Say you have a friend who's going to take LSD with his pal and might like to listen to some music. What would you recommend?

So far I have:
Pet Sounds/Smile - Beach Boys
Begin - The Millenium
Pink Floyd
Parliament/Funkadelic
Boards of Canada
Chill Out - The KLF
Selected Ambient Works - Aphex Twin

Which is probably too much already. But I'm interested in what you have to say

chveik

the last time I had some shrooms I listened to Forest Swords. great experience.

It doesn't matter what you listen to, it will all sound awful and terrifying.

Yeah, I don't do so good with the acid.  I spend the whole time desperately screaming at my ego not to go and die on me; your personality's not a construct at all and don't let this bloody drug end this great thing we have going on.

I recommend nice music he's already very familiar with.

Chill Out and Boards are excellent in that scenario. Pink Floyd and the Beach Boys would be a waste.

Here are my recommendations:

Chrome - Blood on the Moon
Chrome - Half Machine Lip Moves
Cabaret Voltaire - The Living Legends
Cabaret Voltaire - Mix-Up
The Residents - Commercial Album
Plus-tech Squeeze Box - Cartooom!
Coil - Love's Secret Domain*
Pan Sonic - A
Atom™ - Leidgut
Boredoms - Super æ
F.X. Randomiz - Goflex
Mouse on Mars - Niun Niggung
Can - Future Days
Matmos - Supreme Balloon
The Dukes of Stratosphear - 25 O'Clock

*See what they did, there?

Nah, boring. And no guarantee of a good time. Sometimes new stuff that makes no sense is easier to accept than familiar stuff that suddenly makes no sense. Push the envelope. Embrace uncertainty.

Well if you're willing to foot Blinder Data's mate's psychiatry bills...

You're right that it's impossible to always know how someone will react.  Even something you've heard a thousand times can suddenly sprout strange limbs.

It's only music. That's what you have to keep in mind.

Indeed. The thing about new music is you have fewer expectations. Having everything you thought you knew about your old favourites torn away can be a little unsettling...

I think I may just be too much like Obelix.  So permanently tweaked I have no need for Getafix's potion any longer.

that's one bloody lovely post

grassbath

Pharaoh Sanders - Karma
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians (1998 recording)
GAS - Pop
Shpongle - Nothing Lasts... But Nothing is Lost

all went over pretty well for me, as well as Dark Side of the Moon boringly enough. Stuff with a warm, embracing, positive sound and a fairly relaxed or at least consistent tempo. Boards of Canada have far too much of a dark undercurrent.

Cuntbeaks

I can testify to Faust being used as a gateway to a higher dimension on shrooms. Some carefully selected tracks though, as they can also open the door to darker things. The last time, as soon as Faust went on, we were immediately transported up, and away. Thrilling, sublime and filled with boundless invention. Happy to provide a suitable tracklist if required. Be careful though, whatever you follow it up with will sound positively pedestrian. Unless it's...

Beaumont Hannant - Texturology. From the first few notes you know this is gonna be a journey. Cinematic, perfectly paced and delivered with precision, it provides an incredible, pretension free, psych out opportunity.

Edit to say, i would stay away from Aphex Ambient Works 2  far too shadowy and gloomy. Perfect soundtrack to a bad trip. BOC can also be dangerous, although I did have a wonderful shrrom/salvia experience to Geogaddi.

Yes, please. I've got the Faust Tapes and heard some of their other stuff. Need more pointers.

It's great but a lot's happened since then. Mouse on Mars, for example.

I'd say the problem with SAW2 is that it's also showing its age. The tracks are too long and not enough happens. Perhaps that's why you can find your mind wandering to darker things. On the other hand, Bucephalus Bouncing Ball and the Windowlicker ep are an absolute blast.

The In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country ep is very well suited to the situation too.

Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert

That's what I listen to when I want to get my wank on.

Another recommendation for Shpongle, and on a similar note Ott, whose music is a little more mellow and less sinister:

Nice, thanks. That's the second recommendation for a track off that album I've had this evening.

MidnightShambler

Just play whatever you feel like at the time, don't have any structure to it, it's better that way. Acids good like that, it sort of tells you what it wants.

Although if you ever do any DMT, there's a range of frequencies and vibrations that enhance it. The best music I've found for it is, surprisingly literally, under 'DMT music' on YouTube.

MidnightShambler

And anyway don't sit in the house, go out and have a walk around. Go to a beach if there's one near, much better.

Johnny Yesno

You don't need to physically go anywhere when you've got music to take you through the mysterious vistas in your mind.

Cuntbeaks

Being out in nature AND having music, Minirigs recommended, can be quite something.

he

yes to: Kind of Blue

no to: Animals - Pink Floyd

alan nagsworth

Just listen to stuff like the cistern refilling after you flush the toilet, or a full washing machine cycle. In fact don't even do it on LSD, just go in totally sober, or at the very least after a big sunday roast where you're feeling all stodged and a bit sleepy. If you can't boot your own back doors of perception in with the simple water mechanics of your household appliances you've pretty much fucked your life up already so don't bother.

McFlymo

CD2 of Meat Beat Manifesto's Subliminal Sandwich - like BOC it is a bit "shadowy" and unsettling, but fuck me, what a ride!

Do you like this track?

Opik - Travelling Without Moving

You might also like their only album which is not so ambient, but very luscious

I'm pretty sure I saw these guys at a Megadog, sounded great on the night, like everything did. But home listening revealed, for me anyway, a lack of depth. Never got into the whole trance style scene back then, but it was great live. Particularly with thr eye popping light shows.
