The Goons

Various Peter Sellers characters

Racist 'comedy' characters - from minstrel songs in the early 1900s to Jim Davidson's 'White Christmas'

Metal Mickey had a couple of singles out. This is like Telex meets Daft Punk.
Stick right to end and you'll be rewarded with the most ill thought out punchline uttered on a kid's TV show ever.

At last this gives me a chance to air my Metal Mickey anecdote....

My first wife went to school with Colin Bostock-Smith's son (Adam) and she was invited to round for tea at the Bostock-Smith's place. She was promised a surprise which duly arrived in the shape of a life size talking robot, for twas Metal Mickey himself. Apparently Bostock-Smith senior wrote all the metal marvel's episodes and had been loaned the robot in advance to give him inspiration for scripts. It seems to have scared the life out of her because she has had an aversion to life size talking robots ever since.

As a teenager, I spent £25 buying a rare VHS of the music video.  It was awful.

I actually own this.  At least I received it as a gift rather than paying for it though.

Neil Hamburger's new album is very much in character to the degree that's it's not strictly a comedy album since it is Hamburger not performing as a comedian, but as a lounge singer, and not doing so badly, just errantly/ idiosyncratically:

That is a genuinely creepy single

Though it has nothing on the B-side

Jesus, there's more!

I remember hearing this one
Bloody hell! I notice on the back of the 7" there's an address for the Marvin Deprecation Society. I wonder what you got if you wrote to them?

EDIT: apparently, details of why you shouldn't join, but if you persisted, you could buy a poster. http://members.tripod.com/martin_leese/Marvin/marvin_fanclub.html

Still find it hard to square in my head that Gregg Turkington's a member of Caroliner.  I have an actual record of theirs with a tampon daubed in acrylic paint attached to the cover (as well as assorted twigs and shit).  That could be Gregg's paint-tampon.

I've been meaning to start a thread about SF weird bands in the 1980s and 90s featuring Greg Turkington, Caroliner and their family ness, including branches out to TFUL282, World Of Pooh, Archipelago Brewing Company, Three Doctors Band, Fat Worm Of Error, Zip Code Rapists, Job's Daughters and tons of other bands I really like. Way too drunk to do it now though, but soon. I will.

Also I don't think Greg was with Caroliner for any of their records, although he did record with Grux as Hello Kitty On Ice and Bean Church. I think. Obviously, I am not a doctor.

Top tale! Mick Dolenz of The Monkees used to produce that show.

love this album cover (and the music's pretty good too!)

It's a great record. Unfortunately I only have the reissue which has this comedy piece of shit as its cover

Arfur Mullard and Hylda Baker on TOTP doing 'Youre the one that I want'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8kRNMyvkAw
The B-side of which was their rendition of Save Your Kisses For Me. There was also an official music video made for the A-side, aping the scene from Grease
Quote
Bafflingly they also recorded a follow up in the shape of 'Don't go breaking my Heart'.

I don't think the latter made it onto TOTP as the booker for the the original appearance was shot at dawn.
The Grease and Elton cover singles were from their 1978 album of covers Band On The Trot

which also included verisons of Ma Baker and Daddy Cool

Prior to this, Mullard had also released an album of comedy sketches and covers in 1967 called Arthur Mullard Of London, which included a cover of Yesterday, and while starring in in the sitcoms Romany Jones and Yus My Dear he released further singles (including the theme tune to Yus My Dear). Although not released as a record, I have a vague memory of Victor Lewis-Smith having him sing a Smiths song on one of his programmes.

Unfortunately after his death in 1995 it was revealed by his children that he had subjected his wife to years of physical and mental abuse (resulting in her death from a sleeping tablet overdose in 1961) and sexually abused his daughter from the age of 13.

Not Bernard Manning doing the Smiths?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5cS0bZiJ1Q
That's the feller, I'm getting two things conflated - VLS did use Arthur Mullard as a comedy vehicle, but the Smiths thing was Bernard Manning (on The Word, I think?)

LORD BAD VIBE

Jim Moir/Vic Reeves, of course.

And "Professor" Stanley Unwin on Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.

I'll probably get this wrong, but VLS was a producer on Midweek and had the bright idea, when Libby Peeves was on holiday, of having Arthur Mullard stand in as guest presenter. It has to be heard to be believed. Not sure if it's on the youtubes.

My big sister bought me the single of You're the One that I Want by Mullard and Baker, but later smashed it for some reason.

I didn't know he'd turned out to be a wrong-un, but I'm not surprised.

Petey Pate

All of On Cinema Tim Heidecker's music ('Our Values are Under Attack', 'Empty Bottle', 'MT BTL 2.0') which are all on Soundcloud - if that counts as being 'released'.

There's also Doc Shades' 'Sex Rash' from Eagleheart.

(*Alexei Sayle)

If Alexei Sayle counts then there's also "Didn't You Kill My Brother" and "'Ullo John Got a New Motor" and the various other ones he had in his TV shows. But he's a comedian releasing songs rather than a comedy character really.
