No. 1s Where The B-Side Was Better

Started by Satchmo Distel, June 01, 2019, 11:02:36 PM

Previous topic - Next topic
Inspired by the Poppermost thread. Most obvious examples:

Beatles: Rain is better than Paperback Writer

Wings: Girls School is better than Mull of Kintyre

Buddy Holly: Raining In My Heart is better than It Doesn't Matter Anymore

lipsink

Acquiesce and Talk Tonight are probably better than Some Might Say.

Stay Young is way better than D'You Know What I Mean?

Prologue To History is probably better than If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next.

It's good but no way is it better than Ghost Town.

Barmy talk.

Grown Up Girls by Eurythmics, much better than it's A side There Must Be An Angel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV-ZA3DIlPo

Kane Jones

Feeding The Fire > Land Of Confusion

daf

Mansun - Black Infinite Space
(A-side - Fool)

One of my favourite Mansun tracks - hidden away as the 3rd track on the second CD* of their last single.

- - - -

Oasis - I Got The Fever
(A-side - Stand By Me)

Garbage "loud" production & the verse is very 'Oasis by numbers', but that chorus is the best thing they ever did!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
* (those were the days! You could make up a whole second album of songs from all the b-sides they stuck out!)

DrGreggles

Not sure all of these were number ones.

Ah cobblers - sorry - I missed that bit.

The b-side to 'Eye Level' by the Simon Park Orchestra was this:

Never really liked 'Three Times a Lady' by the Commodores, but the b-side is a banger:

Magic Moments by Perry Como was the b-side to Catch a Falling Star. Can you believe that shit? Someone should have got fired for that!

Oh my gosh! I'm a huge Crown Court fan and I never knew that.

DrGreggles

'Lady in Red'.

I mean, I've no idea what the b-side was, but surely it can't be worse.

DrGreggles

Not clicking on that.
It'll ruin my YouTube algorithm forever!

Mm, big fan of Tolerate but Prologue is one of their best songs.

Let's All Make Believe is the best SOTSOG-era track, a thus a lot better than Go Let it Out. Mind you, (As Long as They've Got) Cigarettes in Hell is also better than Go Let it Out. Can't be too many songs overshadowed by both of their b-sides.

Moskow Discow is clearly telescopic head and shoulders above the Telex, Rock Around The Clock cover

Practically invents trance in 1979.

Adam & the Ants' B-sides were always old pre-Marco tracks rerecorded with the Marco lineup.  Much better than the A-sides and he still plays them live:

Stand & Deliver b/w Beat My Guest

Prince Charming b/w Christian D'or

Goody Two Shoes b/w Red Scab

I've heard that Moskow Diskow was meant to be the A-side (and was in other countries), but someone somewhere decided that the B-side would get more attention from radio in the UK. Can Buzby confirm / deny?

That would make sense.

As Al Needham says on the Chart Music podcast, "The record buying British public are such a load of cunts"

And so is this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk7BakSsxGQ

One of four songs I can think of that mention Garry Bushell. Can you name the other three?

There is no prize.

The Fall, C N C - Stop Mithering would be one.

Did Squeeze ever record a song called Pulling Bushells from the Shell?
