Comedy Characters Who Released Music
« on: May 12, 2019, 10:45:37 PM »
I’m wondering whether there’s enough of this for a playlist.
I’m looking for stuff like Rene from Allo Allo doing je T’Aime:
https://youtu.be/7eX803aKL-o
And the B side:
https://youtu.be/JHkrywRWq3A

Of course there’s Arfur And Terry doing the Christmas song.

This whole album seems to be in character as Mr Humphries:

What else is there?

Still find it hard to square in my head that Gregg Turkington's a member of Caroliner.  I have an actual record of theirs with a tampon daubed in acrylic paint attached to the cover (as well as assorted twigs and shit).  That could be Gregg's paint-tampon.

Count Arthur Strong released Something Stupid as a single with Lovely Day on the B-Side.

There's also The Young Ones doing Living Doll.

An entire album from these Two Ronnies characters.  Nobody needed this.

Zip Code Rapists were pretty great too. there's a podcast somewhere (soundcloud I believe) where he talks about his 'hardcore punk' youth, it's rather interesting.

I know you're looking for people who sidestepped from TV to music, but Anna Russell's thing was playing the most grandiose, r-rolling of opera dames 'whose voice could break glass' to genuinely hilarious effect: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aYCXO_FZj5k

Yeah, Gregg's musical career is fascinating. This podcast where he's giving a rare out-of-character interview covers it extensively. I personally fucking love Faxed Head and I have the live DVD which is highly entertaining.

The Fresh Prince's Parents Just Don't Understand seemed more like it was from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air than an actual Fresh Prince/Will Smith song.

alan nagsworthKenny Everett proving once and for all that Sid Snot and Gizzard Puke were actually two separate characters.

The first line is inevitably pretty much 'Hello, Sid Snot here.'

Ali G had that collab in the early ‘00s with Shaggy. That count?

I bet Ricky “Gervais” Brent was egotistical enough to have released some music “in character” (so you can’t criticize it for being shit, yeah, because it’s a satire, yeah?) but fuck actually looking that up.

  Cosmo Smallpiece's cover of I Can't Control Myself: http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/DP/2007/12/355_23_Les_Dawson_-_I_Cant_Control_Myself.mp3

Unless I'm misjudging the current climate, I think this is crying out for a re-release.

Arfur Mullard and Hylda Baker on TOTP doing 'Youre the one that I want'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8kRNMyvkAw

Bafflingly they also recorded a follow up in the shape of 'Don't go breaking my Heart'.

I don't think the latter made it onto TOTP as the booker for the the original appearance was shot at dawn.

Clive Dunn is in character here as either Corporal Jones or Charlie Quick; not that one can make much distinction between the two

Simone. This is like a great lost Ogden's Nut Gone Flake track.

And there is always Jasper Carrot also on TOTP.

Though as any fule know we only bought it for the other side of the single, 'The Magic Roundabout' at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
