So, they're back for.. what, the 3rd new album since they reformed? New single from the upcoming LP out today:

Eh... it's not absolutely shit, I guess. Sounds more immediately Pixies-esque than a lot of their post-reformation work. The verses approximate the band pretty well then the chorus sort of falls a bit flat. Out of all the acts I grew up with who've reformed they've always been one of the trickier propositions. So of their time, so influential - occupying such a unique spot in teenage hearts. It was a treat to hear the old hits for a good few years but this new stuff just hasn't had any consistent spark or life to, even leaving aside the Kim Deal situation.

It's not bad, sounds a bit early-Pixiesish (with a tiny bit of a Sonic Youth vibe?). Indie Cindy was pretty good, and I have Head Carrier on CD, but I never really got round to listening to it, the singles were decent though. I kind of lost interest after Kim did a bunk, although to be fair Paz has settled in nicely (after Kim Shattuck's awkward stint).

Yeah, it's a gothier 'Sugar Cane' to my ears.

Calistan

I think it's a decent song albeit with a weak chorus.

Cafish Kate has the potential to be one of my favourite ever songs, very catchy. As far as the previous two albums go I think Plaster of Paris tops everything: short, sweet and fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vI9ivJ276Xg

I'd forgotten about that one, it does have a lovely chorus.

Catfish Kate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzMff4KMf88

A nice melding of Holiday Song and Custom All The Way (both of which would feature in my top 20 songs Charles Thompson has ever written). Production still sounds a bit iffy though.

All new Pixies songs are pleasant tunes... completely lacking any of the energy or magic of the band's original run.

I find new Pixies releases depressing. Never bad, but just completely unnecessary and lifeless. New Super Mario Bros. U when I want SMB3.

The band needs Kim. Bam Thwok wasn't perfect but it was the last thing Pixies did that felt right.

Calistan

I agree that a lot of the new Pixies songs lack energy but Kim was the death knell of the band. Her antics just sounded pure poisonous.

Twed

I don't know about any of that, but I'm a listener and not their therapist. Maybe that poison is why the songs were good.

what is point

they sound like every other dull indie band now

What were her antics?
