precisely that.

Ha! Nice one. No, not clued up on ER/XR, but pretty clued up on how fucked we are. Luckily, I've been referring to the group by the full name when talking to others, so no harm done.

You can't be that clued up if you don't know they call themselves XR.

Reducing the serious overuse of the letter E, whilst helping the endangered letter X.

brat-sampson

Yeah, but I net some of them have, like, phones. Or used some method of transport other than crawling to reach these. Or sometimes buy food from Waitrose. Or... something.

Ergo their entire argument, backed by the bulk of scientists, is namby pamby leftist conspiracy bullshit.

How do you disrupt rail? You can't stand on the lines. Will it be obstructing the turnstiles at the stations?

Going by the scale of the transformation required wouldn't there actually be an immense amount of profit in it?

It might be worth reposting Cory Morningstar's series of articles on this issue - http://www.theartofannihilation.com/the-manufacturing-of-greta-thunberg-a-decade-of-social-manipulation-for-the-corporate-capture-of-nature-crescendo/

Link is not an endorsement, but it does seem pretty obvious that if the scale of action we are told is required actually happened, the amount of profit in it would be so staggering that the world's elite financial interests would absolutely co-opt this as a cause.

Zetetic

Why hasn't it - yet - happened regardless of its wider utility?

I think the wider point being made is that in a capitalist society, attempts to bring about large-scale change end up engaging deliberately or otherwise with capital on its terms. (Which I'm not saying is a good thing.)

Ending apartheid in South Africa ultimately created vast opportunities for profit (by the world's elite financial interests if you like), for example. Yet it didn't happen overnight? Why? Is the only reason that it happened because of this ultimate marginal profitability?

biggytitbo

Didn't it already happen with carbon credits? Morningstar argues, I'm not sure how convincingly as it's such a complex issue, that the same cancerous financialisation approach that we saw there is going to be applied to nature itself

Anyway, how what's the strategy about attempting to disrupt public transport?

QuoteClimate change activists are planning to disrupt London Underground services, continuing a wave of protests which have brought the city to a standstill.

I presume the extinction rebellion is in favour of leaving the EU?

Zetetic

It's interesting that XR's focus for nonviolent disruption is focused mostly on public life, streets in London. Perhaps specifically in pursuit of the 2 million people target.

I wonder (idly) if they're likely to have to pivot to something more focused on specific interests to ultimately be effective. But that doesn't sit so easily with the emphasis on it being a systemic problem.

biggytitbo

Every time on Sky News, they go interview the protesters and they're trustafarian types, they must be singling them out deliberately now which is very unscrupulous of them.

Anyway, they just said they don't know anything about trying to disrupt the tube, so perhaps it was just an unsubstantiated rumour. Strategically it would be weird to switch from trying to disrupt the roads to public transport.

If only they added some racism to the mix, then you could stop sneering and get behind them.

Sky news are taking the piss now, they got someone on now from Extinction Rebellion who makes Rees Mogg look like Dennis Skinner:

Evening Osborne reports wifi on the tube has been turned off and more police on tube stations.

From BBC photos it looks more like people approaching retirement, as well as people who have specifically taken the week off work:

QuoteBen Moss, 42, from Islington, north London, said he had glued himself to the bars of the lorry as "personal action to the moral issue of the climate crisis and ecological collapse".

"I'm doing this because I want the government to do something. I've got a week off work - if more is necessary I can make my excuses," he added.

The XR meeting I went to seemed to be people 18-70 with class mix (though more middle class), but probably leaning more towards white people.

That guy in biggytitbo's photo does look like a twat though. I don't recall seeing any "hey, it's a twat!" people in person in XR.
