Walking Out Of Your Job After 11 Years

Started by Delete Delete Delete, May 09, 2019, 04:06:04 PM

Previous topic - Next topic
I've just walked out of my job working for a Super Market chain as a Deputy Manager after mroe than 11 years. I havn't been happy in the job since 2012 and in that time have been bounced around from store to store. I've worked in 14 stores, sometimes moved at short notice against my wishes. Being a middle Manger is a lonely postion, having to be the go-between the rank and file staff and the Manager, means you can't really make friends with people you work with. The screws get tightened as it becomes Task after Task. The working hours are anti social, after Christmas I did 3 months of continous night shifts (plues 2 days off a week) which are from 2pm to 11pm and two of those nights were weekend days. I've found that I've become a work Donkey for other people ,because I'm single apprently I can fill all the shifts nobody else wants to do. I feels like everything has been on hold, I havn't had a girldfriend in 11 years and I don't have any friends out side of CAB. When I'm off work I'm too tired to do anything.

This Bank Holiday weekend was complete torture, the tasks near impossible, a shift made up with new starerts who didn't know what they were doing, whilst my Maanger had booked the weekend off to go abroad with his girl friend. Today I went into work early today to talk to my Manager about it, but I could tell he was prepared to pin all the blame on me and that was it, I handed him my keys and told him to fuck himself and walked out. I have no idea if I did the right thing, but I was unahppy and become a very spiteful resentful person, which is the polar oppiste to how I am outside of work. The Question is what do I do now?

Twed

Wait one day before you do anything. Be clear-headed. Today is your day of not giving a fuck, but you should be on top of things tomorrow.

I'm planning on calling my Area Manager tommrow.

bgmnts

I haven't had a girlfriend in 26 years and I don't even friends in CaB, let alone outside. So no sympathy here mate.

Seriously though good luck. Next few days just chill at home, wank to gross porn and eat pot noodles or rice crispies on the sofa at 1am watching 60s Batman. You've earnt it.

Then go down to the job centre to sign on.

Yeah this is solid advice. Take a day. You've managed people for 11 years, depending on where you live you'll find a job without too many issues.

Explain your issues with someone with power. If they like you, they might do you a favour and get you something new. If they aren't able to, then it doesn't matter but you get to clear your conscience.

Resigning is not always a bad thing to do. I've known people to be promoted or moved to easy departments rather than let them walk out the door after they've formally resigned.

Lisa Jesusandmarychain

You did the right thing. Now's the time to go a- searching for a job more suited to your intelligence and abilities that you will actually enjoy doing. If I'm being honest , the statement " I don't have any friends outside of CAB " is a little unsettling, and you might want to do something about that mainly cos everyone on here is a right bunch of cunts, some of them don't even find Jodie Comer attractive. Good luck, and take care.

Noonling

Christ thats a long time to work for a supermarket chain, no matter the position.

Chill for at least a couple of days. Now that you've resigned the whole world has opened up to you. Every job I've ever had I've resigned from before getting a new job and its great.

Well done Delete. Lack of cooperative effort on your work colleagues' part.

Pranet

I've had similar problems re anti social hours (things are better at the moment) and you are right it totally fucks the rest of your life. I don't have any advice but best wishes.

Twit 2

Takes courage to do that, well done. Most people just carry on suffering and piss their life away. I'm planning to exit my job in the next year or so, minus the fuck-you, as my boss is lovely.

Well done fella. You've got good experience at 'sticking with it' which will be in your favour when you do come to apply for whatever comes next. Organisations are inherently selfish and destructive and stretch people to breaking point unless you say no at some point. You never know, they might come back and say here Del, we fucked it, how about telling us what we can do for you. All the best with whatever happens next.

Goldentony

long fuckin' foyer to be talking eleven years before you got to the fire exit

Flouncer

Great stuff Del - sounds like you're taking control after years of following the path of least resistance... That must have been a pretty soul-destroying job and there has to be something better out there for you. Life's too short for that sort of bollocks. It may not mean that much coming from a bunch of saddos like us but you are a likeable bloke. You owe it to yourself to be more social and meet new people. Best of luck man.

QDRPHNC

I was about to resign in a fit of rage tomorrow morning, but an employment lawyer told me not to.

Still though, it's tempting. Good power move.

shiftwork2

Tremendous feeling walking out of a job that you've grown to hate, I've done it twice.  Well done Del.  It may take a while for the future to become clear but you'll almost certainly look back on this in a year's time and rejoice that you did it.  Oh and more CaB telly please.

Unfortunately you can't sign on if you quit your job, at least for a certain amount of time.

I definitely think you did the right thing though, sounds like they were massively taking advantage of you and it wasn't likely to change. Hopefully you'll be able to get work with a different chain, and be in a position where they treat you better. Obviously don't say you quit though, just make up some excuse about needing time off to look after a sick relative or something, and I really hope whatever happens things work out for you.

Pijlstaart

The manager at my local supermarket always wears a flannel shirt and he wobbles about. Another one of the staff wears a flat cap and does drugs, and another one has blue hair and does drugs. They live a strange and I assume strained existence. The flat cap one doesn't stack baskets properly, he flips them through the air, makes them do a 360 before they land in the stack, which they rarely do. He goes "pyoo" when he does it.

I'd get a job in a better shop, like claire's accessories, so you can discover the new you. Belly jewel, penis cupola, windowed-arse jorts, you'll be a changed man, moving from pre-teen girl to pre-teen girl, trilling and slapping and squeezing in unhinged gok wan-esque glory.

Crabwalk

Well done delete, sounds like you did the right thing. You should feel proud of yourself, and use that feeling as a launchpad for better things.

garbed_attic

Best of luck, man, you're one of the good 'uns!

Mr_Simnock

I walked out of a job years ago, best thing to do if you work in a shit hole like that, just slowly ruins your life. Good on you for going through with it.

Sin Agog

I think you made the right call.  Your version of supermarket sweep sounds like no fun at all.

Sebastian Cobb

I usually walk out of mine after 8 hours.

Urinal Cake

11 years without a pay raise or promotion sounds hellish. Seems like they were just using you.

This monring I was woken up by a Phone call from my Manager asking If I was coming into work today. He was short and abrasive which confirmed to me I was making the right descision. After this conversation I rang up my Area Manager to confirm I had left and he was a lot more resonable, he had done my interview way back when he was a manager and knew my journey and that I hadn't been happy for a while. He understood my postiion and said wether I worked my notice or left with immediate effect wouldn't effect anything in regards to leaving. I wouldnt have given my manager as a refrence anyway as I always felt that My Manager had very little control over my career anyway and wouldn't know my full journey. Apart from leaving in 11 and half years my only absenses were half a morning sick and some shifts I used holiday for when I was in a Car Crash and didn't have a vechicle to get to work, but I feel I can finally let all the baggage and resentment go now.

Which supermarket? Blue, Brown, Orange or Green? Or German? This just might be the excuse I've needed to get into shoplifting.

Don't even joke about shop lifting, the nightmarish toll it takes on the staff that work there.

I'm not going to discount the uncertainty of looking for a new employer or the way your manager/employer treated you to cause you so much bad feeling -but there is more to life than work. Fair play to you for telling them to stick it!
