I wonder if they'll have the balls to do the child gangbang, in a flashback or something.

One thing which I did love about It: Chapter 1 was the opening scene with Georgie.  When I saw that at the cinema, I thought to myself 'oohhh, I'm in for a treat here' but sadly nothing that followed impressed me (with the possible exception of Henry Bowers).  Quite the opposite in fact but yeah, great opening.
I agree with you, this was the best bit in the film. Really scary. Just watching that clip I can feel my heart speeding up. The kid playing Georgie is really good. I thought the rest of it was alright but this scene, terrific.

beanheadmcginty

They definitely should have got Amy Adams to play the adult version of the ginger girl, considering she looks exactly like Amy Adams.

interested to find out what Elvira's surname is to be fair, like finding out Mr Blobby's first name is Julio

magval

She set that up very nicely.

This is the first time I've genuinely ever heard anybody say the Tim Curry version was shit, it absolutely fucking terrified people when it was released and I always thought it was a generally accepted thing that it was good (obviously apart from the big spider at the end, most people think that bit is shit). I've probably heard more people say the Wizard of Oz is shit than It, I'm genuinely taken aback by hearing this!

Also, when it was released it just came out on video in the Uk as 3 hour movie, I think it works better as a continuous piece than imagining it as two halves.

As I said earlier, the second half of the miniseries with the adults is pretty bad (not just the giant spider), though it has its moments, I suppose.  However, the first half with the kids is great and it saddens me that so many people shit all over it (pun very much intended).

As I said earlier, the second half of the miniseries with the adults is pretty bad at an objective level (not just the giant spider), though it has its moments, I suppose.  However, the first half with the kids is great and it saddens me that so many people shit all over it (pun very much intended).

As I say though, I don't think I've ever heard anybody shit on it at all, ever. Admittedly I can imagine there's Internet forums where people say it's fucking terrible but you'll get that with everything that's ever been made so I don't take any real notice of that. I'm honestly struggling to recall anybody in real life ever passing the opinion that it isn't very good.

What do you think makes it bad, objectively, out of interest?

the saga continues

What the fuck is going on?!  Why is Elvira involved?!

The one admirable thing about the first one was that they marketed it like hell.  VR things, experiential pop-up attractions, sneaky teasers etc.  Did they fire that lot and bring in someone who used to run the social media for Taco Bell?

It's pretty much always been through reading Internet posts on movie forums, admittedly but I see no reason to discount somebody's opinion simply because of the method by which it is conveyed.  Online trolls aren't nearly as common as people make them out to be.  I would use real-life examples as a barometer but not a lot of my friends are into film and TV like I am.

Off the top of my head (spider scene aside); Pennywise laughing in the library (it's hilarious and Tim Curry is great in that scene but it's not supposed to be funny, it's supposed to be scary - it's completely and utterly tone deaf); the bad acting in general from the adult cast (seriously, some of it is absolutely awful - "why is it so mean?!", which is especially jarring coming off the back of the superb and naturalistic performances of the child actors in part 1).  The script is also noticeably weaker than part 1, which again is only compounded by the weaker performances.  There are more individual moments, I'm sure but I haven't watched it for a few years, so my memory is hazy.

Tb honest I haven't seen it for twenty years and the reasons it's filed away in the "film is shit DO NOT WATCH" bin in my brain is down to loving the book so much, hating the bland adult actors and having the whole concept of "It" (an interdimensional shape shifting child-murdering cosmic sod bastard) reduced to shit puppet spider. Tim Curry is great as I said. I dunno, it's just not very good. It isn't as good as Carrie, The Shining, Christine, Misery, Pet Sematary or The Night Flier.
This is just my opinion, please don't bold my name again I can't face the shame

In my experience there tends to be a lot of the hive mind on specialised forums and more than enough outright contrarianism for me to be skeptical about lots of opinions. It almost seems to be a competition to find new ways to pull something apart that other people hadn't thought of yet and before you know it The Wizard Of Oz is a cunt, the munchkins were a metephor for Spanish Flu and The Tin Man was a communist.

That's not to say there aren't perfectly valid opinions, of course there are, but an awful lot are delivered by people who analyse things to the degree that they don't enjoy anything anymore (I'm not referring to you or anybody on here by the way St Eddie, you're absolutely sound).

As regards the Adult part, I'll have to rewatch it and see, I haven't seen it for years. I don't remember the acting being terrible but such was Tim Curry's performance I might have just been overwhelmed by that and rated the whole lot good. Seriously though, they should have released that theatrically in the States, man deserved an oscar. Did he even win an Emmy or anything?

Unfortunately not, It won an Emmy for music, but Curry wasn't even nominated

Such was the injustice, that Curry suffered from a major stroke.  That Emmy bunch have a lot to answer for.

Since they wouldn't do Patrick Hockstetter's fate as it goes in the book, so don't get your pervy hopes up

Bazooka

Let's not over think it (IT) but IT part 1 is shIT, part two of IT has big name stars so will be especially shIT, because they will completely beautify the PTSD element of the childhood element.

Glebe

I read a few hundred pages of the book and got sidetracked. Must try harder! I also got the Blu-ray of the TV adaptation in a sale, but I haven't watch it yet.

kalowski

If it's half as good as the book it'll be utterly, utterly, utterly, utterly, utterly, utterly shit.

BritishHobo

I really liked the first one - naturally it had to lose massive chunks of the book, and it was very jump-scarey, but I think they really did a good job with the kids. I almost preferred the childhood summer stuff (and to be honest, do wish they'd gotten to do more stuff from the book as a result), it was good fun, and quite sweet. Not sure how I'll feel about this one without that aspect. Even in the book I found myself really desperate during the 'present day' parts to get back to the childhood part of the story. The format of the book frustrated me, but at least there you get quite large sections with the kids right up to the end, whereas this probably won't have much of them.

Despite how this sounds though, I am keeping an open mind. Thought the first part was a good fun ride, and I do really really want this to stick the landing.

St_Eddie

Not sure that I want an adaptation of Stephen King's It to be fun.  Fun is often a code word for 'it was objectively bad but subjectively, I enjoyed it'.

(this post is going to go down like a ton of bricks.  "Objective" is a dirty, dirty word, or so I've learned.  I refuse to yield.  It is perfectly possible to be objectively critical of art.)

The book is fucking stupid, I like it but it's a fucking stupid mess that needs halving and ultimately is about an evil light that pretends to be a clown so it can eat kids in between Billy Joel lyrics written by a man who did so much cocaine he ended up also giving the world the film Maximum Overdrive

Gotta defend that corporation.  The corporation is good.  The company is altruistic.  The company means no harm and only has our best interests at heart.  The company tells us what to think.  All praise our corporate overlords.  On that note...

Fuck you, Disney.

Stephen King would be the first to admit that he took drugs and that by doing so, it affected his writing.  Indeed, coked up King gave us Maximum Overdrive.  I'd like to say that he's improved, post drugs, but his ongoing appreciation toward The Shining miniseries and his distaste for Kubrick's adaptation would suggest otherwise.

bgmnts

On the other hand, King's cocaine habit gave the world Maximum Overdrive, so no complaints from me.

King is ace, It is ace.
