Consumerism is a part of the problem, charity shops reduce this but I think the rush to get the latest technology doesn't help. I mean who needs a blu-ray DVD?

ER plan to close down the underground tommorow. I think this is a mistake. Public transport should not be impeded, in fact I think they should let buses through the smaller demos (not the ones in Central London perhaps but certainly the Nottingham road closures). The government also don't care if the Tube is disrupted. The establishment don't use the Tube or buses. Some MPs do, but they'll just get taxis instead.

What are you guys doing about all this? I’m mentioning ER to everyone I know, recommending they watch Are Planet (this is a good one I think, because everyone likes DA and they’ll be tricked into confronting some pretty bracing climate messages) and sending people links to stuff about the book ‘The Uninhabitable Earth’. I can see myself joining in with some of these protests soon.

Last time I asked my colleagues if they’d heard of ER, none of them had. I really hope all this action at least gets everybody talking about it/them. It’s actually quite shocking how many people don’t realise how bad the situation is and how quickly it’s getting worse. At the moment, it feels like governments don’t need to be doing much because not enough people are making enough fuss. Every single person on the planet who wants to live should be sympathetic to ER. Mind you, it’s almost as obvious to me that people should want decent schools, hospitals and public services and just look at how that’s going. Humanity is fucked.

On the class thing, is it possible - and I’m just thinking aloud here, perfectly prepared to be proved wrong - that the presence of more middle-class people on these demoes might help encourage more middle-class people to take notice and participate? Link is not an endorsement, but it does seem pretty obvious that if the scale of action we are told is required actually happened, the amount of profit in it would be so staggering that the world's elite financial interests would absolutely co-opt this as a cause.

I think the wider point being made is that in a capitalist society, attempts to bring about large-scale change end up engaging deliberately or otherwise with capital on its terms. (Which I'm not saying is a good thing.)

Ending apartheid in South Africa ultimately created vast opportunities for profit (by the world's elite financial interests if you like), for example. Yet it didn't happen overnight? Why? Is the only reason that it happened because of this ultimate marginal profitability?

It's interesting that XR's focus for nonviolent disruption is focused mostly on public life, streets in London. Perhaps specifically in pursuit of the 2 million people target.

I wonder (idly) if they're likely to have to pivot to something more focused on specific interests to ultimately be effective. But that doesn't sit so easily with the emphasis on it being a systemic problem.

From BBC photos it looks more like people approaching retirement, as well as people who have specifically taken the week off work:

The XR meeting I went to seemed to be people 18-70 with class mix (though more middle class), but probably leaning more towards white people.
