"Oh shit, new page!"

Neil

Why are there so many people complaining when they make a post and find that it ends up on a new page of the thread?  What does it matter?

Neil

Actually, I'll move this into GD for more responses because I find it mystifying.

TraceyQ

I think it's because it breaks up the flow of conversation.

Edit: Christ, Neil, how long is the "You cannot make another post so soon after your last" set for?

no_offenc

That's it.  It's a bit like "bugger, everyone's going to see this" as well, like a towel falling off as you walk past a window.

terminallyrelaxed

Isnt it something weird like 40 seconds?

Bugger. I was going to wait for a new page before replying.

DuncanC

I usually get a bit of a jolt thinking I accidentally posted a new thread instead of posting in an old one. Apart from that, I have no idea.

Beagle 2

I don't get it, people go back to edit their post to say "oops new page" because they were responding to something on the one before, but while they're there they may as well quote what's being responded to if they think nobody's going to get it. But let's face it, surely if you see something like that at the top of a page you just scroll back, not think "What on EARTH?".

And, why so many "Apologies, I'm sloshed as I post this."-type excuses on the boards? Is that a good excuse? Are you all drunks, eh? Eh?

terminallyrelaxed

I thought it was traditional, like saying 'LOL NO' when you're being knowingly crap.

Frinky

I did it today becuase I did a pointless throwaway remark that looks stupid when it's at the top of a new page.

It's like being the class clown, it's funny when you're hiding at the back where no-one really can see you, when you're hoisted out to the front, it ceases to be funny.

slim

Usually it annoys me because:
[*]You make a post without quoting and have to edit to change the context.[*]When you've made a flippant comment, probably not worthy of a post but you did it anyway, then the fucker's at the top of a new page, exposing to all just how unfunny you are.[/list]I think now it has just become a bit of a joke. A pretty tired one, but we all like these little in-jokes - it makes us feel loved.

We need a special emoticon for it, like this from the Something Awful forums:

    Frinky

Thankfully, using that emoticon will get you banned there.

    TraceyQ

From what I've heard, breathing in and out will get you banned there.

    DuncanC

You can breathe anything in fyad

    Frinky

Nah, that's bollocks. It's a really good forum and they've put up with me for long enough, and no bans for me so far.

That's why I think Neil should charge for us to use this place, it would weed out the crappier posters.

    slim

I know you quite probably didn't mean it like that, but that sounded suspiciously like poor people do not make good posters.

    Frinky

Not at all. It's only about £6 to spare for a one-off memebership.

The kind of people who would pay £6 to join a forum like this (as opposed to, say, buy a magazine or two costing as much) obviously value the conversation/depth of topics. If they're willing to pay, they're willing to contribute, or at the very least, not do hit and run posts like you're seeing loads of in the Barley threads.

It's essentially saying "Do you really want to join?" rather than letting someone join for a lark and then fuck about.

And then it helps pay server costs.

    hymen spaz

This is all starting to sound a little like a forum for "local people only".

If you started charging the amount of people who join would be a lot less hence no one really coming to CAB then everone dying and the world ending.

    Sorry i'm just really drunk

    blue jammer

If you reply and yours is the last reply on page 1, I think it's crap as your post can get overlooked with people replying to post #13 or #23 depending on what you've got the number of posts per page bit set at.

Or #14 or #24 depending on forum software etc etc

    Identity Crisis Ahoy!

Hah! I was banned from S.A's forum for doing a 'Shit! New Page!" in a thread like this; asking why people do it. They said they'd ban anyone who did it. I couldn't resist.

I did buy a new username, but I never read the forums there anymore.

    SA has 50,000 + members.

Edit: and what if it was only £2? People could read the board, see it was worth joining up for and contributing to. We get money for a decent server, and the fuckwits who troll here or make worthless "Comedy Nazis" comments wouldn't bother, and if they did, they'd get banned, and that'd be an easy £2 to the pile.

It's all rhetoric, as Neil won't do it, and fair enough, but the idea wasn't to create anything cliquey. It's just that the intenet is about 95% fuckwits, and it's nice to protect yourself from that.

has it........ ok but then i don't think that i would pay to use a forum. well not one that i didn't already know...... the chance that is a pile of shite would put me off.

not being tight but there tends to be enough stuff on the internet for free that it always feels a bit strange to pay for things.

    Identity Crisis Ahoy!

There's vast differences between SA and CaB. SA offer lots of porn, mp3s and TV show downloads and a lot more forums than CaB has.

For what it's worth, I much prefer CaB.

    Frinky

SA has closed all those forums (the porn and MP3s), too, and since then, the quality of poster has gotten better. It's all discussion.

I'm not being argumentative for the fun of it, or anything, it's clearly a system that works, and it would certianly benifit us in that we'd get a nice healthy server and downloads.

    slim

I dunno. I see what you're saying - you have to really want to be here if you're going to pay for it, but I suspect there are people who would make good posters who couldn't afford to splash out £6 or even £2 on a forum. Some people live hand to mouth and access the internet in libraries, for example.

The aim is good - to remove trolls - but I don't think the execution is fair.

    Mister Six

I find it's far more annoying when a post I make gets left at the bottom of the preceding page, especially when it's a biggie, as it means everyone skims right over it.

    Not that they didn't anyway.

    Rats

Having a post right at the bottom of the page is worse because people always just go to the last page of the thread and it never gets read. Haha, that's assuming that people don't ignore my posts anyway.

A round of applause for Bjmer I think ladies and gentlemen for posting in a thread about people saying "oops new page" - winding up at the top of a new page with his post and not resorting to the obvious joke everyone else here knows in their heart of hearts they would have gone for.
