hahaha there probably *is* some truth to that. T said (some half-a-dozen years back now so her opinion could have changed) that she wanted me to put my energies into something productive rather than worrying about our relationship which, as far as she was concerned, was behind her and not worth agonising over.

I actually think the conversation around consent has changed massively over that time - a lot of blogs and opinions I was reading which were treated as outsider, laughable or not worth talking about, became/ have become mainstream. Even without all of my self-reflection and guilt, I don't think the 21-year-old me would now consider anyone of sixth form age suitable to date. I also think the notion that consent has to be always clearly affirmative and basically enthusiastic has become mainstream. There are still creeps, but they're getting challenged more and more often. There are people far better placed than me to fight that fight as long as I continue to maintain my own healthy relations with other people and challenge any coercion or harassment when I see it (which I do).

As such, after a decade of being pretty single-track, putting my obsessive energies into campaigning on climate change and biodiversity loss makes a lot of psychological, moral and pragmatic sense, I think!

1. Was the peadohunter acting in 'good faith'
2. Did the peasohunter take reasonable steps to find who they were chatting to was an adult.

Depending on the law in a particular state and the circumstances of the case deception can be a defence for the peasohunter if they thought the were speaking to an adult.

Blokes calling him a bitch and saying he's being a turtle under his coat. Saying he needs a man card and sniggering.

I don't know if I've ever told this story on CaB before but roughly a year ago now, myself and my old housemate were at a pub called Head of Steam which is one of two pubs connected to Huddersfield train station. The pub gas two rooms, one to the left and one to the right leading to the toilets, as well as a room at the back which connects to both front rooms as well as out the back to the train platforms.

We'd gone there to watch the jazz, which happens there every Wednesday in the room to the left. The jazz normally begins between about 8:00 and 8:30. We'd arrived at about 7 and I'd been through to the left room about three times for a piss (i was still drinking alcohol at this time) and I hadn't really taken notice of the young lad (roughly mid 20's) sat waiting for someone the first time I went through for a piss because why would I. I didn't really pay much notice the third time when some older bloke was sat next to him chatting to him.

The jazz had been on for about 10 minutes and I went out for a cig. Behind me the young lad, now with a football scarf covering his face was being escorted by the older guy, who I noticed had an earpiece. He was escorted around a wall and then a woman and another guy appear and start questioning him aggressively but I couldn't hear clearly what was being said. Not wanting to intrude, having no idea what the fuck was going on or potentially getting myself into, I went back inside. I told my flatmate what was going on, he goes out to investigate, comes back and says the police are there. We ask the landlady if she has any idea what exactly is going on so she goes out to investigate. After a bit of waiting, watching the jazz band etc. Turns out they were pedo hunters catching a potential pedo. The twist?
The guy they caught used to be part of their team.

Anyway that's my account of my experience with the pedo hunters.

In my opinion, looking at the facebook groups and their comments, it's seemingly worthwhile pedos existing for these people just so they can express some bloodlust. It's like a target for some deep bubbling rage that exists within them that someone NEEDS to be punished for something. Obviously im not going to defend people who want to fuck children but it is very curious how this specific crime attracts such anger in certain individuals while others don't. The livestreaming thing is obviously just bizarre. I don't think I need to talk about how damaging it could be if they got the wrong person/address etc.

Funny this came back up today.  A cop in the US has just been done after being catfished by some paedo-hunter bloke initially pretending to be a 19-year-old girl on Tinder.  Apparently he told him at some point that his character was "actually 16", but that didn't deter him too much.  Apparently.  Of course, as always, no transcripts have been made available.

I saw a discussion between several people on a Slack, and basically anything said about the ethical dubiousness or effectiveness or any sort of ramifications of this sort of thing was completely shut down.  These are otherwise aggressively liberal, cop-hating folk, and part of me wonders if they'd have sang a different tune if it weren't a cop getting done for noncing.  As it is, they're using the same defenses you would for a cop pretending to be a drug dealer to sting prospective buyers.  Also as it is, sensible points about 16 not really being counted as a "child" in many countries or even states, and advising against calling him a "child-fucking cop" when there has been absolutely zero evidence of either children or fucking involved were responded to with "gross", "not okay" and basically ended with "we're not comfortable talking about this anymore, shut up or get the fuck out".

I'm at the point where I'm honestly not sure if being skeptical/critical of these paedo-hunters is a woke take or not.  It seems as though the majority of criminal experts, psychologists and law enforcement agencies are in agreement, but there's still just enough hysteria surrounding the issue to turn both sides of the political spectrum into garden-variety "hang the paedos" Daily Mail readers.

A fully grown woman there, who willfully chose to act as the bait in a sting, blaming a peadophile for her missing work and not eating or sleeping, due to her disgust.  Nobody forced you to act as bait, you stupid, cretinous cunt.

It's been said many times before within this thread but it bears repeating; you know that somethings seriously fucked up with these hunters, when you end up hating them more than you do the peadophile themselves.  These people are the worst.  The absolute worst.  This hunting shit needs to be made illegal.  Every time that I watch one of these video (not something I make a habit of, I'm glad to say), I end up fuming and wanting to kick the living shit out of the hunters.  I loathe ignorance and stupidity, especially when it goes hand in hand with causing more harm than good and these hunters are the living embodiment of everything that I despise about humanity.  They're one step shy of getting out the torches and pitchforks.

Hardly any.  It's a part of the problem with the current system and those who may be so inclined to seek help before it gets to the stage of arrest and prison, may well be too frightened to do so, thanks to the fear mongering of the peadophile hunters and the tabloids.

The hysteria surrounding it basically makes any real, useful discussion impossible - even among your peers.  And I remember one psychologist publicly advocating against increasingly harsh jail sentences and emphasizing the importance of available and new treatments, so naturally everyone assumed he must be a paedo himself.  In online discussion, I've  seen that happen almost instantly whenever someone even tries to offer a bit of nuance.  Bizarrely, these people seem to think the status quo now is fine and works and they just get to marvel at the monsters on parade, but it's doing absolutely nothing to examine or address the actual issue.

The issue itself is also murky as fuck now, thanks to the conflation of "statutory rape" and outright paedophilia/child molestation.
