Netflix Presents: The Characters

Couldn't find a CaB thread about this, so thought I'd start one. Anyone seen this?
It's from 2016 so I guess this is quite old news, but only noticed it tonight.

"It features eight up-and-coming comedians, who each write and star in their own 30 minute show. The comedians featured in the show are Lauren Lapkus, Kate Berlant, Phil Burgers, Paul W. Downs, John Early, Tim Robinson, Natasha Rothwell, and Henry Zebrowski."

I haven't heard of any of these guys, but I just watched the Lauren Lapkus episode and it was full of wonderfully crass and awkward humour. I like the concept and I liked how Lauren Lapkus had her different character's storylines cross into each other. Reminded me a bit of how Chris Lilley does this in Summer Heights High, but thought the humour and style of this had a bit more going on. No idea what the other episodes will be like though...

No takers?

Episode 1 is funny. Episode 2 is fairly uncomfortable but weirdly compelling. I had to skip episode 3 about half way through, due to Henry Zebrowski's key selling point being that he's a ginger Jack Black, but racist. Episode 4... nyyeeaaahhh... It's not great either. I don't think I'll bother with the rest, actually ... oh well.

I watched a couple but I can't remember which ones now, bar Phil Burgers (aka Doctor Brown) which I loved, but then I've a massive soft spot for the man and love pretty much everything he does.

There was definitely a thread for this a long while back.

Yeah I cant remember a single episode bar the Doc Brown one which was just mesmering in the fabulousness of what it managed to achieve, if not particularly funny. Felt like some kind of short Michel Gondry film.

Has he actually done anything else? Never heard hide nor hair of him either before or after. Link me up to anything worthwhile!

He's produced and directed Natalie Paladimes amazing show Nate, but he also did a one off for TBS called The Passage which is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBxGk8xuZoY&fbclid=IwAR1NJmGcsez5mRl4CzVswaePo7F_64tdymoAMjgIi4MvQetF0ux8XwWKcSg

Oh, and he did a few things for Channel4 a while back, just dashing off to teach a lesson for an hour but will post links after that (if I remember, my memory is fucked these days, and if I don't please feel free to pm me and remind me).

Edit: Here's his Comedy Blaps - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfONJQ7DudQ / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJkfWwl6Ptg&t=5s and here's a 25 minute one off he did for C4 - https://vimeo.com/54319033

There might be more of his work out there, and I hope there is, but if so I'm not currently aware of it.

Just started it after a mention in the I Think You Should Leave thread, not loving the first episode but I'll probably at least start all of them, given they're all quite different by the sounds of it.

Is this just stand-up routines? The title seems misleading.

No, it's sketch/character comedy. Though there is a semi-similar Netflix series featuring standups, with a decidedly non-misleading name...

I've watched 5 full ones of these now (switched the Henry Zebrowski one off after 10 minutes, it was bloody awful), just started the Tim Robinson one (which I'm already well disposed towards as I enjoyed I Think You Should Leave). Think the Paul Downs one is probably my favourite so far, Kate Berlant one a close second, the other 3 had a few OK moments but were pretty forgettable otherwise.

Finished the last 2, that's more like it! Tim Robinson's one was standard sketch show stuff but I thought it was good, pleasing nonsense, but the last Dr. Brown/Phil Burgers one was enthralling, as someone else said more a slightly surreal short film than all-out comedy but brilliant to watch. Reminded me of Russian Doll a bit, but maybe it was just the New Yorkiness of it.
